View Full Version : Buffalo?
Where is a good place to go if a person wanted to take photos of buffalo? -preferably with a very plain/flat background?

there's the buffalo herd overlook off I70 near genesee. there's usually bison there. it's not flat, but it's not super sloped. there are trees there, so this may not be what you're looking at in any way.

Other than the overlook. Ranchers
Montana, but it's kind of a hike...
The spot on 70 near genesse can actually be pretty good if they're in the right place, definitely worth a look.

if you're up for a road trip, there are plenty in and around the parks near Mt. Rushmore.
used to be my pasture. but, then i killed them all and ate them.
my cousin has buffalo at Erie/Dacono and Grover. Just south of the race track at Erie. Im sure they will let you take pictures.
at least I think he still keeps a herd at Erie.

I will go check them out, just for their meats. I bet their incredible.
Take I-70 east to Byers, then head east on US36. About 6-8 miles out, there's a big buffalo ranch that usually has an assload of them in pastures on both sides of the road. And it's as flat as Hannah Storm out there.
Terry Bison ranch on the Colo/Wyo border. They have trips out to the herd.

Yeah, I've seen the odd one or two next to the Dream Stream (they somehow hopped the fence...) but wasn't sure that was a sure enough bet to load up the photo gear and go for a drive. I'm not opposed to distance but would like some subjects upon arrival.

Will Google this, thank you!

I've driven to Idaho Springs 100's of times (probably close to 1,000 times when you count round trip), and I've seen Buffaloes at the over look maybe twice.
There is a ranch up in Longmont that has a bunch of Buffalo. There are slight rises that are tall enough that you wouldn't be able to pass the area off as Pawnee.
Hundreds in SouthPark, hundreds.

Is there still a herd on the north side of Hwy 52, between Foothills and i25?
There is a ranch off of Nelsen road half way between hwy 36 and 63rd ave near Longmont. It is on the north side of the road about a mile and a half west of 63rd street, there are some pretty good size animals in there. There was some calfs running around when I rode by there the other day. Probably not the flattest shots but it is close to you so it might be worth the short trip to check out.

There are two different ranches on nelson road west of Longmont. You can also go to the Plains Conservation Center out in Aurora, the Genesee Park Herd in evergreen, the Daniels Park Herd down near Castle Rock, and also the herd at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.
We have a list of Buffalo Ranchers in the area on our website, you can take a look here to find one close to you. http://www.buffaloranchers.com/members/

Terry Bison Ranch up north and almost anywhere in the Black Hills. Lots of them in Yellowstone if you want to go that far.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I'm sure one of the many places listed will work. :)
