there are lots of federal employees here. that is a problem, shrink the federal government and we wont need to give them more power.

Yeah, that is true. The article was specifically about the Secret Service. There is another bill running through the legislature right now to give the DoD cops at Fort Carson state police powers as well. In the statute, other federal Agents have been given state police powers already. It really is a non-issue, but I would be hard pressed to convince you of that.

I would wholeheartedly agree there is too many federal employees and too many federal law enforcement under each of the IG offices of EVERY federal agency. They need to consolidate and shrink or require the FBI to take over their investigative duties without an increase in manpower and do away with the IG offices. I agree completely. Is it going to happen? No.

there is no point in giving the feds more power. if this was an issue we would know about it. but, its not. its a manufactured issue by people who love to grab more power or give away their freedoms foolishly. but hey if you are ok with giving up freedom for the 1 in a million chance that it will help, by all means.
This shit happens and it happens regularly. I drove by a fucking bank robbery in progress once. I didn't do shit! I let hit happen. I had no jurisdiction to stop it, detain, arrest, or intervene. So, don't you dare tell me "if" from your theoretical castle of "don't have a fucking clue". You have never been a cop much less a Fed. Your theory is flawed and you are being told so by two different LE and you are disregarding the educated insight. Wow, next thing you know you will support non-gun-owning deomocrats writing gun laws. Theoretical knowledge is enough...

Actually, you are wrong, I guess you know everything about being a Fed right? The secret Service are federal law enforcement. http://www.secretservice.gov/whoweare.shtml Any cop with actual time coordinating with multiple Fed LE agencies would know this.

I'm always civil. I just try to interject accurate information into discussions. I'm never going to convince anyone on this forum to change their perspective or beliefs.

I guess I'm still old fashioned enough to think Law Enforcement are the good guys. I may not agree with the laws, and there are ways to change them. I might not agree with the methods, there are ways to change that as well. I've been all the way around the world, and my impression is most people just have No. Freaking. Clue. how good we have it with our police forces; Federal, State, and Local.

They said the same thing in Germany in the 1930s. Just because its the feds, that does not make it right, or good. Germany did not go socialist/nazi overnight. It happened in steps.

    From Sheriff Maketa:

I've been asked by numerous people of my position concerning SB13-013. This is a bill proposed by the Colorado Senate to recognize members of the Secret Service as Peace Officers under Colorado law. This law has very little if any impact on the Office of Sheriff. I think there are circumstances where it may be advantageous to those agents and local law enforcement. This law extends peace officer status in a very limited capacity. The bill itself clearly sets those limitations. Some have expressed concern this could be the Federal Governments' attempt to prosecute local law enforcement who refuse to honor presidential directives and I do not believe that to be the case. Based on the language in the bill, past decisions of The US Supreme Court and Colorado Law, I just do not see this bill, if passed, granting any additional special powers or even powers that equal local law enforcement peace officers to secret service members. I have not endorsed this bill nor do I intend to endorse it because I have not been presented the specific needs to make this change, but it is not completely out of the realm of possibility to see this legislation brought before our state legislature. I hope this answers those questions and/or concerns.

Lets stay focused and vigilant against those laws that offer false promises of safety at the expense of our rights as law abiding citizens.

" I have not endorsed this bill nor do I intend to endorse it because I have not been presented the specific needs to make this change..."

Clearly Sheriff Maketa does not understand why this is even being proposed, and that seems to me to be the key here. The answer to that question may either comfort or alarm people. However, until that question is answered, I personally can't blame regular citizens from being concerned about this bill. I don't really consider that tinfoiley at all given what we have seen so far from this administration and justice dept.

Exactly. That's what Larimer county Sheriff Justin Smith basically said too.
