View Full Version : Three Dog Night

I've heard the saying "three dog night" originated in various places long ago to describe cold nights where it would take three dogs in bed with you to keep warm. Not sure it's true but it sounds reasonable.

And tonight, it's cold...-8 and falling here in Bailey. My little dogs love to cuddle on nights like this. They get into bed and attach themselves to me like ticks. One of my Terriers, Lola, is quite possibly the best cuddling little dog in the world. She curls up right along my chest and lays there all night.

So, I'm curious... How many of you allow dogs in the bed? I'm sure the feelings on this are varied and range from extremes, like me with 4 dogs in bed, to that's likely the most disgusting thing in the world to sleep with an animal.

Haven't really seen this discussed here that I recall and a search brings up more dog threads than I can count.

So, dogs in bed or not.

Only dog in my bed is me! ;)

Never had a dog,but I did doggysit recently it was a pomapikachu. He'd cuddle up next to me for a bit on the bed then find his own digs.

My wife and I usualy work opposite shifts, so each of us typically sleep with two dogs and a cat. Sometimes I wish the dogs were small like yours...

I had to vote I would allow one to as I do not currently have any pets .....

but when I was married I was amazed how much space one skinny chick, one mid size dog ( Aussie cattle dog), and a cat could take leaving me so little of a king size bed .

The Cat would sleep at about my ankles on one side.. The Dog at about knee level on the other so not really between me and the ex but still there... I'd at times have to wake up and tell the dog to leave the cat alone as he would get grumpy when the dog wanted to play at 4 am and he wanted to sleep and start growling... for some reason a growling cat is an instant wake up for me.. tho I can sleep thru pretty much anything else LOL

I bought one of those temperpedic dog beds, so she is way happier sleeping in her bed leaving my bed all to me.

Site must be doing maintenance as it is slow as hell right now so I can't do a proper quote...

That is a brave little cat right there!

I'm sure the cat has shown both dog's who the boss is ...

And both dogs agreed to let the little ball of fur and nose poking needles to continue thinking he is boss.... too painful to disagree.

None of our three dogs in the bed but when it's this cold they don't dilly dally when I call them into the house.

One fifty pound blue heeler. He doesn't really like to cuddle but if you are laying where he wants to, he will try to lay on top of you or push you out of the way.

Absolutely not , not on chairs, couches, laps, beds. They're a first line alarm system, not bed warmers. However there are tell tale signs of covert incursions, on softer elevated areas when one is not home.

We used to let our 25lb Schipperke and 50lb Rhodesian Ridgeback sleep in our king size bed. But then my Ridgeback OD'd on Advil Liquigels, and is now incontinent. She'll go about a month without any accidents then bam, 3 days in a row of nothing but peeing on everything without realizing it. We don't let her sleep on any furniture now even though our bed has a waterproof cover underneath the sheets.

The Schipperke is my wife's heater (she's cold when its 78 in the house, and I'm hot when its 68, so we keep it at a fair 72, then 68 at night because when its 68 I don't toss/turn all night and therefore keep her awake). And, because he's a small dog, he doesn't take up room and is allowed on the bed.

Long story short, we share the bed with one dog.

The wife lets them on the bed while we are in there watching tv or reading, but when it is nighty night time, she kicks them out. They sleep on the leather couches instead.

My big dog, 105 pound Anatolian, will jump up and sleep on the bed if the wife is upstairs on the couch watching TV. She will also sleep on the bed if I got to bed first. Once the wife gets in bed, she is down to the couch or her dog bed.

The little dog (30 pounds) trades off sleeping on our boys bed, but if she can finagle it, she will sleep on our bed tucked up under my arm. I think she is part Terrier and part Viszla, but we don't know. We rescued her from a kill shelter in NM.

Thankfully, the wife is allergic to cats. :)

Yes, my last 3 dogs shared the bed. And now I have a cat. She was a Feral cat I took in after loosing my last dog. She doesn't take up much room.

Two dogs, two cats. The only reason there's any room for me, is that the Golden doesn't like to sleep on the bed, most of the time, and the terrier doesn't take up nearly as much space as he thinks he does.

