Based on the article, it sounds like the only involvement that Obama has is:

"The thin new hats have a feminine line that some officials think would make them look just as good on female marines as on males - in keeping with the Obama directive."

Sound like Obama made a directive that the uniforms for men and women should look good on both men and women. I guess I don't get that directive, but didn't the Army come out with a unisex BDU? I'm just remembering vaguely, so if I'm wrong, I do apologize.
But they do look so much better in the old hats.

Eh, style is always a part of it when you're talking about the dress uniform -- and hell, even the "combat" uniform. I've never heard more whines out of the Air Force than when McPeak changed the uniform to make us look like we all worked for American Airlines or British Airways or when the AF tried to put some blue in their service-unique uniform (which would have camo'd up well against my carpet but not in the Real World) along with a wide freaking belt.

Still, I don't see why they're changing the hat -- there's nothing I can see in the Obama directive that would have kept them from just making a women's hat that looked more attractive on women while keeping the men's hat traditional. Does this mean the AF is going to start making men wear buckets too?

Hmm ... Reagan's military advisers moved the services to adopt a common BDU to save money. Clinton's CSAF dumped decades of tradition to adopt a European-style service dress and CSA took the black beret from the Rangers to push it Army-wide (and was in such a rush to implement it before he retired that he contracted with the Chicoms in order to get enough in the field that it couldn't be easily undone). Obama's Joint Chiefs ... well, I'm damned glad I'm not serving anymore. I don't know whether to blame this travesty on Obama or Amos but either way it's right up there with McPeak's and Shinseki's follies.

When I was in MARINES all purchased their own uniforms. No allowances, nothing. Back then this would have cost us Marines who barely made any money. Everytime something would change, it would cost the ones who could least afford it. And as a 03, we only wore dress uniforms 1 time a year, if that. But, we were of course required to own and maintain them.



Nothing's changed. All Marines buy their own uniforms. Coming out of boot camp, Marines are issued their basic allowance but the cost is withheld from their pay. Officers are the same. Enlisted Marines aren't required to have the dress blues until they become a SNCO or unless their duty assignment requires them to have it (i.e. Recruiting or Embassy Duty, Marine Barracks).

Uniform changes are the norm, whether it is going from sateens to camouflage utilities, woodland cammies to digital. This change is more extreme and worse than the 80s when they had us wear our rank insignia on our cammie covers. That didn't last long.
