"Just curious if this thread went in the direction you'd hoped for?"
Not exactly. Though I understand the sentiments.
It's pretty easy to understand. Gun owner's have been under attack by the left since I've been alive. A "call for civility" is liberal code for "be nice when you talk to us but we're going to say the nastiest, ugliest things we can about you even if we have to make it up".
Seeing through the progressive hogwash in the article you linked to is easy. This guy posts up about how he's a gun owner (to give legitimacy to his argument) and then proceeds to call for more gun controls and civility. An attack is an attack, some are just disguised by nice sounding words. Like "reasonable", "can't we can all agree", "common sense", etc. He's not fooling anyone. Especially most people on this site.
I'll suggest (and that's all it is, a suggestion) that if you tend to see things the way "Jesse" does, this may not be the place for you politically.

My take is, I don't care what your religion is as long as you don't push your faith into politics. Theocracy is theocracy no matter how you try to sugarcoat it. That being said, if you're willing to defend my right to be a heathen I will happily defend your right to worship to whatever deity you wish even if you disagree with my lifestyle.
With Beeho's reelection last fall, the left are really feeling their oats now. No need for them to be civil since THIS IS THEIR TIME (or so they think). If this country experiences an economic collapse in the coming years it will be a nasty battle, and as the good Reverend Wright said: "those chickens are going to come home to roost". Said otherwise, you reap what you sow.

One other thought. The last (and final) time I actually listened to one of Beeho's constant stream of speeches was after the Tucson shootings by Loughner. Remember his call for civility and "civil discourse"?
When the left accused right wingers and the tea party as being responsible, what did you hear from Beeho? Crickets. He had that and many other opportunities for civility, but has instead shown leadership for venom, demagoguery, and demonization. No wonder the atmosphere is so poisoned. When you hear libs call for civility, it is either through extreme naivite or as a ploy to silence the moderates and right. In the current environment, there can be no other rational thought than to defeat liberals and progressives at every turn. No compromise, no backing down, no "toning down the rhetoric" when they amp it up at every opportunity.