What's the rule, "The only thing more affectionate than a Golden Retriever is a wet Golden Retriever?"

2 dogs, a west highland terrier and a scottish terrier. They both sleep on the king bed with the wife and I. The scotty will sometimes jump down if he over heats a little but last night, both of them were cuddled in tight.

My two dogs have pet doors into the backyard and are allowed anywhere in the house except my bedroom. They know not to even cross the threshold.

Two Italian Greyhounds. One is 15lbs and one is 19lbs and somehow they manage to take up more room than my wife and I. They're all legs and somehow those legs seem to lengthen at night.

Wife's small female cat comes and goes. Sometimes sleeps at our feet, sometime between us if she's feeling brave. She likes to cuddle when the mood strikes her.

I kick her off if I catch her licking her ass on my bed.

We had one I didn't care for much that always tried to sleep at our heads, but I flung her off enough times she finally got the hint. Said cat is now long gone. Good riddance.

Our 2 old GSPs jump in bed with the wife before I leave for work. Well, I guess they don't jump anymore, I have to place them on the bed for my wife. They're 13 & 15 years old.

Would I? Yes. Would the wife? No.... so the dog sleeps in his own bed, though he has been known to nap with me.

My pit is a cuddle bug. He used to sleep on his own bed till he figured out he could jump up on mine. It's a bit high. I'd kick him off when he first started doing it... But having a tempurpedic I never knew when he'd get on again.

I woke up this morning with his big head snoring and drooling next to mine.. I was apparently little spoon.

I voted no and that is generally the case. They are allowed in the tent when camping and are good snugglers. Not so nice in temperate weather but ok in the snow. A couple of months ago I was home with a cold and took an early morning nap. I konked right out. One of the dogs jumped up there with me. She's usually a good dog and knows she's not allowed but I she knew something was up.

No dogs in the bed. They have the run of the house, are allowed on the couch and back yard during the day. At night they get trapped in the living room and kitchen. They have their kennel that they go in as well as another foam bed there. We used to let them sleep in the bed room on weekends since they really like it under out bed, but one of them likes to wake up earlier than us and trots around huffing and yawning(they don't really bark, so that is how he makes noise) and bothers us until we get up to let him out. SO now he has to wait for us to get up downstairs.

Our 18lb. tuxedo cat has taken to climbing between the comforter and the sheet between the wife and I. It must be due to global warming.

The other night I kept having a dream that I was in a sword fight. I kept getting stabbed in the kidney area. When I woke up, the cat's back feet were pushing into my kidney area.

1 jack and 1 jack corgi sleeps in between my wife and I under her blanket. My jack corgi use to sleep under my blanket but after getting Dutch oven'd one too many times he now sleeps under my wife's blanket. It's funny as hell to fart on a dogs head and watch him get so pissed he growls and leaves the room [Coffee]

I married into a cat that slept in bed with my wife before she moved in. I let her know over 2 years in advance that the cat was not going to be sleeping with us when she moved in... I've stuck to my guns on it too. Not once. In fact he knows better than to try now, when I'm home. ;). He can get on the bed in our guest room or on the couch, but not our bed. It's MINE haha.

My greyhound hates being on furniture but he loves his dog beds. I think he doesn't like being elevated. Anyway, I answered "Don't have a dog but I would allow one to sleep with me." since I would let him if he wanted to jump up on the bed. My wife would probably not be OK with it though.

My heeler is same. LMAO. The wife gets mad and banishes us both to the spare bedroom or couch. Buddy gets really mad when she does and ignores me.

I dutch-ovened the cat at about 3:30am this morning. I was laughing my ass off when he quickly made tracks to get out from under the covers. [Coffee]

The wife didn't think it was that funny because the cat made those tracks over her. [panic]

King size bed fits two humans and one of our siberian huskies ok, and the other sibe usually sleeps in bed with the youngest kid. Though when the two kids go to their dad's we get two huskies and two humans in the same bed and real estate becomes a premium. Both big time snugglers though, and our younger one thinks he's a 52lb lap dog.

Usually one of these two configurations. Three dogs, two humans, warm nights. I usually try to the setters on the wifes side and the little dog snuggles between us. I don't sleep well with anything on my feet.
