View Full Version : "I Forgot My Phone"-Poignant video about smartphone obsession
It's a short, 2 min video, but it really illustrates the extreme of smartphone obsession, we as a society need to live in the moment more... Kind of makes me think I should just keep my phone in my pocket a lot more than I currently do, I've caught myself messing with it way too much recently.

I saw an article on the news the other day about how much less you remember special moments when you are taking pictures or videos of those same special moments.

My mom drives me nuts with that. She constantly wants pictures at every family get together. I get it, pictures are nice, but what are you going to do with those pictures? Not a damn thing.

Smart phones, dumb people.
Yeah I tend to not take pictures of events much, because I know I won't look at them later. I do find that I take TONS of pictures of things now. It's because of the internet though. I find when I'm making some project and trying to document it on here, it is kind of annoying to stop all the time to take shots of what I'm doing. Especially since my phone is usually playing music.

Your loss...
Still amazes me the folks that refuse to own a smart phone based on some non existent principal. My phone doesn't consume my life, but I can do just about anything I need to in the palm of my hands.
Now if cost is an issue for you, that's another story, because smart phones can be costly.
I rarely use my phone as a camera, that's what I have a Nikon DSLR for. But it's nice to have the ability when I don't have the Nikon.

$350 for my phone and $30 a month for unlimited data through T-Mobile. Its costly if you let yourself get screwed by ATT or Verizon.

And what about those of us that live in areas with virtually non-existent service? Rarely do I have to leave this general area and even buddies with the baddest of the bad of phones don't get much if any signal back here.
No non-existent principles involved, just no real need. If I need a computer, you'll find me sitting in a designated chair in my house, like now.

They are like any other tool. Use them wisely.
My primary smartphone needs and priorities are simple.
1. Make and receive phone calls.
2. Send and receive (primarily) business e-mail.
3. It is an indispensable portable travel tool - GPS, Airline, car rental, reservations, etc.
4. The camera is for documentation purposes, mostly business, and for posting in the NSA's Post a picture of your latest purchase thread. :D
That chick was hot.....
I like my dumb phone I've run over it with my truck walked over to it and its still fine....Amanda's smart phone fell about 18" onto the floor and was shattered I also always have service she dosent my battery lasts for days her phone lives on the charger I've dropped my phone in the mud water etc shake it off and its fine hers died from a few rain drops hitting it
Smartphone with no internet is as useful as a laptop with no internet.

Your situation sounds like a very valid reason to not own a smart phone. I wouldn't pay for a service I couldn't use either.

At this point a dumb phone is outside my budget, which is why I don't have one. That said, the video makes me feel as though I'm not really missing out on anything that wouldn't be more trouble than its worth. Also, I work on a computer all day and have basically unsupervised access to teh interwebs.

I have a smart phone. I use it when I need it but I really wouldn't miss not having one. I could do just as well with a plain old flip phone. It's just an expensive convenience for me.
I think this makes the point too;

I have a smartphone which I need for work email and on-call contact. I don't use it constantly. I can't stand social gatherings where everyone has their face down in some phone or tablet. Put it down, people. Interact with one another. Live your lives.
I love my smart phone, really helps with work, enhances my quality of life, my son loves to play games on it, I can search for anything, take great pictures and video, set reminders for birthday anniversaries etc or I forget and it fits nicely in my pocket!

Stupid, ignorant, dumbass, POS's use their "smart phone" while driving....
The sad part about smart phones is how it's pretty much eliminated physical photo albums. Looking at pictures on your phone or streamed through your tv isn't the same as thumbing through an actual album.
I personally own a dumb phone, because I don't need instant access to personal email, google. I think the smart phones have taken away personal interaction, people don't talk anymore they just sent you a text. I do have to carry a blackberry for work, sadly it means they can get me any time, there is no leaving work at the office anymore. I do agree with brutal that it is a handy tool when traveling, gps, flights etc.
I only got a smartphone 8mo ago. Mainly for work. Although now if I didn't have one I wouldn't be able to grace you all with my presence ;)
Some of us have no want/need for a smart phone, which in turn causes others to become defensive about their smart phone.
Rather humorous.

Work requires one and some of the features and apps have saved me alot of money personally.
I don't have a phone because I don't have friends. Convenient!

Before I retired I had to have a company smartphone-an electronic work leash. I hated it so bad that after retirement I refuse to even have a cell phone.
They have many good uses but as stated in other posts they have replaced people interaction on a large scale. Just my .02.
I was catching public trans to work one day and I looked down at the light rail passing below. Nearly everyone glued to a phone or tablet, I wanna say 95%. It was quite surreal.
My kids like our phones and the kindle, but they only have an alloted time on them. Some neat apps out there for kids.
heard about this story this morning. Kind of relates to this topic.
Armed mugger who stole a cell phone in Central Park handed it BACK because it was an outdated flip-phone[/h]
Kevin Cook, 25, was walking with a friend near Central Park on Saturday when they were approached by two robbers armed with a gun
The muggers threatened them with death and ordered them to keep quiet and hand over all their valuables
One of the robbers handed Mr Cook's cellphone back to him, uninterested in the three-year-old phone with a sliding keyboard
The assailants were able to escape before police arrived, though Mr Cook was able to use his passed-over cellphone to call 911

i secretly wish our phones were just phones, i remember a time when i kept over 100 numbers memorized in my head. my smart phone has made me dumber by requiring less of my brain power to be exercised.
i get a laugh out of watching people at dinner, noone is talking they are ignoring the people at the table and texting or reading facebook, i think that the phones do hinder people's ability to interact with real live people.

I just had a talk about this with my father-in-law. He's the guy who still doesn't have a cell phone of any kind. He mentioned that smart phones are great for getting things like directions somewhere, allowing you to find alternate routes if there is traffic (he's from LA). But by having the ability to do things like facebook and that other crap, you get way too attached to it. I make a point to not have games or facebook on my phone for that very reason.
Side note: twitter is the absolute worst of all these though. It brings this mindset of "Everyone needs to know what I'm thinking right this second" how many times have you seen athletes or celebrities come out and have to apologize for something stupid they said in the heat of the moment?

Narcissism on display.
Couldn't have said it any better! I've actually been at a bar and heard someone say "Hang on, I gotta tweet this!" Good thing I wasn't drinking anything, or it would have come out very quickly due to extreme disgust.
