You have to remove the whole front of the car to get to the engine? Nothing like easy to maintain is there.

What did it need? An oil change?

but Jim, I thought you said the bmw was the overpriced hyundai?
How dare anyone compare one of the greatest foreign car makers to the "Korean Ford." Sounds like jealousy in Jim's assessment of BMW....[Coffee]
How much is that little fix gonna cost to repair for that Audi owner? My buddy has a 2000 Audi A6 that needed a few "minor" fixes (I think water pump and O2 sensor) and it was extremely costly- enough that he said he's done with Audi, then went and bought a 2005 Mercedes... Go figure!

Holy Crap!
You can just unbolt it and slip it forward about 2 inches, but by that point fuck it I am pulling it off to the side like this and sitting down and doing the belt that way.
Here's a really expensive VW.

Funny, anyone think there's a car built by dodge chevy or ford in the last 10 years that's much easier to work on? Or that is not full of metric bolts? Hell the 90s chevy, dodge, ford were full of metric, if not metric and SAE on the same vehicle! Not to mention the metric headed SAE bolts. Or how about the SAE engine and metric chassis? Almost better, the mix of metric coarse and extra coarse threads on the same vehicle. At least the imports are consistent in the stuff they use! Well, toyota is anyway, pretty sure nissan is, honda is, and Ill best audi is along with VW.
A 4" grinder makes any bolt any size you want. [dig]

my 99 tahoe was easy to work on. My new 2013 silverado looks just as easy. the tahoe did suck when I rebuilt the engine due to the metric/SAE bolts. that was a PITA but it got done.

Agreed. But thats a truck vs a car. Totally different animal.
I thought it was bad when I had to take the intake manifold off my 00 Dodge Stratus to change out the back three spark plugs. Or take the front left tire off to change out the battery.

GM was very good at 1/2-1/2 in the early 80's. At least most of the metrics were blue.[Flower]
My sister had an Audi A4 convertible, nice car even though it was slow, cost her thousands in maintenance. That is the thing about Audi, BMW, Mercedes, they are nice cars but people forget that these companies expect the owner to maintain them religiously and that maintenance is expensive unless you can do it yourself.

Recently replaced the heater core in my late model F150. Had to remove the entire dash to get it out. Made me miss my old 60's powerwagon. You could SIT in the engine compartment and work on anything in there. Good old days of easy access.

I have had a jetta TDI for about a year now. At first I was frustrated about needing new tools to work on it, fancy fasteners like triple-squares and such. But after doing a fair number of involved repairs (bought it cheap knowing it needed some work) I am digging the simplicity. Having worked on Jeeps, Fords and Chevys, it always seemed like I needed to use every tool in the box to do a simple job. There is much less variety of fasteners on the jetta. 3 wrenches pulled the entire exhaust/turbo/EGR from the car and everything had space to be removed without pulling half of the rest of the car. There is certainly more forethought in regard to maintenance on the VW than is generally applied by the American big 3.

Ya'll never had to R&R a heater core in a 72 Volvo...Flat rate was 16 hrs, and I defy any MOFO out there to come close to Flat Rate.

Heater core on the new x5 is upwards of 22 hours. I honestly want no part of that.

I did it on a 335i once. Got it almost all the way back together and was going to put in the screen for the navigation. Couldn't for the life of me find the connector for it. Hunted for about 40 min till I found it down by the shift lever in the center console. Could not route it up with out completely removing the whole dash again. Why would you make that harness that long? It litterally came out of a harness up by the screen hole and dropped down all the way to the center console. I was a little irate at myself for missing it.

So it is the fault of engineering that you made a dumbass move and forgot an assembly step?
I am just kidding. Anyone who has worked on cars has made a dumb move like that before. I have my own instances like reassembling an auto transmission only to find a thrust washer in the rinse pan and have to completely disassemble the tranny again. It is times like those when my language gets pretty ripe.

I guess they built the car around the heater core. ;-)
Do you remember what model that was? I had a '72 164E. It was my first car. Damn, I got a lot of speeding tickets in that little tank when I was living in TX and the limit was 55mph.

It was a long time ago...I worked on it in 1979 when I was turning wrenches for a living, but I think it was the 240

Having owned several of both I can say with the utmost certainty that there is no comparison. They share frames and general items but the difference is night and day in fit & finish. You most definitely get what you pay for in the Audi line. Not that VW makes a bad car it's just that Audi is better. Kind of like Lexus v Toyota. Toyota doesn't suck but anyone who says that Lexus is an overpriced Toyota probably owns a Toyota and secretly wanted a Lexus. lol

Not entirely certain. It came to me with the lower water temp sensor pushed out and a no start complaint. I filled it with water and it poorer out of the lower hose where the temp sensor is. And dribbled from the thermostat. Pulled plugs and found crud on number four plug. Stuck a bore scope in and found debre. The valves wouldn't move when the engine was turned over by hand. The valves moved in the other cylinders.
Theory one: thermostat leaked a little and sucked in an air pocket. Overheated head at #4 cylinder. Pressurized cooling system and pushed water temp sensor . Dead engine. But doesn't really explain the metal to metal connection in #4. Piston is dead.
Theory two: jumped tooth, metal to metal, blown head gasket, pressurized cooling system. I suppose I should check timing. Maybe later. Too busy right now since it really doesn't matter it is dead no matter what.
I like two better for now. But need to look at timing to be certain.

Jumping a single tooth on that motor would cause it to run like ass but not make physical contact. Besides, if it did it wouldn't clear out one cylinder & seize locally. It would crash most all your valves into pistons & mangle them all real good. I'd need to see it myself to get a better guess but I wouldn't think it would be #2. Even if it had a balance shaft/belt that went it would pretty much give the same result I just described.

Yes. But all of that was secondary once I saw the parts in the cylinder. I thought about pulling the valve cover and also checking timing but I have been booked way too solid to do that. Had a cancellation today due to the snow and was happy for a little more time.

Part of me wants to see this in person so I can play detective too since I used to live for turning wrenches but the other part of me is thankful I own newer reliable vehicles under full manufacturer's warranty that I maintain so I don't have to worry about such things in 12 degree weather. Nope. Not here. My Tacoma had some silly seatbelt recall but I told them I don't need no stinkin' seat belt! Actually, mine wasn't one of the targeted whoopties so I'm good. That and the Kia surprisingly hasn't had anything serious which I was surprised about being the first year of an all new model & a Kia. lol I know they've come a long ways but I expected something to surface.

What exactly happened internally is not a major issue though. It done broke, need new. Curiosity may get the better of me when I have some breathing room, may not too.

True.
It is how you do the timing belt as well...
first time I did the timing belt on my allroad (2.7T) I just about crapped myself. I gladly paid someone $1000 when it needed it again
