So this morning after reading the thread about the "Pistol Shrimp", I got hungry for shrimp. I decided I would head out to get something to eat, get the car cleaned, and get gas. I have a membership at Waterway, so decided I would drive there, fill up, get the car washed and vacuumed. I have an annual membership, and get $.10 off a gal, and the wash for free.
Anyway, on with it.
As I leave the house in Castle Rock ( heading to Highlands Ranch), I look down, and see that I need gas. I figure I'll make it, and head on our way. Well as the title says, I ran out of gas about 1 mile from the Cabella's exit! I was supposed to meet my Mom, so I called and asked her to rescue the boy, and I. She said she needed about 30 mins. I wasn't going to sit there, so we started walking. I figured we could at least make it to the gas station.
Wind blowing, temp dropping, I didn't care , and figured it would be good for us to walk. We're walking with our head down trying to keep the snow, and wind out of our face. I look up for a sec, and what do you know! A guy in a truck is pulled over waiting for us, and starts backing up. We make a run for it, so he doesn't have to sit, and wait. We walk up, and he says we can jump in. Ask what happened, I tell him, and he starts laughing; tells me he had to save his daughter abut six times for the same thing! Even has a gas can in the back just for the purpose I can use. Good ol' boy from Misery; takes us to the gas station, and then back to the car! I thanked him I don't know how many times; he tells me were he is from they don't leave a man stranded.
So the question is; do you stop to help people out? I will, as often as I can, but maybe I need to do it more now. Anyone else ever run out of gas too; what did you do? Anyone help?
Edit: Guy was headed to Cabella's, and a gun nut as well! Talked about hunting, etc......
I stop to help whenever I see the need. I even pick up hitch hikers, though never with my family in the car.

I'll stop to help if first on scene or it looks like I'm needed.....I'll pick up hitchhikers too, as long as my kid isn't in the car. I might make exceptions on hitchhikers if my gut tells me to, but the usual ski bums you see around here have their gear so I don't feel like they are going to freeze to death or anything if I don't want them riding next to my kid lol.
When the situation permits, I stop and assist or at least ask if they need help, a call or a ride.
I don't think anyone here would not offer assistance if warranted.

I used to pick up hitchhikers back in the day; since I have the boy with me all the time, I never do anymore. A little more selective, now. The guy told me, he will even pull over, and help a lady with a tire change.

You ever think "man, I really don't want to have to kill someone in front of my kids" when you debate picking up hitchhikers? That's worst case scenario, but there are a lot of creeps out there and you can't always smell em out.

Thats a tough one. When we lived in a small town I stopped all the time. Now that we live in a high population area not so much. Too many people get taken advantage of and other bad things. The more people I am around the more I dislike and distrust people. If I actually see soemthing happen and they need help I will help.
I've been stranded a few times. blew a clutch in the middle of nowhere in 01. 15 minutes drive to a weight station or 30 minutes to the nearest town. Started hiking and got picked up within a mile by a trooper. The only other person that stopped was a trucker after I'd called family.
I help whenever possible, though I've only ever picked up 2 hitchhikers. Countless people out of gas, flats, broken hoses, etc. Towed some. Let some use the phone. fixed a few myself.
If I feel like I can help and am not late somewhere. I once saw a gray SUV with a flat tire, barely out of the lane in the HOV lane on a day like this. You almost couldn't see him. I pulled up behind, dropped a flare behind his vehicle, and took off.

That's cool!! He prob thought; "what the heck!??"
I ran out of gas once on the Pali highway. It's a steep grade and had to use the emergency truck ramp on my Buick just before a hair pin. Never again.
I stop and help when possible. Sometimes I've found just having someone there helps people.
I've picked up many a hitchhiker on Maui and the big island. Won't do it here.....unless she's cute!
OP - glad you and your kin are safe!

Thanks! It all worked out great...
I can't say I do it often. Gave a hs kid a ride home from nine mile one night it was cold. My mom and sister do it often which I told them they need to stop doing. I should stop more often that's for sure! Not surprising the guy was from Missouri, I am working out here and the people from here seem to have more common curtesy/respect.

