Just got back from Tucson where we bought a home to winter in (Green Valley). While there I stopped in at Wal-Mart and Dick's. Both had plenty of ammo, except .22lr, with no limit. I stocked up on 9, 40 and 45. They both had .223/.556 and other rifle calibers as well.
Why is Colorado the bastard child even before the anti legislation?

I noticed the same thing at gun stores in Idaho in June. There didn't seem to be much of a shortage of anything, anywhere.

I was in Florida a few weeks back and they were just as dry as we are (if not worse).

Where to check will really depend on which route you will be taking. ???

Dunn's Sporting Goods in Pevely, MO is on your route (ok a slight detour) and had Varget (among other things) on the shelf the last time I was there a few weeks ago. Also, if you are driving through St. Louis you should stop at the Cabelas. Not the cheapest, but had everything I wanted in stock.

Colorado is the most recent state to fall victim to the Liberal anti-gun agenda. People who were "on the fence" regarding the purchase of a firearm & ammo immediately shat bricks when the anti-gun bills went up and it's been hell for us since then. Until "those" people quit freaking the f*** out, we will continue to see ammo shortages.

According to my dad, MO is in the same boat as we are...mostly. If you take I-70 through MO, you can stop in @ MidwayUSA in Columbia. Other than that, not much around.

Last I knew, in IL, you have to show a FOID (IL issued Firearms Owners Identification Card) to buy ammo there.

Last time I attended an Illinois gun show, even though I am a Colorado citizen holding a current hunting license, the vendors would NOT sell me any ammo of any caliber because I did not have a valid Illinois FOID. Of course you cannot have the Illinois FOID unless your are a resident of that crappy State.
Was not supposed to work that way but the vendors are extremely cautious to the extreme when it comes to selling ammo and a FOID has to be shown first before a customer can even HANDLE any firearms. Probably won't be long before we have the same requirements here in our wonderful Liberal State of CO.[Mad]

We don't have to go that way -- we were headed that way but the recalls changed things. Let's get Hudak out then rally behind anyone-but-Hickenlooper in 2014. We can still take this state back.

I hope that if we can do this that ammo will become more common. I am tired of having to give up my left nut for .45 ACP fmj.

I agree, I think Aloha_Shooter is correct. If we can get that manbearpig Hudak out of that wide-ass chair she occupies...we have a great chance at getting these rediculously unenforceable laws taken off the books. Either the Sheriff's will win their lawsuit OR perhaps we can get them put on the ballots and just vote them off ourselves.

The Cabelas stores seem to have a lot of ammo, and good selections, except for .22 of course. I stopped in the Thornton store today, and it was as crowded as the Pepsi Center on game night. I couldn't believe how many people were in there.

cabelas in lone tree has a pretty nice selection. I was in sportsmans warehouse in springs today and they didnt have ALOT but seemed to be fairing ok aside from .22LR. specialty sports in springs is loaded up with just about everything except .22LR and every conceivable mag for any type of pistol out there except a damned P220...[Rant1] I did however find a half assed decent selection of .22LR at the PX on carson, limit of one box per customer per day for about 30$ for 525 Remmington lighting bolt.

No tax out the door, that's not half bad.

The Cabelas .22LR blowout on the same ammo came in arorudn $25/box. Same one box/day/per person limit. .22LR at the gun show was still stupid but I think I saw a couple of the Golden Bullet there for $35. Lots of PPU at the show at reasonable prices. .40rd is the new .45ACP price, .30-.32/rd for 9mm.

Washington state is just as bad as here, but things are getting better. I am hoping that the ramp up in production continues and drives prices down for a while here in the near future. My shooting has gone way down to the point of being non-existent in recent months due to shortages and the fact that every shooting range within two hours of my house either has a 2 year waiting list or was washed down the river during the flood.

It all depends on when you hit the store.
Last week I went in after work and got 3 boxes of the M22 22lr (3000 rounds) at 8th St.
I saw 500rd boxes of American Eagle 7.62X51 at the Woodmen WalMart last weekend.

