It's currently torn apart, going to rebuild it to look similar to this. It'll have a Road King windshield and different pipes though. I actually have the seat off this very bike....the bike got wrecked, the owner parted it out, I bought the seat.

Absolutely loved it. Perfect for rural living, or cross-country touring. Hands down a more capable bike than the BMW GS1150 I once had. I imagine I'll get another one someday, but I picked up a Pinzgauer, and can really only justify one vehicular toy at the moment.

The three wheel inline is a Ross Hoss, from what I've been able to find out, they were sold in kit form or built by a company in Texas in the 1970's. No suspension to speak of and those 4 chains make a lot of noise. Its over 6 ft long and heavy.
Not sure who did the brickwork, either a talented freestyle mason or a drunk.

Hated the vtec. Fucking thing might or might not stutter in a turn if it kicked in. Supposedly the later ones they fixed but ive got no interest in finding out.

Depending on the sumo, <65mph they're a blast! >65mph and you feel like you're on a moped on the freeway.

The day my streetbike came home:
2005 GSXR 1000 - Had 1400 miles when I bought it last year.
Now has an Akrapovic Slip on, PCIII USB, Morimoto H-1 HID kits for both bulbs, braided brake lines, WC Case covers and sliders...
It's stupid how much fun this bike is to crank on.

Thinking about a garage shuffle.
The BMW is a great bike but Its my wife/visitor bike and $10k is a lot to just collect dust most of the year. Considering selling the BMW and picking up a buell blast for the same duty on the cheap. The XT is a neat trail bike but gutless. Considering giving up on trail riding, or trading for a drz400 or something in that neighborhood.

I also have a "Modern Classic". I wanted one of these when they came out in '98 but I opted for another bike. Found this last year and am in the process of "restoring" it. Not that it needs much or needed much. Mostly routine maintenance, still needs a few minor things! Its not mint, it wasn't a garage queen, but for as old as it is, its a solid 8 out of 10 and completely stock down to the stock turn signals.

I had that exact same bike. It was awesome. The only bike I have ever been just cruising along minding my own business and then looked down and was surprised to see that I was doing 110 in a 45. So smooth and so fast that I could only tell I was going fast by the rate I was passing other vehicles. I miss it a little, but I imagine if I still had it I would a) not have a license b) not be alive.

I had a Sprint ST. I loved that bike. When the company I work for filed bankruptcy, I sold it. It was a great bike.
I've been pondering a KLR lately.

I dig it so far. Very very sloooooow compared to what I'm used to, but being able to hit dirt, and a comfy riding position, make up for it.

Absolutely love it. It's by far the best sportbike I've ever ridden. It doesn't have the top end of, say a new ZX10R or BMW S1K, but I'm not missing it, and can outcorner and outbrake both in stock form. And the sound of the V4 is just icing on the cake.

Haven't ridden my HD since I blew my ACL in 2005. Currently have it torn apart for rebuild/refresh, it's a 1982 FLT 5-speed Shovelhead, gonna build it into a Road King clone, lower, lighter and cleaner. Need it lower, it was a really tall full dresser and a top heavy pig.
My dream is to someday have a bike that's old, slow, leaky and stinky. An old HD, somewhere between mid-30's to late 60's would be great! A '56 Panhead would be ideal. A real machine that requires TLC and attention. My first HD was a '56 Pan, I'd kill to have it back.

Stig, you are making me very jealous! Would love to hear your opinion on each of those beasts!
Well, out of the group my absolute favorite was the Ducati. There's just something about Vtwins in superbikes. The torque it produces make the jap bikes feel like I was riding scouters. Unfortunately the power falls off on the top end, but on a road course it has the perfect power balance. Plus its just has sexy body lines. The BMW is the only inline four cylinder that almost replicates the Vtwin feel, but it keeps pulling hard all the way up to 12k and then after that it feels like you hit another power band and it starts pulling even harder. The BMW is definitely the fastest out of the bunch and one of the best handling with a well rounded electronics package with it being the only superbike with grip heaters from the factory for those chili track mornings [Coffee].. The jap bikes are just reliable. You can abuse them and beat on them and they just keep going. They don't handle as well as the others, dont have the power or torque, none of the fancy electronics, but they are just all around fun bikes to ride around town and the occasional track day or take long trips. The Duc is the most uncomfrotable to ride, especially if you try to take it on a trip due to it's aggressive ergo's setup purely for racing. The KTM was the most comfortable as you sit really low with the grips positioned kind of high. Riding this bike made me feel like I was riding a touring bike with a sporty vtwin. Either way all these bikes were a total blast to ride..