Nope.
I spent too many years along these highways and have come upon some bizarre stuff.
Before the advent of cell phones and if I was at work maybe-we were obligated by policy to render aid. But we were also told to use our own discretion.
We had guys that had been robbed when they stopped to help and a couple others that pulled up on different situations that ended up in dicey spots.

ran out on the mc many a year ago on the way to cheyoming. Started sputtering, go flip to reserve [facepalm]not budging. OOPS i turned it to reserve Before taking off. Side of road between ft. fun & wellington. back then there was Nothing north of ft fun till you hit college in cheyenne. 2 kids stopped asked the usual, we'll take you for gas if you buy us beer. No problemo. Handed the wife my pistol and waited, for them to return.
It's rare we go anywhere without 1/2 tank or topping them off. Even rarer i put a mc on reserve before taking a putt.
I will only stop to help women and children. Grown ass men who run themselves out of gas are on their own.

I once had a '77 Beetle that I ran out of gas 2 or 3 times in because the gauge wasn't all that helpful. Then when I turbocharged my Integra, I switched the fuel pump to a race pump that didn't stick quite as far down into the tank, so I ran out of gas once with that. Then once more recently I ran out with my whole family in the car in the HOV lane of I-25. It was spring and the gas was switching and we were getting more miles per tank. I was trying to see just how much I could get. Turned out it was 403 miles. [facepalm]

That is my sentiment as well! Hence why I was shocked to see someone pulled over for us....

Well, you did have the kid with you. That probably didn't hurt your chances of getting help.

Nah, it was a Saturday afternoon fortunately. Why didn't you just wait in the truck for your mom?

I was in for the walk; wasn't looking for help. The boy on the other hand said he prayed for help, and low an behold.

I am inpatient, and I wanted to walk. That, and I have watched to many youtube videos of cars hitting parked cars on the side of the road. I ran out of gas back in 2000, sat on the side of the road, on top of the hill just south of the old rest stop on Monument pass, just south of CR. A couple cars collided, and just missed my vehicle. Figured i would walk, there was a grass area, away from the highway so we could walk far enough off the road.
Never ran out of gas... I'm yanking your man card next time!!
I stop for people 80% of the time. If they are young or have kids I definately help. When it's snowing out and I'm in my old POS truck I stop to laugh at them in their new RWD Benz.

You would have to out rank my Man card, in order to do that; you have a long way to go!! lol.... I might have to revoke yours for even saying such a thing! [Beer]
No, in my experience helping people out can quickly turn bad. Even the "cute ones".
My dad was helping his neighbor while she was in the garden, while he asked some kid with a brick in his hand walking up the alley looking into her yard. He asked them what they were doing... got him beat up. Good Samaritans get royally fucked all the time.
Glad it all worked out. I have stopped and helped people out, help them with a jump in a parking lot or something. Only if I have time and only if I am carrying and don't have my family with me. Just helped a guy jump his truck a couple weeks ago at king soopers.
more and more though I am starting to lose that feeling to want to help, my personal safety is more important and I want to be around to my my son grow up. People make a living off helping people stranded with cars, insurance helps, new cars come with it included etc. no point in me getting jumped or taken over a few gallons of gas or a flat tire or a bad battery.

Not having witnesses around is also bad.
People also make a living off Good Samaritans, be it robbery or bogus lawsuits.
About what time did that happen? Visibility was terrible when I went to work yesterday morning (Lincoln exit). Almost missed the offramp, I couldn't see enough to recognize it.

I've given people jumps if their battery is dead and have helped people push their cars to the side of the road/out of intersections/into gas stations before. Never alone though. Always had someone with me to back me up in case it was a set up.

It was prob around 11:15 Northbound. Visibility was clear, light snow..

Same experience and I am from California where people disappear often enough that it is a real concern. Last year I saw a guy broken down in an isolated area, no cell service. As soon as I could obtain cell service I called the State Patrol, about 45 mins later, then the dispatcher wanted to ream me for calling 911, what punks!!
