Yep. Considering that the sides of the engine bay are open and the top is covered (or so it appears), my guess is an M35.

Good one. I was completely focused on .mil vehicles.

Okay, next challenge. The goal here is to guess what it is. Bonus points for what specifically was in it and where it was.

Maybe. It is an old missile silo but I'm not sure what they were actually armed with at that location (nuclear and conventional were options on that model of missile).

YES! Part of Marin Headlands bunker complex the gun was never used and removed but capable of firing a projectile the weight of a VW bug over 30 miles. It's just north of the Golden Gate Bridge ( first left past the bridge north bound) the picture of the "hole" is a picture of inside the bunker. GooGle Battery Construction 129

and one more clue. The picture is actually looking at the back end of the object. The front end (or a complete picture) would have given it away too fast.

Indeed it is. The "Austin Magic Pistol".

It used "magic crystals" that when wet could be triggered to explode, propelling ping pong balls or other such objects, with a flame throwing explosion :) Watch this video.
