You gotta man up, wifebeater and shorts for the win. If you go with Carhart try on the different styles of jackets and see what one fits best. There flannel lined pants are nice also.
Gortex top and bottom with polypro undies top and bottom and matterhorn boots. [Coffee]

If you're looking for great pricing on Carhartt gear, don't forget to check out SierraTrading.com (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/invite~3245332/chadamberg/), sign up for their email and you'll get between 30 and 40% off coupons off their normal discounts. The link there gets you an immediate 10$ gift card.
Right now there's a Carhartt Arctic Work Coat, normally 130, they have it for 85, and with the current 30% off coupon it's 60 bucks. Shipping is fast, and returns are very easy. I got a Carhartt jacket from them like 2 years ago, since I was probably going to be doing a lot of outside work through the winter. That got cancelled, and I returned the jacket 4 months later unused, no questions asked.

Carhartt are very durable and long wearing. Do not get the jackets or coats with the permanently attached hoods unless you like a big lump behind your head when operating equipment and vehicles.
The arctic insulated bib-alls are too warm for except the coldest days of winter, unless you are one of the guys that just lean on a shovel and bitch about how cold it is while everyone else is down in the muck busting arse.

Yeah, Carhartt makes some good stuff for sure.
I still think the best cold weather gear to have, would be a plane ticket to somewhere warm instead.

I'm on my 2nd carhart in 13 years, tried a few other jackets. This one is going on 6 years. If you're seated like an operator get one heavier than you think you need. If you're active like a shoveler get one lighter than you think you need.
There is no such thing as cold weather steel toes. Get a reinforced toe Danner. The steel sucks the heat out of your feet.

I got some dickies lined coveralls for last year working out side. They were warm and toastie on every job. And while working on cars is hard it typically isn't break a sweat hard. Some of that work was flat backing it in the snow.

As for warm boots WITH steel toe? No way in hell that is happening no matter how good your socks. If you really need the toe protection check out titanium toes. They do not conduct cold as much. But they still conduct the cold. Expensive though.

The secret to staying warm is silk shirts. I buy good condition silk shirts at the thrift stores (ARC,Goodwill, etc.) Wear the silk shirt next to the skin. Silk is very light weight, does not chafe and seems to keep me marvelously warm for very little weight. Just be careful washing and do NOT put silk in the dryer! Let it air dry. Wool sweater is super warm worn over silk!

Here are the dickies I use. Fucking awesome. When it was over 35 though I had to keep the top open to the waist. Too warm. Easy to get in and out of while wearing everything else too with legs that zip open all the way to the top.

ETA: I did an intake manifold on an x5 with ambient temps sitting right around 15 degrees. In case you are wondering that really sucks. My body was completely comfortable in that weather wearing long johns, regular work cloths and the dickies on top. I had a wool beenie. The only thing cold was my hands because I couldn't wear decent warm gloves and work.

For boots the Muck Boot Arctic Sport is hard to beat. Plenty warm with a heavy wool sock and not as bulky as baffins. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Muck-Unisex-Arctic-Sport-Steel-Toe-Extreme-Conditions/1342775.uts?productVariantId=3125659&WT.tsrc=CSE&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=1342775&rid=40&channel=GoogleBaseUSA&mr:trackingCode=946B98CC-3445-E211-BA78-001B21631C34&mr:referralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=34214259431&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=58909527191&gclid=CMSg5u68tboCFaY1QgodNU0AFw
For base layers go over to http://www.steepandcheap.com (http://www.steepandcheap.com/) and keep a eye out in the gear cache section. Plenty of under armour, icebreaker, smartwool etc... for cheap compared to normal retail, but expensive compared to wal-mart, there's a reason they cost more and are well worth it.
For hats/ski mask I have yet to find anything warmer than the duluth trading shoremans fleece stuff. They also have a windproof/waterproof work glove that's absolutely kick ass in the winter.
A good base, regular shirt/pants and then carhartt insulated bibs and parka and you're good to -20.

Flannel or arctic lined Dickies or Carharts for the win.

you should tell your cheap ass boss to provide you with some quality work gloves.
my buddy uses carhartt up in nebraska working electrical outside. another one is a welder on the different plants (nuclear, hyrdo, coal etc) and he uses the same thing. insulated stuff is the best. electrician smoked his jacket somehow and the sleeve was all burnt up. he still used it till I bought him a new one for christmas a few years back.

Winner. You NEED a multi colored pony hair trench coat and jeans with leather shins.

Sadly the boss is right on that one. Most of the time I need the tactile feedback from my finger tips for the small hand tools and nuts and bolts. Light disposable gloves is about all I can wear. For the big stuff I would put on insulated mechanics gloves but most of that job I needed to be in light disposable gloves warming my hands every few minutes.

This is who my employer gets our cold weather gear from: http://www.shoparamark.com/home
Half of us have the full bunny suit: http://www.shoparamark.com/style?assort=adsweb_public_assortment&style=325
I have these: http://www.shoparamark.com/style?assort=adsweb_public_assortment&style=328 and http://www.shoparamark.com/style?assort=adsweb_public_assortment&style=1308
Both are extremely comfortable, very warm, durable and pretty inexpensive if you spend a lot of time outside and don't want to drop the money on real backpacking gear like from REI.
Might look here for boots.

I've been trying out Kenyon base layers for a year. Rayon (bamboo)/nylon mix. So far I like them. Soft, warm and don't seem to retain smell.
Polypro liner socks wool outers.
Beany for the head. I like fleece. Usually carry a couple.
Carharts for coats and Dickies for pants.
Patigonia has a couple of big sales a year. You can't beat there base layers. Dickies has an online sale close to Xmas, IIRC.