I knew a guy once that bought one of those big Ducati Monsters. Said he wasn't impressed with it and told the dealer about it. They asked how he was riding it and he told them, and they said "no no no, take it to XXXX rpm, hang on tight, then open it up". He sold it promptly afterwards! Scared the shit right out of him.
I had a Monster. Wicked bike. Loved that thing.
Going shopping Saturday, wish me luck! Hoping for a Fat Bob, we'll see. Wait....that doesn't sound right, FXDF, oh yeah that's better LOL.

Prior to 2014 the largest displacement factory Monster was the 1100 EVO @ ~100HP. Not exactly a beast but I guess for some it'd be handful.

In my dreams I ride a Honda 50. I had friends in the 60's that had Honda 50's. It was cool. The Honda 90 was WAY cool, and the Honda 150 was Nirvana, on steroids.
My mom was a radio dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol, she said if she ever caught me on a motorcycle, SHE would kill me. She wasn't going to get "that call" on the night shift.
In WWII, she was a Marine Boot Pusher at Camp Lejeune. I believed her.
I've never owned a motorcycle.
Fortunately, she didn't have any opinions about aircraft.
I had to wait until Wed. to pick up the '14 FXDF. Immediately headed out for a nice ride, put on roughly 150 miles, this pic is down in Palmer Lake (one of my favorite short rides). Also stopped by the new gun store in Sedalia, very nice guy, picked up an inside the pocket holster for my Shield lol.

Its a great bike. I had a 2009 450xc-w prior to this one and the 350 feels like a mountain bike. You definitely pay a little more. But I think it's worth it.
Something to keep in mind, the titles on KTM's don't say "for off-road use only". So getting it plated is super easy. I just went to the DMV and it was no different than getting plates for my street bike. The EXC comes with a lot of smog crap that needs to be taken off (so I've read). You might just want to get the XC-W and just plate it. Although the Six Days certainly is sexy. Check out the 350 as well. It's got a surprising amount of power. It would get old on the highway, but it definitely has the speed to ride around town and what not.
I just bought this KTM. 150 horsepower certainly makes for a comfy ride on the paved roads. Even though I try and stay off them as much as possible. It's a beast.

I've owned my 85 XT since 1998. Great bikes. Don't remove the baffle from the exhaust, as it doesn't make it run any better. The carbs are the most convoluted, pointless design ever, so rejetting is a pain. The engine itself makes an anvil look fragile, however.

What tires are those on your DRZ?
They look like Continental TKC80s... they are available in 17 inch sizes that are appropriate for the SM

TFOGGER has it right. They are the TKC80's. 120/70 17 front and 150/70 17 rear. It was the less expensive way to make the SM dirt ready for high country riding. Moving forward and funds allowing, I would probably source a set of wheels from the E/S DRZ for any more technical riding...
Sent from my Id.
I don't know if Cycleracks' rear rack for the 400S will fit the SM, as they don't say on their site, but if you are interested in a rear rack, Cycleracks is the way to go. Should give em a call if you are interested in it. Have had them on last two bikes and they're great.
Was just clicking through their customer pics and realized they had a picture of my old bike on there!
I'd forgotten I had sent that picture to them. When I was living in an apt over in West COS, I had a fireplace and so did the old man next to me. So I'd drive up in the mountains and get dead-fall for firewood for us that winter.

Test rode a new Street Glide special today with the new 107ci engine. I didn't care for the bike itself (my Road King rides and handles much nicer) but the new engine is pretty nice. I didn't think it had much noticeable power over the 103ci but it runs really smooth and the power delivery is smooth and constant. Kind of weird sitting on a Harley where the mirrors and handlebars don't vibrate at idle.

Please spend you hard earned $$$$ on good gear... or and on a bigger bike.
Never will you ever see your investment as a good thing on a bike.... especially on a bike less than a 1000cc... even a 1000cc doesn't hold it's value.
Only investment I did on mine was a quarter turn throttle, sprocket, steel braided brakes, and a quick shifter... soon some race skins... and I have a 11 ZX10R... I'm almost completely happy with it [Beer]
I purchased my last one as an "investment" . However your right , most of the time that is not a good move. But smart to get a smaller bike your comfortable on then upgrade.

