View Full Version : I knew fast food was Bad

One of the many reason's I don't eat fast food.
In the video below he illustrates how McDonald’s insists on using Russet Burbank Potatoes, a potato in America that is unusually long and difficult to grow. They further insist that their potatoes have no blemishes at all, which is hard because these potatoes commonly suffer from what is referred to as Net Necrosis, which causes unwanted spots and lines on the potatoes. If they have this, McDonald’s won’t buy them and the only way to eliminate this is through the use of a pesticide called methamidophos (Monitor) “that is so toxic that the farmers who grow these potatoes in Idaho won’t venture outside and into their fields for five days after they spray.” When McDonald’s is ready to harvest their potatoes, they have to put them in giant atmospheric controlled sheds the size of football stadiums because they are not edible for six weeks. “They have to off gas all the chemicals in them.”

It's 20 minutes long cause the Dude is an explanation-all kinda dude.

Cancer rates continue to rise, and study after study continues to surface every year showing how pesticides, GMOs and a number of other things we choose to surround ourselves with on a daily basis are indeed harmful to human health. It’s time for us to wake up and fully acknowledge it, it’s time to make better choices in our lives, it’s time to put two and two together and make connections. Fast foods chains are no different from drugs. They are extremely addicting and extremely harmful. They should not exist and this video just adds to the long, continually growing list of why.

If you're concerned about "poisons" entering your body, then maybe playing with a device that produces handheld explosions isn't in your best interest.

I'm certainly not going to argue that the food is good for you. But saying that a legal business that's been around for over 60 years "should not exist" or "should be banned" is a surefire way to guarantee I'll immediately lose interest in whatever you have to say. We're all grown ups and I don't need to be told by self-appointed nannies that I shouldn't do/eat/drink/smoke certain things. Reminds me of Bloomberg and banning sodas and salt. Leave me alone and let me make my own decisions.

Furthermore, fast food is "different from drugs". I don't think a McCheeseburger is going to cause a chemical dependency and it certainly has a very small risk of death with just one use like some drugs. That's a ridiculous thing to say for someone who's allegedly well educated. Just proves education doesn't equal intelligence.

Clicking on the link reveals this little tidbit of information about the video creator:
Michael Pollan is an author, activist, journalist and professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

That pretty much tells me all I need to know.

Can't remember the last time I ate in a Micky Ds.

Not disputing anything in the article. Getting ready to "try" and watch the vid. I'd be more concerned with what happens to the potatoes after they start processing them.

We must be saved from ourselves. [Shake]

I usually kill what we eat and grow alot of our veggies.
Pretty much all food is/has been genetically enhanced and has either lost it's nutritional value or carries shit you don't want.
Monsanto

We buy organic grass fed beef and pigs when we don't score enough wild stuff.

My daughter just got through cancer surgery so some of this makes ya think.

One of the many reasons why I don't eat fast foods and only eat organic! No I'm not a Prius driving liberal but I do care about what I eat and drink.

But each to their own and if you want to eat a McShite meal feel free.

My Mother in law died at 71, spent the last 5 years of her life in hospice, the only thing the woman ever ate was McD's and Golden Corral.
My FIL died just 1 year later.
Had a good friend that died at 54, ate nothing but fast food, Colon Cancer.

Grandmaw and grandpaw lived to rie old ages eating what they raised, bacon, Bacon, BACON.. grandmaw made it to late 90's, gramps late 80's cause he said wemen's live longer cause they sit down to pee.

I just don't get people who buy everything in organic. Some of those use different agricultural chemicals. Just different standard. Most of seeds are already modified.
If it was pure natural, corn will be 1/3 of size and have 75% fully grown.

I've seen some studies/journals on animal science. I was extremely surprised what they do to make it bigger.

Game meat and import seeds from those poor agricultural countries and self grow it. That would be probably near ideal.

Corn is for cars. LOL

Just had a flash:
If the gov can get people to move to the city(my other topic), make them live in 800Sq' apartments, make em eat only fast food, and fly chemtrails overhead then we can start controlling the libs.

-and therein likes the rub.

Adherents to organic food are an odd bunch to be sure, they tend not to want synthetic pesticides, industrial solvents, chemical fertilizers, or chemical food additives in the produce they buy. While they are strange in that regard, it's not polite to point & laugh at them.

That's not what I've heard about corn...at least how it's generally eaten by humans, on the cob. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=90#nutritionalprofile

Corn has also been a food that, in various forms, has provided nutrition to people all over the world who would've otherwise starved.

And if it weren't for pesticides and some chemicals used in the production of our food, we most likely wouldn't be able to feed our country, much less a good part of the world. Not saying they're good for you, just saying that's the way it is. Technological advances in food production have provided us a means to thrive as a country.

Eating "healthy" is fine. But anecdotal stories about people eating this or that and living/dying at a certain age mean nothing. Some of the "healthiest" people in the world have died at young ages while others who maintain a less than ideal diet and lifestyle have lived far longer than they probably should've.

I think like most things a little common sense in terms of a diet goes a long way.

Since we are kinda on the topic, anyone else over the calories on menus? Yeah I know that's bad for me. I knew it was bad for me when I walked in the door. I'll know its bad when I eat it, but it's damn tasty. I don't need your guilt trip trying to change my eating habits.

