I don't know if he was a gangbanger himself, but he was killed because he was slated to testify against some gangbanger, so he was "silenced", and they killed his girlfriend too. Shot the car all to shit, IIRC. So that says right there that if he wasn't a banger, at least he was associated with them.

That was my understanding also. It all came about when there was a shooting at a rap concert that her son organized.
