Is all this footage from Lakeside?
Didn't they have an indoor race track?
Is all this footage from Lakeside?
Lakeside Speedway in west Denver? Ha! Used to go there (and Englewood) all the time to watch the stock car and midget races on the oval track from the early sixties into the seventies. By then all the cars had roll bars and lap belts (unlike in the video), and probably shoulder harnesses.
Didn't they have an indoor race track?
There was indoor racing at the Denver Coliseum, I saw figure eight there.

Cool video
I can almost visualize that footage as something out of a Ben Hur chariot race.

My mother in law did Smash Derby a couple times at Lakeside - I think it was between the races entertainment. I'll have to ask her more details.

love the scenes where everyone just continues to crash on the same corner one after the other
Well before my time, but awesome nonetheless! I will send my dad, stepdad, and father in law this link. They'll get a kick out of it.
I did not see any footage that resembles Lakeside. Most of that is 1920s to 1950s footage, from all over. One sure looks like footage I saw elsewhere from Monaco and another from LeMans.
This one is not bad either:

This one still has an effect on me. I was working the end of the track that day.

I grew up 2 blocks south of Lakeside in Wheat Ridge, with the sounds of the engines every weekend. Strange the sounds you can picture in your head with absolute clarity 30 years later. I only went to the track a couple of times however sad that it closed due to a fatality I believe I will have to post a pic of what it looks like now.

Do you remember Len Seroka? http://teamseroka.com/about/ I only knew Len and his wife Anna for a few years, but they were great, as were their Irish Wolf Hounds. I spent as much time as I could listening and absorbing his passion for life and racing. I was on the starting line for his first pass to get his funny car license.

At Lakeside (https://modcoupes.com/CARC_History.php) it was called the Demolition Derby back when I was a kid. Most cars were smoking junkers on their last legs, some were veterans toughened up to batter the junkers.
The lady race drivers ran in the Powder Puff event. They were generally more timid drivers, but still it was fun. The trophy recipients got a kiss from one of the guys at the track.
A friend and neighbor, Dick Day (https://modcoupes.com/Past_Racers_of_the_CARC.html), ran a stock car #88 at Lakeside with his brother, Dan. That's Dick, standing on the left. Model A Ford's and '34 Crown Victoria coupes were popular. After the races the pits were opened to friends and spectators to check out the cars and chat with the drivers and mechanics.

It was VERY LOUD in the grandstands as none of the cars had mufflers. The roar at the start, and smell of the exhaust, of hot dogs, popcorn and beer.... it never leaves you.

The Lakeside Speedway still stands. It was a circular race track that was used through the 80s. After multiple deaths though it was closed for good.
Spent some of my youth at drag strips and dirt tracks.

Pook, I'd only been to Lakeside once or twice when I was a kid, spent a bunch more time down at Englewood cause my dads boss was a co-owner of a super modified, and dad was on the pit crew. Spent lots of summers, Sat and Sun there. That figure 8 class was crazy fun. Fond memories of those days for sure. Jerry Hocker was the driver, but in that class, Opperman was the shit. Fritz Wilson was the shit in the late models.. in the early 90's I had some help from Lucky Beikman and Don Wilson Sr. and Jr. help me build a super stock to run up at CNS. There's nothing like the feeling of being behind the wheel, on the track.
Once a driver, always a driver.... I really miss that aspect of it, but the insane costs of prep and being there every week....and fixing damage from some other assholes mistake during a race or blowing a motor, is just too much. Especially now a days.
That was fuckin' AWESOME!! Thanks for sharing!

Just watched that again! Wish I could restore all those wrecks!!
Had to look close in the first scene. Car #16 looked like the Scarab I am restoring now. But it wasn't.
