I was sick all through Christmas vacation. Whole damn family has been through it. Seems like I'm taking the longest to get back on my feet in my household.
My brother who is my partner at work has been down for two days. I have to go in today because I'm the only one walking and can get 150 ft from the toilet. Somehow if I make it a half day it will impress the bosses????
Fuckem!!! You know how many houses are being built right now? I could swing a dead cat and find a new job.

But here I go..........good slave that I am.......

I'm curious if it's a new strain-did any of you folks that have it get a flu shot ?

One Airborne or Emergen-C per day without fail. I sometimes get a hint of the sniffles when the rest of the house is feeling bad. I get over it quick though.

My son had the flu shot, got sick. Wife had the shot, didn't get sick. I didn't get the shot, didn't get it.

the pediatrician was talking about a half year booster or something. I think the flu shot is a big scam myself. They never know which strain will show up.

It is making the rounds. My daughter had it then gave it to the wife and I.
One day version though so it didn't totally knock us out of commission.
None of us received the flu shot, I think it is a waste anyways. Usually by the time you get sick the damn virus has mutated just a few times...

Wow I thought it was just me. Wasn't sure if it was the flu but I had the chills and shakes so bad right before Christmas, I was laid up in bed for several days. Still was getting over minor effects 10 days later, and even now I still have the occasional cough.

For the folks describing the GI bug, the flu shot won't help. I've heard the big thing going around big right now is that GI bug.
But influenza is certainly on the rise for the US right now. Colorado is listed as "regional activity" but the map always lags by a week or two.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/summary.htm

Looks like so far, the match has been decent:

CDC has antigenically characterized 408 influenza viruses, including 354 2009 H1N1 viruses, 46 influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and 8 influenza B viruses, collected since October 1, 2013.

All 354 of the 2009 H1N1 viruses tested were characterized as A/California/7/2009-like. This is the influenza A (H1N1) component of the Northern Hemisphere quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines for the 2013-2014 season.
All 46 of the influenza A (H3N2) viruses tested were characterized as Texas/50/2012-like. This is the influenza A (H3N2) component of the Northern Hemisphere quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines for the 2013-2014 season.
Three of the eight influenza B viruses tested belonged to the B/Yamagata lineage of viruses, and were characterized as B/Massachusetts/02/2012-like. This is an influenza B component for the 2013-2014 Northern Hemisphere quadrivalent and trivalent influenza vaccines.
The five other influenza B viruses belonged to the B/Victoria lineage of viruses, and were characterized as B/Brisbane/60/2008-like. This is the recommended influenza B component of the 2013-2014 Northern Hemisphere quadrivalent influenza vaccine.

Edit: Having said all that, I'm going to personally get going on my nasal washes here today. Wash your hands like an OCD sufferer, folks! :)

did those and the nyquil / benadryl cocktail. still took a week, and the signs are still lingering.

I must be living right. I get a shot every year now and never seem to get sick. The shot they give us seniors is some kind of a booster shot that supposedly is more potent than the regular shot.

With all the dopers flocking here for "Ski" season, the transmission rate will rise rapidly. Figure 1 week active, 2-3 days transmission time. This will spread nationwide past the states now in it's throws.
The contagious map will be interesting come sunday. Every state will be FLU;)

lol.
The message here, people, don't share your brand new "J's" with out of state dopers. Or Skiiers.

I just had a head cold... sinus congestion and the like, nothing else. Fortunately, it didn't knock me down too hard so I was still able to enjoy my vacation between Christmas and New Years. Today is my first day back to work, and I'm fine for the most part. Just minor congestion lingering. I should be back to normal by the weekend.

Edit: I did not get a flu shot, and have not had one in over 12 years. When I get sick, which is rare, it only takes a day or two to get over it....

There are two things going around that pretty much ruin your day. There is the flu and the GI bug ...now I am not sure exactly which one I had, but my equilibrium was trashed for about a week. I had a couple days where just walking was difficult.

I figured I had something inner ear, and was told that is a side effect of both the GI bug and the flu strain going around. It is essentially full on vomit inducing vertigo when it hits.

I had it for one night. I felt it coming on and pounded tons of vitamins and fresh fruit juices. Nipped it before it really set in hard core. That was the sunday before xmas.

Same symptoms my son had and he was diagnosed H1N1.

I only had/have a slight sore throat, headache, run down feeling. Probably more the holidays and more than usual amounts of alcohol.

I tend to wash/sanitize hands OCD during flu season. If I travel, I wipe down the seat arms, seatback in front, etc. with a chlorine wipe (Noro Virus). I AM that crazy MF doing that shit on a plane.

An employee came in with it this morning and barfed after about 5 minutes being here. Told him to get the hell out and go home. Hit the whole shop with Lysol as soon as he left.

It sucks, but the truth is over 80% of people have it or carry it. Just a fact of life unless you are on an island or something.

Although "both can cause both" most folks who have it, have HSV1.

I should have been more specific. I was referring to HSV1. Which that is what a cold sore is. HSV2 tends to live down below.

I don't so far. I'm not sure that I've ever had the flu before to be honest. I've never missed work for more than one day for sickness in my life.

I find it strange that the flu seems to manifest itself so differently between some people.... I have not had a single ounce of GI trouble. It's been 100% head and lung. As has been the case the only 3 other times I can remember being sick, mine started with a sore throat due to post nasal drip. 36 hours later the sore throat was gone but sinus congestion was heavy. 36 hours after that the sinus congestion was mild because it had transitioned more to phlegm in my lungs than in my head... I am now getting over that last stage and should be back to normal within another 36 hours. Pretty typical progression for me it seems, but I think I've only been sick 3 times since high school.

I suspect a large part of that issue is people using the terms 'flu' and 'cold' interchangeably.

I've never missed work for more than one day for sickness. Starting at lunchtime today I started experiencing text book flu symptoms just like Trot mentioned. I already gave my boss notice I might be out this week.

Wife is in bad shape. Took her to the doc and they are not sure what it is. I do not think it is the flu but I have a box of tamiflu on the counter.