I think it only went up $25? I guess it depends on when you last bought one. ~6-8 months ago it was $175 pre tax.

I dunno... I can still find mk262 online for the same pre-idiocy price. I guess that is where I am trying to understand everyone that has to get ammo locally. I understand buying local and supporting the local economy, but when they don't have what you need or are charging way too much, free market is your friend.

just my 2 cents.

Talked the the girl at the gun counter at e woodman Walmart this morning. She said that she had seen the 1k round case of .223 recently, but did an inventory check for me and they didn't have any. She didn't know when they would be getting more. Price was $370 (I think).

I went to Cabelas in Lone Tree last night and holy hell! Manna from heaven! They had tons of ammo all over, all types and sizes. 5.56 took up three shelves and was decently priced. Between $.40-.50 a round depending upon bullet type. 55, 62 and 75 grain. Cheap steel cased to cheap brass cased to good quality stuff. No limits with the exception of .22.

Got to Chicago yesterday. I stopped in about 4 Walmarts across Nebraska, 3 in Iowa and 3 in Illinois. Before you judge, I was traveling alone without a rigid time schedule and taking the opportunity to do research for the group here. Besides, it was a way to stretch my legs and take care of business.

Anyway, I am happy to report, the ammo situation in Colorado is not a fluke. Nebraska was similar to Colorado with plenty of shotgun, good selection of center fire rifle and handgun, but no 22. A few of the counter tenders said they had some 22 that morning but it was gone pretty quick. As I went further east, the shelves got thinner. Iowa had less rifle and handgun ammo around. Illinois shelves were really bare and I got some pretty pissy responses when I asked about it.

It looks like Colorado is a bit better stocked then our neighbors.

I went to Cabelas at 144th and I25 today. They were out of most of the 50 round or bigger packs of .223. They had plenty of handgun ammo so I picked up some .40.

A pupil goes to school and sits down to take the test. Here is one of the questions:

2008: After the presidential election, there was a run on ammo and it took a while before the prices/shelves returned somewhat to normal. Johnny's shooting hobby was curtailed until ammo was once again widely available.

2012: After the Sandy Hook shooting, there was a run on ammo and prices/shelves have not yet returned to what they were 13 months ago. Johnny's shooting hobby was curtailed until ammo was once again widely available.

2016: After the presidential elections, or the next mass shooting, there will be a run on ammo, AR's, Etc. Johnny's shooting hobby will be curtailed until ammo is once again widely available.

Now, based on the above, what should little Johnny do?

A) commiserate with others who no longer have ammo either
B) take up basket weaving while ammo is unavailable.
C) sell all guns and spend the proceeds on that culinary course being advertised on late night TV
D) wait until after the 2016 elections or next mass shooting to see if there will ever be another run on ammo
E) set aside a little ammo during times of plenty so as to keep the shooting hobby alive during future ammo shortages

I picked option E but with Obama being the best firearms salesman to ever walk the plant my friends bought guns like they were candy. Soon after i was asked if i wanted to go to the range 4 times more often then i was in the previous years, and who can say no to a range trip. With the new circumstances i was forced to pick option A but thankfully the time to pick option B, of the underwater variety might i add, has not come up yet.

I went to Cabelas in Lone Tree yesterday after getting back in town around 2PM and they had no .22LR.

However, they did have a metric shit ton of centerfire pistol and rifle ammo. No trophy rounds for .308, but if you waited until now to get your 3rd rifle ammo, you're a dumbass.

They had quite a bit of HSM .308 168gr BTHP reloads for $17.99/20 box. I've shot it and it performs as goo as Fed GMM @$27-29/20rd box. I picked up some more and some (a bit) overpirced 100rd value pack WWB .45acp @ $47.99 each.

In addition to other factors of course, limiting ammo to 10 boxes of centerfire and 100 rds of .22LR is helping curtail the gluttons and stabilizing supply. I do hope Hornady picks up production on .308 Interbond sometime soon, my previously adequate supply is dwindling.
