Best handgun safes
Looking for opinions on the best hand gun safes for home protection. This is the one I'm leaning towards right now:

I think that if you're going to be using it for home protection, it shouldn't be in a safe. Just one more mechanical barrier to get through before you're armed, in a situation where you're probably startled, still half asleep, shaky w/ adrenaline etc.Originally Posted by Kmac

These are also good for keeping a spare gun or two around the house (in addition to the normal carry gun) without just leaving them unsecured or in a "hidden" location. The biometric type take less than a second to get into and you can't enter the wrong combination.

What about these "hidden" safes? Seems like a pretty smart way to secure your firearms, yet still have easy access to them if you know where they are.

I was thinking about this one in particular, large enough for 2 rifles and plenty of room up top for magazines or a flashlight, and it is lockable:

I've had that model for years and like it. My personal belief is that those of with little kids (and their friends) need something more than just "don't touch that gun in my nightstand." YMMV. I've heard the biometric version can be problematic with fingerprints "sticking" the scanner, allowing others to open the safe, but that could be internet rumors.
I use a simple safe like the one the OP listed MAINLY so my son does not have access WHEN i am not carrying. Normally I am carrying at home, but like others have said it is a barrier when you really need quick access.
The one we have has a shelf for my wifes and my gun.
The the other handguns are in the actual safe that in the saferoom.

I keep a small lockbox in my nightstand to keep little hands off of it during the day if it's not on my person. At night, the box is open so all I have to do is open my night stand and have instant access to my M&P.
Everything else is locked up in the safe in my man room.
Yeah, I've heard some can be problematic. I think it's like anything else mechanical. They were very unreliable when first brought on to the market but have improved substantially since then. From what I can tell 9G Products makes one of the best though not the least expensive. They claim a failure rate of only 1 in 100,000.
And just to clarify...these aren't "safes". They're mostly designed to keep unauthorized people away from your gun and provide relatively quick access with a modest amount of security.

I have several of the GunVault safes and I find them very easy to use and convenient. They run on AA batteries and they recommend you change them once a year. I got 2 years out of a set of batteries on the one I use every day to store my EDC gun in. I too find them a good compromise to safety and convenience. My advice is to practice opening it in the dark - just by feel - so if you ever need it in a hurry you can open it without looking. The first one I purchased lasted 9 years with every day use before the opening mechanism quit but I can still use it with the key.
I also use the gunvault MV500 and have been very pleased. This is a great out of sight out of mind safe. Easy to access and not something you need to look at in order to operate it.
