Coming home from the Good guys show this Saturday the engine in the truck decided it didn't like it's life anymore so it took it's own life. Now I get the fun of replacing it.

So instead of going back to the show on Sunday I decided to start tearing into it.

I got the front clip off lastnight, now it's time to pull the motor and figure out what to stuff back into it. I've got an LS here in the garage that would be sweet in there with a turbo on it, but that means, wiring, new tranny, new crossmembers, new driveshaft, new fuel tank, new fuel system. That sounds more like a winter project. I'll probably just stuff another small block in it to get me back on the road for summer, then figure out a more permanent solution this winter.

Bummer, how did you get it home?

It popped on I-25 right next to the Berthoud motocross track. My dad was following me in his 40 Ford, we left the truck on the side of the highway, ran to a buddies grabbed his truck and trailer and drug it home.

Bad part of it was I had my kids with me, and we were already running late, I was supposed to take them home, grab my wife and take them all to the airport for a week in Florida. Luckily my sister wasn't too far away and she was able to come grab the kids and get them and the wife to DIA in time to catch their flight.

That sucks, luckly you got it all worked out. And now you have a week without the wife and kids to work on it!

Why would you have to swap the tranny?

Ouch. BTDT, no fun.

What are you going to replace it with?

That sucks, but working on a cool truck is a million times better than repairing some boring modern vehicle. The LS is cool and all, but the simplicity of a plain old small block is where it's at.

Man, I need to convince the wife we need a hot rod...

He wouldn't have to but what I'm assuming is a TH350 or TH400 in it now wouldn't do a turbo'd LS justice. I've got friends that run 3 speed automatics behind LS engines but they're less than ideal on the street/highway.

.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, a rare air conditioned oil pan, haven't seen one of these in a long time. Expensive option!

A th350 or 400 would hold up but I wouldn't boost it more than 5-7lbs till he could get a built 80 in it, we built a shop truck and ran 10lbs on it for almost a year till we did an 80 swap

You're right, I wouldn't have to do the tranny swap right away, but I have a 4l80 here and it'd be nice to get the overdrive.

Was thinking about just doing another small block, but after looking around all day online, a 6.0 LS is looking pretty good. Don't be surprised if you see some stuff pop up in the classifieds from me tonight to help with the fundage.

We're on the same page. A 350 could handle it but there are better suited options and if he's going through the work, might as well put an 80 or a T-56 behind it.

A t-56 would be ideal, but good luck finding one. I just sold one and have been kicking myself ever since.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Just think how much cooler it'd be with 3 times the horsepower, twice the MPG, twice the reliability, and air conditioning! How sweet would it be on a road trip towing an old roadster on a trailer.

Haha, I'd planned a motor upgrade, but I wanted to wait until after summer. This thing couldn't do a burnout, and that for sure isn't my style.

I got the truck from a good buddy who passed away in April, I think he mysteriously removed the oil, to urge me towards adding some more power.

Well, placed the order for a motor today, my ass hurts a little.

6.0L LSX, big cam, valve spring upgrade, Ti retainers, ect, ect. They're saying it should be 430hp, and "a shitload" of torque.

It'll be getting hooked up to a 4l80e. I'm guessing the next weak spot is gonna be the rear end.

Yep, guys with big motors always mess up rear ends!
