View Full Version : Which 40 cal?
So, I've been toying around with the idea of picking up something in 40 S&W but not sure what. Follow me here for a minute....
When I think of something in 9mm I usually picture a Glock or a Beretta. (The High Power comes to mind as well).
When I think of something in 45 ACP I think of the 1911.
When I think of something in .357 Magnum I think of a S&W revolver.
But, when I think of something in .40 S&W I just draw a blank.
I guess those older S&W autos sort of come to mind but pretty sure I don't want one of those. Sig maybe?
What handgun comes to mind as sort of the "benchmark" 40 S&W when you think of it?

Don't they make a 1911 in 40?

Look within the caliber: Smith and Wesson? [Dunno]
For what its worth, I LOVE my M&P40c and it is my favorite over my Glock 23 now!
Just about anything chambered in 9mm is also made in .40 S&W.
While I don't think there is any real advantage to .40 S&W, I do enjoy the ability to barrel swap the same pistol into .357 SIG.
SIG P229 and P250 or Glock 22 and 27 here. You are welcome to run a few mags through mine.

I understand that, just curious which exact model first comes to mind when someone thinks of a 40 cal.

The only reason I am even toying with the idea of getting one is that it seems like when 9mm and 45 can't be found anywhere there always seems to be some 40 on the shelves.

Since you're thinking 40. Go for 10mm and make the 45 acp bitches jealous.

Walther P99 if it was good enough for James Bond. What else can be said ?

I haven't watched the newer James Bond films. The PPK will always be James Bond's pistol in my mind.
+1 for the 10mm, but I think of the first gun I ever bought which was a xd 40 s&w... Still have xd9 in fde, but have moved to gen4 glocks.

To get a reliable pistol, you need a gun designed for a particular cartridge. Most manufactures scale up or scale down a design to fit other calibers. When you do that the reliability goes down.
Since most modern design pistols are actually old designs re-vamped... most are 9mm or 45ACP designs changed to fit the 40S&W.
Examples of this are the 9mm Beretta 92 re-done to become the 96 in 40S&W. Glock 17 into the 22. Obviously the 1911 in 45ACP to other calibers.
Even the original 40S&W, the 4006 was a re-worked S&W 9mm design scaled up.
Some guns were designed in 40 from the get go but were not successful like the Beretta 9000S.
So to be true to the original the iconic 40 S&W should be the 4006... but as a redesign I would throw that one out as the icon.
Since the Glock had so many Ka-Boom failures stigma I would throw those out too as the icon; even though the G22 is probably the most reliable 40 available.
There really is no true icon 40. It just falls in the cracks. The USP, FNP-40, XD's are all great too. I haven't even mentioned the Sigs.... there are all great choices. Walther PPS and the Kahr K40 are also great pistols.
I think the great thing about the 40S&W is you don't have to have one particular brand/model to have the must have gun.
Now it is time to move up the the original and think about a 10mm!

I'm a guy and not qualified to comment on clash.
Nice holster though. Who made it?

I love the responses so far . . . especially the 10mm ones since I'm selling one! But my vote for you is the Glock 22 first, followed by the SW M&P 40 and the Springfield. I had an HK USP compact and yes it was designed from the ground up for 40 but I didn't like it and could not get any kind of accuracy out of it but the recoil was low. I never owned the Smith or Springfield in those calibers but all I ever hear about them is good. My Glock 22 is great. I have a gen 2 and the feel and accuracy are unbeatable. I can shoot it as well as a large 9mm. Of course each one of those brands has two or three sizes so you should easily find something that's just right for YOU. However, if you do decide to go even bigger, there's always the (read MY ;) ) Glock 20!!

I think the P99 started with Pierce Brosnan.

Just watched Skyfall... again. In the beginning of the movie he is chasing a guy and after applying a bandage to the dying MI6 guy, the P99 disappears and he is room clearing with a PPK... where did that come from?
When I think .40S&W, I think G22. I am not sure that I would, today choose a G22 over a M&P 40 if it was my first. Nothing wrong with a .40 in a 1911, but the cost will be higher or the reliability will be less as compared to a striker fired pistol.
If you really want a .40, I would consider a G22, M&P, FNS or an XDm.
If the 10mm thing has you reconsidering, look at a 610 or a DW Razorback. Those, to me are the best 2 10mms on the market.

I like the xdm over the glock.
For almost a year I have been exchanging my Glocks in 9mm for 40's. I have conversion barrels for seven of my Glocks, five 40 to 9, two 40 to 357 and two 10 to 40. I have come to the decision that the 9mm is only a 9mm but the 40 can be a 9 or a 357 with just a barrel and a mag. The 10's can go from 10 to 40 or 357 or 9x25 Dillon as well. I have never had any reliability issues with any of them.
All that said I still like my Kahr K40 and PM40.

I had an xdm in .40 and a glock 22. I hear that m&ps are good. Go for any of those.

Steyr m40
That's one I'd really like to try.
I like my G32 which has a .40 barrel and a 9mm barrel, so it's really a G32/G23/G19!!

I owned/ own a Berretta PX4 .40 storm, a Glock23, and a FNS .40. The FNS shot the best, the G23 was the most reliable, the PX4 sucked.
My money would be on a CZ, or an M&P 40 full size though, both help tame .40's snappy recoil nicely.
