Trying to set up DSL at my house with a purchased modem and I can't get it set up? Any one here know the skinny? I have the modem synced to the system but can't get it to the right settings, I would call but my sprint phone has no service at my house.

Holy crap century link is not very helpful! When setting up the new modem it was asking for the PPP, I called century link finally from my wife's phone and they told me to cal the modem manufacturer, they told me to call c-link. So I called India back and it was like pulling teeth to get the info, since I bought my own modem they didn't want to help me. When we set this up the lady told me I should buy one so I didn't have to pay the $8 a month for a rental. Of course they don't even have an office up north to pick up a modem so it was either buy or wait for the mail. I can't get a cable modem here or I would have, 2 days of messing with it but I finally got it working and I'm getting a whopping 10mb download and .7mb upload speed but at least it works.

i was expecting slow speeds so I ran a phone line right to where the main tv is for my roku, and cat5 from the router to all the rooms, especially the reloading room!

10 MB down is way more than you need. Unless you stream a lot. Don't you love this world of high-tech, self service? Every man for himself.

What modem did you buy?

Open your browser- Internet Explorer, FireFox, et. and type in:

HTTP://192.168.0.1 (http://192.168.0.1/)

This will give you access to the modem configuration program.

I too have Century Link. My internet speed sucks huge elephant balls. They installed a damn junkie on a treadmill with a crack rock dangling on a string in front of him to power my modem. Damn stuff is so slow if it were any slower my browser would be going backwards in time. I called them and all they said was, "Sorry sir, you have the fastest available speed that is offered in your area." What the hell is that? The speed of snail? Okay, /end rant. Sorry.

FYI - I always use the Centurylink router when setting up their dsl. Always works and they support it if it's not working. Pay the $8 month for leasing the router too, it's their insurance policy - if it's zapped by lightning, they will replace it.

I've never had the store bought router work on DSL, they design it that way and don't want to support other peoples crap. No different than a car dealership not supporting your upgrades to a diesel engine etc.

Centurylink chugs goat cock. 18 months of pure hell and negative impact to my ability to work before I switched back. They can forever eat shit and die.

I bought the same modem they supply, it is crap though.

Century Links sucked major balls. It was my only provider at my old apartment. It was so slow i couldn't even play EVE or WoW.

Mine is working fine, getting what I pay for. I've had DSL for 15 years now, no real issues. A couple of outages, otherwise solid.

It really depends on the neighborhood and the wiring. I'm in an old hood that got all new wires and fiber many years back. Some newer areas of town they haven't upgraded anything yet, so it's crap.

Ditto.. My data plan is almost twice as fast as my DSL

I said NEED. Most people could easily get by with less than 10 Mb down. That speed test is friggen sweet. though I'm confused by the 5ms ping, is that even possible? Still nice throughput.

I beg to differ ;)

It better be possible for what we pay a month for it. Honestly, their business class stuff, with the exception of their NOC (most rude assholes I've ever met), isn't bad.

I've never had their home service but with the way they respond to tickets and such I open at work, I can't imagine how they treat a residential customer.

So what do you guys pay per month for the Century Link service?

I have home phone, the modem and wireless and cough up $100.79 a month. No cable tv.
I had major migranes getting this crap set up, surrendered and had to cal Geek Squad a couple times so my kid could have X-Box. I know nothing about all this crap but it seems to me I should be paying way less. Just curious where everyone else is at.

That's about what you would pay with Clink as well but you would have slower speeds. For just internet I will be paying $30 something, but I bought my own modem which saves $8 a month and I get about the speed of Comcast's "economy" tier service.

IF your modem is only training at 15Mb down ( or so) you should make them lower your price to reflect that speed rather then forking out for the 40 and not getting it . my modem trains at 50Mb but I pay for 40Mb.

Currently on introductory rate.
I probably need a better network card to utilize all the data.

Maybe or you just have a shit connection .....

go to your modems config page ( should be able to type http://192.168.0.1 (http://192.168.0.1/) on your web browser) and see what the modem is training ( connecting) at.

Too damn much for starters. But I pay 52.99/month and that's just for their subpar, moving at the speed of smell, crack-whore on a treadmill internet.

$123/month for phone and intarwebz, leased modem. Pretty sure I'm paying for 25Mbps - and getting much much more.

I'm WAY off introductory pricing and without a bundle including TV, it's not cheap. It is, however, worth it.

My dish bill with Everything package, 2 hoppers, 2 joeys, and a part time RV DVR is insanely expensive.
