View Full Version : Need a close camping spot ASAP
Well...my friends let me down on booking a camping spot at dillon this weekend so now I'm hustling to play catch up. Dillon/granby/carter/horsetooth etc etc. all are filled.
now I'm down to finding a spot off a forest service road. I have a 19' camper and they will have a tent. So something I can fit my camper, nothing bad for off road as my camper sits a little too low for anything too extreme.
my hunting area was my first thought but it is shut down for the summer so no access.
anybody have anything semi close not far off I-70 and not horribly far away?
i saw a few spots while riding today at Idaho springs but they were a bit too small.
if you want to keep it quiet and PM me, I promise to keep my lips sealed.

Lots of first come first serve spots up the Poudre Canyon but you will need to go early.

Tomahawk truck stop is pretty close.
But it seriously good luck. Everything I know is booked solid the rest of the summer. Jackson res, red feathers, etc etc.
There are places off Guanella Pass that would fit your bill. Last time we were up there I can picture a place that would be perfect. It was past all the real curvy sections, down the back side where it comes into a kinda valley. At the bottom is where I am thinking. It was all paved until the final turn off, which your camper should easily handle.
My wife and I just looked it up for ya. We think it was close to these coordinates. Really you can just drive the road, which was almost new and if you get to where it turns real bad... You went to far. We found several places that would fit what you are looking for.
The below is our best guess looking at satellite pics. There was a place were you came out on a high road over this valley that dropped quickly to the floor with easy switchbacks. You can see the pics show the nice roads and where we camped is pretty flat. There was a creek by the side so you could hear the water flowing. We had a great time. The middle pic is of the valley from the camp site.

We are heading up at about 10-11. Think that is early enough?

Any specific spots?
Id like to find 2-3 areas in case some are taken already

Got gps coordinates or anything like that? I'm not familiar with the area

Pretty much the reason I always go north to Wyoming.
Go north to Wyoming.
County road 80c near deadman and the red feather area always something available around there.
Come on up to West Magnolia and scare off all the drainbows.
Fraser has some nice places back in the woods. They looked to be accessible with a trailer. Is Robbers Roost, in Winter Park, open yet?

IIRC the same thing happened to you last year.

South Site. Then you can get some morning marksmanship in without even unzipping your bag ... ;-)
Updated original post.
Perfect thanks

Nah, I think I'll shoot some apit. 50bmg into tannerite and an old half full propane tank near a bunch of beetle kill!
I'm just kidding. Everyone calm down!

How far off the beaten path do you want to go? Theres a campground on HWY 119 north of Black Hawk with plenty of spots open. Well, there were earlier today anyway. Pretty close to the road though. Its near 119 & HWY 46 (Golden Gate Canyon). Good part is Golden Gate is right there. Not far from Rollinsville and the trails over there.
Rawlinsville. We tent camp there but I've seen some decent sized RVs there. As long as you don't mind hearing the trains going through Moffett Tunnel in the middle of the night.

Outside of Tabernash, there's national forest access that has space for trailers right off the access road. A nice stream and plenty of places to shoot in there.

If you have a decent rig, the access to the Pickle Gulch trail is right there, and you can camp in there, as well. Depending on what you drive, a budget boost or leveling kit might be enough to give you the necessary clearance and suspension travel to get in there. It's all national forest, so there are plenty of shooting opportunities too. And since you need a legitimate 4WD, you avoid the yuppies and granola campers.

Ill check there here as well. Today is just finding a spot once we get out of the house. Hopefully something good is available

You should be able to find something up the Poudre. If there is nothing you can always head up Laramie River Road then back down towards Red Feathers. Lots of spots on those roads too.

Close and just off I 70? Sounds like Chief Hosa is in your future. 15 minutes West of Golden. RV hookups. Decent sized camp grounds.

Can you post more info please? Our place in Tabernash USED to back up to national forest, but now that section is owned by the ski resort I guess.

Just before the bridge, you'll want to get off on 83 and head east until the road forks left or right. Go left (north) on 84 and follow that straight up until you hit the nat'l forest access. The first mile or so of the access road has pull-offs for trailer camping right next to the creek. If you keep going up, plenty of quad/bike trails sit up in the wilderness, going on for quite some time. A half hour ride up hadn't put us out of trail last year. And there are plenty of more secluded spots for tent campers up there, accessible by your standard SUV or truck fare. Pics included below.

Perfect, thank you.
Not a problem. I'm actually heading up into the deeper section tonight through Sunday. So if you hear a 5.56 cracking off, come say hello.

First come, first serve National Forest campground off Forest Service Rd. 211.
Beautiful area.

Thanks. Don't know when we'll have a chance to get up there anytime soon though.
Just got back and had an awesome time. Found a great spot on the backside of guanella pass. Camper did quite well but I think an axle flip would suit me better...and a diesel truck.
got some shooting in, lots of games, saw a moose right near camp, a really nice looking red fox, on the drive home saw 3 mountain goats right off the road. Only had a sprinkle of rain last night and it passed within an hour.
even saw some guys yank down a huge dead tree with their dodge diesel, then cut the log in half, then proceeded to drag it down the road with two of them riding the log. Wish I got a picture of that one!
i do know that I need a chainsaw....my free hatchet from RMEF took quite a while on some of the firewood we found. A large axe would have been nice, but chainsaw is the way to go.

Well, I made a new fire pit large enough for a pallet base, left some large fuel logs, and there's a survivor-style shelter minus the thatching at a turn off on Forest Road 128. If you find it, you'll be in the best spot up there.

Oooh, I have all that stuff. I should pick that up.

Took me a while to find 128 on the map. I think we're going to try and go hike around Meadow Creek Reservoir. Seems like quite a way up 129.

From the Highway 83 turnoff, that's spot's probably about 20 minutes away. It's not too bad.
Anyone ever been up to Meadow Creek Reservoir? The one review I read said it tended to get crowded, but I have a hard time believing that.

You'll pass the entrance for the reservoir on your way up to that spot I listed. Once they open the gates, it gets pretty crowded. Last year I stayed right at the mouth of the trails and when we were riding quads around, the satellite "lot" was so full people had just set up tents there.
Last time I was up there we had a fox so close you could pet it.
Might be the same guy that was in our camp! The moose was definitely the most impressive
We didn't see any animals except squirrels and birds.