But tobacco, bacon and beer are necessary for a full and happy life. [Beer]

We're trying to eat more healthily. Business has been slow, so I've been busy hitting farmer's markets and then canning or dehydrating veggies and fruits...but we DO hit Smashburger at least once a week. (Their burgers are SO GOOD.) We've had to modify our diet to one of a diabetic, but it's actually been beneficial.

It's tough to keep up with all of the information on organic veggies, the Dirty Dozen and so on...organic produce is expensive! I planned on gardening this year, but I lost some plants to some sort of nibbler (and those %$#%#%@$@ aggressive thistle plants!) so I'm prepping the beds for later.

Eat whatever you want and die. Eat "healthy" and maybe live a few years longer. Or maybe eat healthy and die in a car crash at 31 years old. Enjoy your life and the choices you are able to make. Moderation and calculated risks give you a better chance to live a longer, healthier life.

… or not.

The problem with trying to eat "right" is that what is "right" has been politicized to the point of total obfuscation. Too many people with one opinion or another and all of them with "scientific" studies to back up their points.

For the original poster, the hot-button is genetically modified foods and pesticides. For another group, it's fats and cholesterol. For some, carbs are the culprit. For others, it's sweets. In the last 2 decades, eggs have been bad for you and then they've been good for you. Same thing with red meat. Same thing with carbs. Same thing for caffeine.

Hell, I've probably taken more years off my life WORRYING about all this crap than I have by eating it!

For every old-fart "healthy diet" person you can show me, I'm sure I can match you with a stubborn German, pot-bellied, lard-cooking, cigarette-smoking, borderline drunk in my family tree who's lived to be 80+ years old.

Who's joining me for a double-bacon cheeseburger with a large order of fries and a diet Coke at Wendy's tomorrow evening?

Among all fast foods, my worst is McDonald by far. Unfortunately, I go to McDonald and other fast food places which has a play area. My kid loves going to those places.
I am glad that McDonald has lots of choices. Coffee and 1.29 salad does the trick.
Foundtain drink is where it usually gets me. I love sodas, but most of places have those vitamin water and other good substitutes there. (those vitamin water is almost as crappy to health as some sodas).

Fast food vs Home made food. Aren't all those grocery food processed as well? Even some salads are processed and put it on vacuum bags. Yeah, quality is different and home made food may have less crap in it.

My view is just eat everything evenly. I buy groceries from Walmart, Costco, Sprout or even Trader Joe's when they are on sale. :)

:( so sad, I'm sorry to hear that.

There was a time when I was VERY picky about what I ate, as I got the short end of the stick on metabolism all my life, and it was the only way to get that six pack I was chasing after.

At this point in my life, I try to live a little when it comes to food. I still try to keep my intake of healthy foods high during the day, and limit fast food, but I don't monitor the nutrition facts on dinners with the wife. I still work out very hard, and even tho I have a bit extra around the mid section, I'm in very good shape, and feel great.

I can drive past a Wendy's or a Burger King. Arby's or Freddys or Steak and Shake. Right on by without a thought. Even Chick Fil A. But I freakin' love a McDonalds Filet O' Fish or double cheeseburger. I don't know why, but if it's fast food it's Mickey D's. I know I'm not alone here because the drive up lines tell the story. If I'm hungry and on the road I'm looking for the Golden Arches every time. Just pathetic. Damned McDonalds addiction.

I prefer to eat foods that will actually grow mold on them (proves they have something 'organic' in them, i.e.; real). Try growing mold on anything from McD's (or BK). In all tests I've done and seen, only Wendy's burgers will actually grow mold (of all the fast food chains)... In fact, the last test we did, the McDonald's quarter pounder and fries didn't even attract any bugs!! Perhaps God's bugs are smarter than we are? [Coffee]

Tonight's dinner is a Spring mix salad w/ little soba noodle in the salad. Dressing will be little bit of soy sauce+wasabe+chopped garlic+chopped ginger+vinegar.
My guess is 600-700k cal.

The Spring mix salad is purchased from Costco. I bought this about 5days ago, and still fairly fresh. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....... Usually Walmart salad goes bad within 1-1/2 day.

The myth of the McD's burger that doesn't mold has been debunked several times. It basically involves the amount of moisture left in the patty and bread after cooking and the fact they rapidly lose moisture and dry before mold spores can form. Pretty much any food will do the same if the moisture is removed.

Take the burger and put it in a plastic baggie and it will grow mold just like anything else.

Although it is kinda cool to look at a perfectly preserved 14 year old hamburger! [Coffee]

Sorry. I don't see the need to reinvent the wheel. I've seen the evidence from tests conducted by people a lot smarter than me. It's enough to convince me that a McD's burger will support mold.

I've never seen a moldy piece of toast (if left exposed to air), either, for the same reason. There's not enough moisture to support mold growth.

There are studies that show organic farm raised food is no healthier than a farm that isn't USDA Rated organic. With that said, only 10% of the crop or livestock need to be raised or grown organically to get the approval to use the Organic label in a grocery store. So spend a bit more for the organic and receive no real benefit. YMMV
