View Full Version : "Millennials' Political Views Don't Make Any Sense"

Well color me shocked.
I used try and make it a point to ask for intellectual honesty when I was discussing difficult social issues with people. I've slowly realized that most people are simply incapable of it. They just don't see the contradictions in the positions they *feel* are right. (Using the state of the environment in China as evidence that we need government intervention to keep the environment clean or decrying terrorist tactics in one breath and defending the IRA in the next... freaking ridiculous.)

Yeah...sounds about right judging from most of the younger people I've had the "pleasure" of talking with.
I get offended when people call me a "Millennial"- just because of my age. I do not think like these people, I do not associate with them, and more over, I am not an idiot like the ones surveyed in that article. This is the future of our country, and it is very frightening.
ZERO THEORY

I'll echo this sentiment. If I'm being completely honest, my generation just plain sucks. My only comfort is in knowing that I don't associate with these degenerates. They've all got five different social media accounts that they're glued to 18 hours a day, but can't spend five minutes reading a book (no exaggeration).
If you really want to feel hopeless about the future, ask someone under the age of 26 what the last political event they took part in was, or ask them what they know about 20th century history. Anything that happened more than a year ago and wasn't on MTV "doesn't matter".

And to think all these idiots in that video probably graduated high school and are enrolled in a college. The shit show that is the millennial generation is a direct representation of our public school system, who's running it, and how they are running it. It's no longer a matter of incompetence, it is deliberate. IMHO I believe they are deliberately dumbing down the population.

X2. I'm 22 and immediately get thrown in that category as "the generation that's destroying America" but like you said, I don't think like them, don't associate with them, etc. My dad is an ex Marine so I grew up with him raising me right and beating my ass when I got out of line. I can't tell you how many times I would go to a friends house in high school and these kids would cuss out their parents and all they would do is say "Hey, watch your language." And that's it....That's why all my friends are either late 20's or early 30's. I can't stand anyone around my age...

Our daughter is 31. She calls and says, DAD there's some protesters stepping on the flag, i'm going over and kick their ass. She like other youngsters here is not cut from the same FSA cloth.

I guess I'm a millenial too, and indeed much of my generation is dumb. Though I'll point out it extends well beyond our generation; we're just the latest in a long line of dumb.
Can't find the clip (think NBC has it locked up), but there was one with Jay Leno asking people basic (and I mean very basic) questions off the immigration test. People getting it totally wrong. At the end, you have some teens get it wrong, then they ask their parents, they get it wrong. Only when he goes to grandpa, who was an immigrant himself, does he get the exact answer spot-on instantly.
I'm still of the mind that you should have to pass a basic citizenship test in order to vote, renewed every 5-10 years or so.

I think the author mean to name that article "All young people are stupid and should be treated like children, and I hate all of them".
Are there a bunch of young people who are stupid? Absolutely. But you know what else? There's a shitload of older people that are just as stupid, if not more so. I think it's worse to be older and stupid, because in theory you should know more about how the world works at an older age.
Also, you guys talking about how stupid "millenials" are and how they are the future and we are in trouble...you're assuming that all of us "millenials" are going to stay stupid. Well let me ask you this...remember when you were young? I would be willing to bet that you would refer to your younger self as "dumb", correct? How easy it is to forget that smart people can do some dumb things, but they can learn from them.
And just an aside here...the derogatory generalization of a whole group of people, as well as the way that group of people thinks, is something that people on this forum get pretty up in arms about when it comes to gun owners. "A few bad apples don't spoil the bunch" you say. Well be consistent I would ask...don't automatically assume people are (insert adjective here) because they are a part of a certain group of people.
OT of the article though...I think younger people have different political views than older generations because alot of us are fed up with the choice between a "shit sandwich and a giant douche" (South Park reference...damn those millenials and their cartoons...). I think it's fantastic that younger people's political views are all over the board. Uninformed opinions are never helpful...and like I said earlier I would imagine there were just as many older people who judged our Great and Powerful Leader by the color of his skin instead of by the content of his character. But I think that the spread of political views across this demographic is going to be a good thing in the long run. Honestly if you older generations don't like it...it won't matter because you'll be dead and gone by the time we get to be your age.

This pretty much summed the article up for me, "Forty-two percent of Millennials think socialism is preferable to capitalism, but only 16 percent of Millennials could accurately define socialism in the survey."

I have to agree with this. This forum is rather laughable sometimes with the generalizations so long as they don't apply to the posters therein.
Carry on.
"If you are young and not liberal, then you have no heart; but if you are old and not conservative, then you have no brain,"
The first part is a lie, the second part is true because it means the person hasn't learned one damn thing from their life experience.
I've never been liberal but I was much more altruistic when I was younger. Now that I'm older I've learned that when I give people things they think they're entitled to my generosity.

I agree. Ive never thought about being a liberal in all my life. It's a gross generalization and we know how we feel about those. However, I think it does hit on why more young people vote democrat. The left pulls on the heart strings, by design. Obama's assault on college campus's to get them to vote was genius.

Absolutely correct.
The left is all about emotion and irrational thought, right up to the point where they starve the useless idiots to death....after they've murdered the people like us for being enemies of the state.

