I'm a lot more interested in what Reagan was doing in South America during his presidency than I am with uncorroborated middle east accusations. I'm also a lot more miffed by the fact that his "fiscal conservatism" included increasing spending by 66%.

Running cocaine through Arkansas and using the money to fund arms to the Contras in Nicaragua, and all the money he spent was Star Wars...which turned DARPANET into the WWW and Navstar into the GPS! The war on drugs was turned into funding war with drugs!

Go with percentage to GDP instead. He did overspent as he was a hawk on defense.. But it's not as bad as the left portray him as the US GDP grew three fold.

It is also mischaracterized as Reagan 1) was trying to fix the defense deficit that Nixon and Carter rang up and 2) tried to get Congress to reduce the spending but Tip O'Neill's price for increasing defense spending was to increase domestic spending. Reagan's tax RATE cuts increased govenment revenues -- problem was that Congress (then controlled by the Democrats and Tip O'Neill) spent $1.87 for every dollar of additional revenue that came in.

Part of the problem was that Reagan was a realist and knew he couldn't get everything he wanted so he prioritized. Defeating Communisum by fixing the Defense Department and America's standing in the world was #1 to him so reducing the size of government had to take a back seat. Given the world and national situation at the time, I agree with him. What he wanted to do was get the American public to pressure Congress to reduce spending -- in that respect, we the public let him down because we kept reelecting the same stupid spenders.

To be fair to Carter, he finally realized in his last year in office just how bad the Soviets were and started to increase the defense budget but it was too little, too slow, too late. The man was a laughingstock, deservedly so. I think it's funny that he took offense at Obama's administration being called "Carter II" but the reality is that Carter and Obama have been the two worst presidents in American history, bar none. REAL presidential treason was selling our space & missile technology to the Chicoms (Clinton), hollowing out national security (Obama, Clinton, Carter & Nixon), and destroying the national economy (Obama). Not quite treason IMO but still worthy of note were undermining the American space industry (Clinton), misusing the DoJ and IRS for political ends (Obama, Clinton & perhaps Nixon), and hanging a US ambassador and mission personnel out to dry despite 7 hours of live video feed (Obama).

Pretty conservative when compared to the current admin... How did he avoid trampling on the Constitution and Bill of Rights? Oh that's right, they are now considered maleable, and that is OK..........

When you look at military expendures during the Cold War, I think it's fair to characterize it as World War III. And the scope of the conflict confirms that. I believe Korea and Vietnam fit under this umbrella--they were Communist proxy wars.

When you consider Reagan ended WWIII, without any substantial causualties, I think he is a due a great deal of credit. And I'm not saying you were being critical--just saying he deserves a lot of respect.

Compare and contrast with the War on Terror which has been very expensive and we are fighting regional cave-dwelling forces in undeveloped countries stuck in the 15th century.

YMMV
