Which is faster with the BATFE, a plain old paperwork submission or a trust? EL Paso Count means that sign-off isn't an issue, but I'd like to get "in" before the regs change...

Also, if I don't have in-state family or trustworthy friends, is a trust even a possibility?

No difference in time.

A trust has nothing to do with friends family in state.

J is correct. No difference in processing time with the ATF if you can get your chief LEO to sign off. You'll also need a picture and fingerprints unless you use a Trust.

As for in-state friends and family... not needed. The Trust will pass your items on to whoever you'd like--so long as they're not "prohibited people" as defined by Federal regs.

If you die without a Will or Trust as a Colorado resident, the default order of distribution for your assets is: wife, kids, grandkids, parents, siblings, etc. If you truly do not have ANY living relatives, the State will get your assets. If this were to happen, you can bet all your firearms would end up being melted down and "repurposed" as paperclips. Bureaucrats can never have enough paperclips!

The biggest concern for NFA stuff is that the person dividing up your assets will just hand over the regulated items without proper authorization from the ATF. This isn't to say someone couldn't screw up and not follow the terms of your NFA Trust, it's just that having an NFA Trust draws attention to the fact that those items require special consideration.

The trust route does not require fingerprints, so the examiner wouldn't be waiting on the FBI to finish those if you go the trust route. Plus I've heard of people having issues with their fingerprint cards. Then again by using a trust, you stand the chance of the examiner not liking some of the wording on it. Really it's hit and miss.

I'm fairly new to the NFA game but I'd almost wager that the trust route has a chance of taking slightly less time than individual.

6 months avarage time from receipt of application. Don't start getting excited because they cashed your check, OR come down with a case of islandermyk. When you're approved, you're approved. Calling every 3-4 weeks doesn't speed things up, or magically get you ahead of anyone else. Unless you have the NFA item in stock at one of the many dealers in the state, allow another 3-5 weeks for a Form 3 transfer. For an item that was ordered but not in stock, Happy new year. Mfg have their own time frame for production, delivery etc. ADD another 1-6 months for an item not in their inventory. The entire process depending one in stock, ordered, transferred etc can take to a year, worse case scenario.

Get a trust.

My local CLEO will readily sign off so I went that route. In hindsight, I should have gone with a trust.

The younger you are, the better the argument is for a trust. If you're young, your life will change. Spouse, children, etc. are all a possibility and having to transfer NFA items from you to your trust at $200 a pop is a waste of money. Been there, done that

I had a problem with Douglas county not willing to sign off on a Class III weapon I purchased. I found a very nice lady in Grand Junction that set up my trust. That was the easy part. After that it took 8 months for my paperwork to clear. I finally got my item.
