What is the ammo availability like in the Denver area right now? I'm taking a trip down in the latter part of October, and I was considering booking my ticket with Alaska Air so that I can haul 50lbs of ammo back to Anchorage (where it is nonexistent). If I want to buy 500 or 1000 rounds of .45 ACP ball ammo, is it available? Thanks!

You should be able to find it in 50 & 100rd boxes at various places, but I haven't seen much bulk anywhere in a while.

Ditto. It is available but expect you'll be hitting multiple places to gather up the quantity you are looking for. Online would be a better option for getting it in bulk but the $100 plus shipping to AK makes it tough.

The ammo situation is much, much better. I've been to several (5-6) shops in the last week. Not as good as it used to be, but I'm seeing most places have a reasonable selection of 50 and 100 rd boxes. Some even have 500/1000 rd cases available but the prices are still less than ideal.

Order online, have it delivered to Denver where ever you are staying and use your plan to haul it home.

Sent from my electronic ball and chain.

^^^This.

Some good suggestions here. Most of what my reply was going to entail has been covered. Good job, Gents!

Even in the best of times, I've never seen a vendor in CO be cheaper than it can be had online.

I agree. Order it online, have it shipped to Denver and haul it home in your luggage.

I have been to Alaska many times (Ex in laws live in Wasilla) and the prices there have never been as good as what you can get in the lower 48.

this is your best option, unless you just plan to drive around all day picking up a box here and there.

What airline permits 50lbs of ammo as checked baggage? I wouldn't assume this unless you get it in writing.

United checked firearms policy permits only 11lbs of ammo.

Honestly, the ammo allowed is monitored more by the TSA. I flew out of Salt Lake City with a Kimber .45, Kimber .22, and 650 Rounds of .45 ACP ball ammo. The TSA agent smiled and walked up and said "Nice Guns! My partner and I are hunters and we think it is cool you are flying with all that ammo!".

While I agree you should check the Airlines policy, keep that in mind.

One other thing. Alaskan Airlines is better about their policy on Ammo. They have a LOT of people flying in from the lower 48 every year for hunting trips that want to bring their own ammo. Who goes to Alaska for a hunt with 20 rounds of ammo? lol

Only Alaska Air. I've taken up approximately 50 lbs of ammo with them 15-20 times now. I also ship it up with them on occasion but it is a lot more expensive. I've taken up more than 11 lbs of ammo when I have traveled with a firearm through several other airlines and never been questioned about the weight, but with Alaska Air I just put the factory boxes in a cardboard box and tape the heck out of it. TSA always opens it, but they tape it back pretty well.
