So my Saturday pretty much sucked.
Decided I'd try out some new ammo I got in a revolver before subjecting it to an NFA gun. I got three rounds in and then this happened.
I'll let the pictures do the talking for me.

Good thing you caught that brother. That could have made your Saturday a lot worse.

Must have been powdered mouse farts as the charge. At least it wasn't halfway through the barrel! Glad you're safe!

Thanks, all.

It was a commercial loading of .44 Special in FMJ. All new components & brass. Smaller / boutique loader with a reasonably good reputation, and this is a somewhat obscure product. I'll refrain from saying anything further for two reasons: a.) this could happen to anyone and b.) since it happened on the weekend, I have not had the opportunity to inform the manufacturer and get their opinion. I have a thousand rounds of this stuff, so although it was a completely random occurrence, it was disconcerting to have happen in the first four rounds.

Why does it look totally square? I've recovered bullets that weren't splattered and they kept the cone shape. Something different about this one?

Man, been there done that- sucks and good thing you (and your gun) weren't hurt. Mine was a 9mm keltec and i got multiple bullets jammed up in there before it blew the plastic bastard apart (damn semi-autos, LOL). Personally, I'd contact the manufacturer to replace and/or toss that ammo -if it's bad it's not worth the problems.

That is good form to contact the guy first. With that said I would not trust a single round in that batch. It could happen to anyone, but the fact that it did happen that quickly makes me think that there could be others in the lot.

Make is S&W. Looks like a Performance Center 629 Competitor (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_766128_-1_775655_757896_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y) with a 6" weighted barrel.

Nice shooter.

Was the first picture taken in a place beyond time and space, or heaven perhaps?

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Never fired one myself, but drooled on one a time or two. Great looking revolver and I'm betting is one hell of a tack-driver.

It's a Performance Center Competitor. Basically a dressed up 629. Lots of weight under the barrel, so it shoots pretty smooth.

@Irving #1: I used a 3/8 brass rod to drive it out. The amount of force it took flattened the nose of the bullet quite a bit. That sucker was lodged in there good.
@Irving #2: That's Manos, the hand of fate.

Maybe the hammer? I thought that too.

This reminds me why I only load my own or shoot factory ammo from one of the big names (Federal, Winchester, Remington, etc.). I'm in charge of quality control with my stuff and the big companies have big bank accounts should their product destroy any if my property.

Glad you are alive and well and that good looking wheel gun is still in one piece.

First - way to stay head's up. In a bottom feeder, a squib probably won't cycle the next round, and people are more likely to figure out what's going on. In a revolver, it's just another trigger pull to get a total disaster.

Not to cause undue concern, but if there's a squib in one, it's entirely possible that there's a double charge lurking somewhere in that batch of ammo. Depends on what press...

I'd add that generous lubing makes tapping the bullet out much easier.

Good catch. Plus that is a really nice revolver that I'm sure you wouldn't want damaged! And obviously you don't want to get injured yourself!
