Assuming you had the extra $200-400 sitting about, would you buy a GoPro (Hero3 model)?

Got one. Yes. Get the silver if you already have an iPhone. The $100 difference between the black and the silver is that the black has a 12 mpix camera vs the 11 on the silver and it has a wireless remote. The silver has wifi and you can get the iPhone app to control it and see what it is recording.

I have a contour, grabbed it with Amazon points. It seems really cool in concept, but then you get it and it sort of isn't. IMHO.
I was recording all these mtb rides, I did a few on the velodrome to see how the banking would look - and you come home and don't really want to watch what you just did.

SO, Daniel Defense has a mount for their Omega Rails and I thought about that too, but I don't want to watch a video of a target. It isn't like it is getting you shooting AND the target, so I passed.

A few of the rafting places (I know Echo Canyon in CC for sure) have helmets with the waterproof mount. That'll be the last chance. Beyond that, I just don't know what to do with it other than shoot dog videos and the iphone is faster / easier for that.

$0.02 / YMMV.

About 3 years ago, I saw a hunter magazine article about all the onboard camera review.
Instead of going gopro, I went with i-kam.

Good part about ikam is that it is just a sunglasses.
Bad part- crappy resolution. hard to turn on off, manipulate.

Conclusion: I would've went with gopro.

If I had more disposable income, I would get one. Along with several different mounts so I could hang it off my motorcycle, my ATV, and maybe a rifle or two.

The reason I got in to shooting stuff....with a POV camera, is I was looking back upon my 20s and didn't really have any pictures or video of the cool/fun stuff I did whether it was for work or fun. Now it's rather nice to look back on a video and go, 'oh yea, that was a blast...remember when...that was cool...blablabla'
That being said, putting together a 'video' isn't as easy as GoPro makes it out to be with their little video display booth. Shooting a gun stage isn't that big of a deal because it is what it is, but splicing action sports together takes a lot of time. For instance, I mt bike a lot and just turning on a POV camera and letting it run for a 30 minute ride will get real boring to watch. You have to splice different camera angles together and make your clips no more than 10-12 seconds long or you'll fall asleep bored watching it. It's great for shooting mt biking rides but really, the videos aren't that entertaining unless they are your local trails that you can run different angles and setups. When I went to Moab, I shot with it only on my helmet and the videos come out less entertaining.
With that, you'll need a descent computer to run the video software. I run a MacbookPro with the iMovie software that comes with it.
The reason why I figured I'd jump in here blab for 5 minutes is because a know a lot of people who have gone out and bought one only for it to sit in the closet after the initial test run.

The below videos would be a regular 30 minute ride but probably took 3 hours with starting, stopping, setting up different angles, running different lines etc etc. After that, the video production could be anywhere from 1-3 hours.

With the infamous zipline mount:

In the end, the reason why I like contour over GoPro is because of the positive on/off button and the slimmer profile. The only major benefit of the GoPro over Contour is the chestmount rig.

Good luck....

Go Pro all the way. I was a contour guy until I had to return mine 3 times for warranty work.... Of course each time just before a trip where I wanted to use it! Gopro are big, but they work great all the time.

In Ridge's video, what happens at 1:20?

Also, as a claims adjuster, I have to say that only some of those videos are the most common accidents I see; which I find weird. Lots of people blowing red lights in that video.

HAHA!!! That is greatness!
Maybe Contour + some creative mount + my boxer may be a winner after all! Thumbs up!

$200 buys 400 rounds of Greek HXP .30-06 from CMP (albeit with about 75 days processing time). Ammo >>> electronics.

I noticed a lot of those were Russia/E. Europe- shocking that they are such terrible drivers there. You should see China too. YIKES!

I want a GoPro. So I say if you have the money, Kraven, get it!

I have had an old Hero from when they first came out and now every helmet I have has a mount (ATV, Snowmobile and ski on mine, wife & kiddos) Super easy, reliable and not shakey sketchy vids. We have taken it to the rec center and used it as an underwater cam from the diving board as well. Here is a video that always makes me proud, first day of my boy riding his dirt bike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9jQcyca40c There are a ton of mounts and readily available....DO IT!!!

Yep, I do, it's an older version, but it'd be great for someone wanting to get their feet wet and mess around with then decide if they wanted to upgrade later.

I can't find my contour. Had a lot of uses for it though. Anyone test a gopro in driving rain?

I'll give you a comparison: 65MPH on a motorcycle, with a helmet mount, of that heavy, sting like a bee rain that we get here in Colorado, for about an hour or so. I got some water inside the plastic fore of the lense of the contour but it didn't seem to effect operation just had to take it apart a bit to clean it out. How does a go-pro hold up to direct, driving-ass rain?

New one: really good. used mine in downpour and under water with no problems.

Ya, a majority of that is across the pond. The russians are always posting their driving skills on liveleak...

The new contourroam solves that for you. More waterproof. If you plan on using a regular contour in wet conditions you'll need the waterproof case.

Those videos amaze me. Not only the numbers of idiot drivers, but the numbers of people who HAVE dash cameras mounted and running! How many people do you know that have one in their car, turned on at all times? And most of those appeared to be Eastern European.

Another thing, just how the hell does one person collect dozens of crash videos from dozens of other people, possibly from several countries, and compile them together into one video? I wonder that a lot, there's shitloads of compilation videos of all kinds on the net, many are obviously LE or surveillance....HTF do people get ahold of other people's videos, especially LE and surveillance stuff?

Guess I'm just too old to understand this newfangled age. But if I ever get my old Willys Jeep running, I want a GoPro to take on trail rides, for sure!

My wife insisted we have a video of our wedding and we've not watched it once in the 22 years we've been married. -that's about how often I'd watch GoPro footage.

I enjoy the car crash compilations on YouTube as much as the next person but I work with stills and simply don't think in terms of motion. A great device for some, not so much for others.

My main goal for it is to use it as a POV for training or maybe even competition, more to get to watch hand placement etc.