Yes they are.
This is why the education curriculum should not be nationalized. A national school system is an asset only to the 'crats, it isn't good for students or teachers.

We need to stop being offended by generalizations. It's making the population suck.

I didn't serve. I guess you hate me. And by the way...your math is pretty re-goddamn-diculously awful...nowhere near half of our generation went into the military. I hope your job in the military doesn't involve math.
Can I just say this is possibly one of the dumbest opinions I've read in a long time...what an asinine thing for someone to say.

I would be more sanguine if I encountered more young people who seemed willing and interested in learning. I knew about the three branches of government including the bicameral legislature, why the Founding Fathers fought the Revolutionary War, specifics of their grievances, how the Constitution was structured, etc. by fifth grade. I constantly run into high school juniors and seniors and college kids who haven't got the foggiest clue about any of that, aren't embarrassed by their ignorance, and have no intention of correcting their ignorance but are intent on "making government work for the people".
I have no problem with political views being all over the place but I think younger people have inconsistent political views because a lot of you grew up uninformed and uninspired and miseducated by a school system run by the NEA and Democratic Party proxies.
Honestly if you older generations don't like it...it won't matter because you'll be dead and gone by the time we get to be your age.
Prime example of the ignorant obnoxious garbage that prompts the very generalizations that you dislike.

I'll give you obnoxious, but ignorant? You use that word...in the words of the great Inigo Montoya..."I don't think it means what you think it means".

Millennials Don’t Know What "Socialism" Means (http://reason.com/blog/2014/07/16/millennials-dont-know-what-socialism-me2)

Recent polls have suggested (http://www.people-press.org/2010/05/04/socialism-not-so-negative-capitalism-not-so-positive/) that millennials are far more positive to socialism than older cohorts. For instance, the Pew Research Center found (http://www.people-press.org/2010/05/04/socialism-not-so-negative-capitalism-not-so-positive/) that 43 percent of 18-29 year olds had a positive reaction to the word socialism, compared to 33 percent of 30-49 year olds, 23 percent of 50-64 year olds, and 14% of 65+. The older you get the more you hate socialism.

I'm actually within that age group- so no, I'm not an old fogey (or whatever), I actually did use that moniker in stating that we are in trouble. I'm not generalizing, or even painting my generation with broad strokes, I'm using reason and logic based on my personal experience (ya know, growing up and living among those my age) and I have deduced that a very large (and very vocal and politically active) number of folks in the "millennial" age group are two shades away from either insanely stupid, or maniacally evil- not in the Disney villain evil, more in the Stalin or Mao type socialist and intolerant evil. Many of these younger generation (that by most definitions ranges from 21 to 32 or so) are the very same that helped to get Obama elected, twice, and began the bewildering and completely unguided "Occupy" movement. In fact, along side that article, the Occupy movement explains many (again, not all, probably not most, but a big number of) millennials perfectly- "why are you here? What are you protesting?" "Man, we're here because well, ya know, man, shit! We're pissed off at something!"
I would be more sanguine if I encountered more young people who seemed willing and interested in learning. I knew about the three branches of government including the bicameral legislature, why the Founding Fathers fought the Revolutionary War, specifics of their grievances, how the Constitution was structured, etc. by fifth grade. THIS! I'm kinda frightened that so many that aren't completely ashamed to be so goddamned clueless about almost everything. Talk to many college kids about big issues, be it taxes, immigration, welfare or even oil production and they make your head spin with how many CNN talking points they quote, but cite almost nothing based on actual fact.

Millennial: Don't wear a t-shirt with a weed plant on it, say "man" or talk like a dipshit. Congratulations. Not treated like a millennial. Probably respected.
Gay: Don't force a lisp and wear a massive rainbow costume. Congratulations. Not treated like a gay. Probably respected.
Black: Suit and tie, clean cut, no ebonics. Congratulations, nobody subconsciously thinks of you as " ". Probably respected.
Etc., we can go on and on.
.... break out of your category and make something for yourself and people wont psychologically generalize you with the larger group.
We can make speech politically correct all we want and sanitize writings like this, but it will never stop the human mind from recognizing patterns and applying generalized assumptions to strangers around them.
^THIS....

Now that I can agree with you on...one of my biggest pet peeves is people being inconsistent in their beliefs. It shows a lack of critical thinking (and a lack of thought in general).
I see this all the time, and it bugs the shit out of me....no desire whatsoever to really learn something, at most just rote memorization of itema needed to pass exam/earn degree, along with an arrogance that they are the fountain of knowlwdge amd wisdom....this is almost always paired with a complete lack of ability for critical thinking or abstract thought, without which any knowledge they do have is useless as they have no mechanism to manage context and application of said knowledge.......ignorance can be fixed, stupid not so much (and stupid comes in many flavors)....
Also, in my experience, beyond a certain point age is largely irrelevant regarding cognitive ability and communication/presentation skills.....

Living in 135 square feet would be okay. At least, if that 135-square-foot crapshack was in the middle of a few hundred acres with signs saying "Centrarchidae's Private Hunting Preserve." I could dig that.
But people who live in parking spaces have a special name. We call them "homeless."
