Emergency water meeting held in Brighton after concerns over E. coli contaminationPosted on: 5:33 pm, July 3, 2013, by Brooke Way (http://kdvr.com/author/kdvrbrookeway/), updated on: 05:43pm, July 3, 2013
BRIGHTON, Colo. — An emergency water meeting was scheduled in Brighton Wednesday afternoon due to reports that water in the area tested positive for E. coli.
A Tier 1 alert was issued, which requires the city of Brighton to notify all users within 24 hours.
The county health department has also warned residents and restaurants in the community to take sanitation measures including boiling their water and using paper plates. However, there is no indication that people should boil water on the city’s website.
Some residents told FOX 31 they have received calls instructing them not to drink the water because it is contaminated with E. coli.
Platte Valley Hospital is taking precautions to treat anyone who might become sick with the bacteria, and is already handing out bottled water. The hospital said they have not admitted any patients with symptoms of E. coli.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/general/index.html), Escherichia coli (E. coli) normally lives in people’s’ intestines, and most E. coli is harmless. However, some forms of the bacteria can cause illness.
The emergency meeting is being held at Brighton’s city hall at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
This is a great way to introduce/explain prepping to non-prepper people. A big city that isn't considered in the middle of no where having a water problem.
Got several deep rock water bottles. I've been called insane and over the top by friends and family.....guess who is laughing now!!!!

This is the 3rd instance I've heard of concerning water contamination in the last 3 months. Loveland had a similar issue a couple of months ago and I also heard about a 'boil water order' in Fort Lauderdale, Florida earlier this spring.
Makes me wonder if the standards requiring reporting have been intensified or if we're really having more incidents all of a sudden.
I don't know if either of the incidents I mentioned involved e.coli, I just know both required notification to the populace according to Federal guidelines.

They're much more common than that. Anytime you hear about a main break it'll have a boil advisory with it.. I did an informal survey and atleast weekly if not every day there's a boil advisory somewhere in the us that'd surprise you.
It was kinda weird last night seeing all restaurants and fast food joints closed down.
Went to the grocery store to grab some ice since I had to dump mine and seen the veggie isle had been cleared out.

Thanks Grey.
We're not on their system, but ..... you get to drink it for 24 hours before being notified? Perfect.
Yea it's dead up here. We were supposed to hear something but no call yet, hell I never got the first reverse 911 call.

We didn't get a call either, only way I knew is that my wife is a nurse at the hospital. They started making preparations right away. Although 9news stated that they would be giving water to everyone, instead of just patients and their guests [facepalm] So I spent the night drinking beers to cleanse my gut :-)

Could be worse. Could be a meat recall on ground beef. You hear and read about processor X recalling 25K lbs of ground beef that was sold Feb 2013. HOWEVER they don't announce anything till April, 2 months later. Don't know about you , when we buy meat, it's usually gone within the week.

Its a good day to be self-reliant...
I had no idea that this was as common as some of you are saying. What I find most alarming is the lack of notification in a timely manner. Food recalls are bad enough, but I'm one of those that tends to buy in bulk, cook some and store the rest for later. I've got some water set by, but you can bet I'll be setting more aside.
As someone else said on here (Irving, I think) this is a prime time to start people to the prepping mindset.

It's not even remotely as common as some people in here are saying. Why do you think it's all over the news right now, and you never see it on the news?
I'm tied very closely to this incident, and all I can say right now is keep boiling your water. Hopefully the samples that were dropped off last night and will be ready to read tonight come back negative. The bac-t / e-coli test takes 24 hours to fully mature.
I thought the government could protect us from everything...was I wrong?

Boil advisory lifted by KDHE
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded the boil water advisory for the city of Delphos, which is in Ottawa County.
The boil water advisory was issued Tuesday because of a loss of pressure in the water system because of a water main break. Laboratory testing on samples collected indicate no evidence of contamination, and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination have been determined by KDHE officials to be resolved.
...and that was just the first page of my google search.
That's the government for ya, keepin' ya'll safe.

Ok, I guess let me rephrase that, in Colorado it's not as common as some of you make it sound, and everytime there is a water break it doesn't result in a boil order as a previous poster claimed.
If it happened all the time, why all the sudden is Brighton in the new 24/7?

This actually is a VERY good excuse to prep. I never thought of such a thing being a major problem. The old theory is that stores have a 3-day supply (true or not) but in this case the fresh food was contaminated and disappeared in minutes rather than days. Water is bad and the food is bad. Yikes! At least in this case folks can just drive a little ways to visit a different store but it certainly make a person think. This is going to be my go-to story from now on for folks who question even basic preparations.

WTF won't they say what caused it,other than it wasn't their fault?
WTF won't they say what caused it,other than it wasn't their fault?
Probably b/c it IS their fault. Or maybe some yutes of a certain religion that cannot be named were playing games up around the water supply. I'll bet the southern border is more carefully guarded than all the water supply reservoirs around here.
We hold church in Prairie View High School on Sunday. The school is on 120th between I-76 and Hwy 85. It's hooked up to Brighton Utilities. We will have almost 1000 in services on Sunday and we've been advised to not make coffee or use the drinking fountains.

Pretty ridiculous. They are saying they think they found the area and it is isolated but still no solid news or a timeline. I better see some type of credit on my water bill....

Sorry you Brighton guys have to go through this.

No municipality ever acknowledges Fault. Just another reason to have an adequate reserve H2O supply, or availability to process it on hand.