Thought I had posted in here, but I guess not. Here is my current ride. 2012 Sportster Iron punched out to 1200cc. Raised up, dirtbike bars, skid plates, spoked wheels, knobbies to make it my version of an old school scrambler. I've had a blast pissing of the ADV guys with their BWM's that think adventure is just dirt roads. These pics are from last month when I took it up Mosquito pass solo, passed 2 "ADV" guys on my way up that had turned around and told me the trail was too hard and there was no way in hell I would make it. I've ridden on trails all over the country on dirt bikes, and competed from coast to coast in rock crawlers, I won't lie this trail, on this bike at 40 years old was one of the hardest things I have ever done physically. On a dirtbike it would have been no problem.

Gotta love low clearance.

I love your bike
I have a customer with an XR1200 Harley that he put aggressive dual sport tires on, he takes that thing EVERYWHERE. Huge respect for you!

Thanks a ton, still a lot I want to do but it's been a blast.
That's so cool
Thanks!

Yea it's a lot of fun. I've spun the rear tire/tube in the wheel and ripped the valve stem off twice now, any ideas? I thought rim lock, but have been told it'll be impossible to balance.

It's a 3 inch wide rear wheel? A bead lock might be an option, generally they weigh about 3 1/2 ounces, so it might be a challenge to balance, depending on where it wants weight in the first place. Finding a 3 incher might take a little effort as well, most manufacturers only go to 2.5. The only other real option would be to run higher pressures, which would compromise traction a bit, or go old school and use short sheet metal screws into the beads like drag guys do with car slicks.
Would a TW200 rear rim fit? (at work an can't see what you are riding) It's like a dang ATV tire almost :)

I can't remember what I ended up having them build me off the top of my head, but I wanna say it's either 3" or 3.5". I've also been running it at like 32psi the whole time.

No way that would fit, don't think it would help the problem either though. The problem is there is just so much torque and traction the wheel spins and the tire doesn't and it ends up ripping out the valve stem.

Some of the old school CB750s and XS1100s used rim locks (2 in the rear wheel) in 16 inch wheels. I'll have to look to see how wide the rims were...

Ah. I've never had that problem with my TW200. (of course)

I'm minus the BMW f800. Hit a deer 2 weeks ago and I'm laid up recovering. Bike went over forward, landed upside down and tore off the dash/ bashed in the panniers. I broke 7 ribs in 12 places and broke my collar bone.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161026/86dc430bb6c9a813cc470ef83fb794f3.jpg

Ouch that's no fun. The bike is easy to fix, hopefully you mend well.
Holy shit. Glad your going to mend.
Let us know when the venison steaks are on the bbq
Holy crap! Glad you're on the mend. Hitting a deer is no joke (I know of at least 2 that weren't so lucky). Based on BMW's cost on bodywork, that bike is destined for the auction... :-(

Damn! That chip-seal road surface doesn't look like the smoothest place to land... Best for a quick recovery.

I was geared up pretty well, not a scratch on me.
In that pic I'm actually in front of the bike in relation to direction of travel.

What gear were you wearing? I'm always looking for info and possible upgrades.
I wear a Darien jacket, gloves of some sort, selection depends on weather, Nolan helmet... never sandals...
Yikes dude..............[sorry]
Glad you are pretty much ok. Were you running just the stock headlight ? The newer GS bikes have much better headlights, at least the ones with LED.
My GS1200 lighting sucks ! This might push me over the edge to get some aux lighting on mine.

You were fortunate. I've hit one and not went down. Watched a good friend hit a horse. He didn't survive.

I've hit a couple of prairie dogs and never even felt them. Hope like hell I never hit a deer.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Damn! Hope you heal quickly and completely. Glad you were properly geared up, could've been a lot worse.
Glad to hear you're relatively okay. Dang deer.

I was wearing my Scorpion AT950 helmet, Joe Rocket Ballistic revolution jacket, rev'it pants, 2x layers of Cabelas thermals and Olympia gore Tex gloves. I don't really like the jacket as it's button front flap scoops the wind, makes your chest cold first and the wrist seals are just an awful idea, but I love the helmet and pants.

i have a set of Denali Aux lights that are so bright they make the stock headlight irrelevant. I saw the deer easily. slowed down and went around and hit the ass end of the Third deer to jump out , I jumped it, then landed with the front still sideways, pitching the bike over forward and catapulting me past it.
Wow! You win the 'Chuck Norris of the Month' award for surviving that....
