View Full Version : Does such a thing exist? Need job help...
So I don't want to do another Ronin's diary, but I need to know if I'm searching for something that doesn't exist... So back in December I graduated from the Red Rocks LE Academy, and thanks to my restraint and the GI Bill I managed to save up enough money while attending the academy to live off of (combined with VA disability) while I dedicated my time to getting hired. Well it's been 7 months and that money is wearing thin and, despite coming close a few times, I'm still not sworn, on the street, earning a paycheck. I'm constantly applying for just about any agency within 2 hours of Denver since I'm moving in with the GF once hired.
My issue: I need more income than my VA monthly nets me, plus that whole new truck now that my car is starting to get to the point of unafordability if I wanna keep it on the road (100K + now). So I need a job that will pay the bills, but still give me the flexibility to test and interview with LE agencies, but won't screw me over on account of me being there until I get hired with a PD or SO. Basically, a night job or flexible schedule job. Does such a thing exist? Or do I need to contact metro taxi to see if they're hiring? I looked into working for Argus, the concert security company that works Red Rocks, Filmore, Bluebird, etc., but I'm concerned I won't get the hours or salary needed. And yes, I even entertained the idea of selling the Beemer for a cheaper junker car until I can afford the new truck. Any ideas? Help? Leads?
Thanks fellas (and the few ladies we have).

Honestly...waiting tables is the best, easiest and fastest way to make some cash (if you don't mind dealing with the public). People are always looking to switch shifts so the flexibility is there, and if you get in with the right place then you can make some pretty fat cash working minimal hours. I made close to $400 a night working 4-11 on a Saturday night working the bar and a couple of tables on a Saturday night in a burger joint in the DU area. Not the most fun job, and people are assholes for sure...but it's easy cash.

Night cashier/janitor at Pleasures?
You could dick around at work all night......
Seriously, you may try UPS. A few of my kids friends worked swing/nights and set aside some decent cash loading/unloading trucks.

Temp agencies. Day labor. I know a few guys who got hired by companies while working day labor jobs. And it's pretty flexible.
PM sent.

Guys standing on the median with a guitar make a decent living and because they are their own boss, no set hours.
seriously though, waiting tables is a good way to make quick cash.
RTD is hiring drivers. They start classes every two weeks. Part time or full time. Almost every school district is hiring bus drivers. Hours in the morning and afternoon. Leaves plenty of time for another part time job during the day.

UPS is always hiring. I know that means the dreadful "U" word but most shifts are at night or early morning. PM me and I can get you more info based on your location.

Pole dancing ?
Have you tried weld county sheriff? Heard they were short help.
School districts are always looking for drivers and provide the training to get you a commercial DL. Most jobs come include benefits and are on split shifts so you can interview for LE Jobs. Pay is about. 12 an hour. Will give you experience in dealing with snotty punks. Good luck

Larimer County is almost always looking for deputies. Might have to start off working in the jail though.

Yep, I literally waited tables until recently (I got on with a police academy for a department). Waiting tables is how I supported my wife and myself for the last two years!

Every electrical contractor I know (at lot) needs more labor. It's a day job but it will pay the bills. Construction market is booming in Denver. I'm sure you could get a gig doing just about any trade instantly.

I guess it depends on the extent of your disability, and no I'm not asking what it is, it's none of my business, but depending on it's nature it may or may not preclude certain jobs. But essentially, there's a ton of great suggestions already put up here.
UPS is a great one and speaking from my brother's experience, it's kind of a strange coincidence it's been mentioned here in this context. He was working for UPS in the early mornings putting himself through school to be a LEO, they offered him a full time job and he's been doing it now for 20 years. The pay is great, benefits are good, the management culture there sucks from what I've seen but it's bearable.
If you're physically fit, and you're open to the idea of waiting a long while for what is quite possibly the easiest LEO job on the planet, my company has it's own police force. If you hire into a craft, and transfer later to a special agent position, you've got a better shot at one of them as they are highly sought after jobs. Also we pay really well and the benefits are good. Just depends on what you want. You can PM me if you're interested and I can give you some more info, we're hiring tons of people constantly and we are having a hard time filling jobs.

HSS - Hospital Shared Services may be an option. Security at most hospitals, DIA, etc. Pretty sure most are unarmed but it is an option. Good luck regardless.
I've delivered pizza, and it is okay. Waiting tables or bartending is even better. Probably even better than that is being a valet. I've known a couple guys who were valets and they were able to sustain themselves on only two nights a week. $400 a night and not having to smell like food or drive your own vehicle, and having to run all night and stay in shape, sounds like a good gig to me.
Hit up a casino and you can probably get crazy night hours as well. You're half way up there anyway.
Thanks for the ideas guys. Isn't UPS's facility in combat city? I've been there a few times. It's actually not a bad hop from my GF's place. I've done food service/bartending before, but that was 11 years ago, I'd hope I'm not too rusty. Irving, the idea of valet never occurred to me, holy crap! That's not a bad idea.

Yup, we keep firing them where I'm at. They'll need replacements. Depending on the location, it can be a pain in the ass but also very entertaining. Nothing seriously difficult, just dealing with a-holes. Empty your pockets, take off your belt, no cell phones. Is that a bottle of perfume in your bag maam? You'll have to dispose of that before coming in. @$%&@$%!(&*

Just kidding, hope you find something that works for you. When I was getting the shop off the ground, I worked graves at Kmart stocking shelves in the hardware/auto depts. The work sucked, but it paid the bills.

No, I can't... Collecting VA Disability, I'd have to forfeit that and the other benefits that affords, and that is not a very sound financial decision.
UPDATE: Got a job today, working with Argus Events (the security you see at Broncos games, Red Rocks, Filmore, etc.). Honestly, that was the easiest job attempt ever, I just walked in and pretty much got the job. Not sure if I'll need to get another job if this doesn't provide enough pay or hours, but everyone I've talked to that's worked for them in the past said they're a good company to work for in the meantime while I've got applications out with LE agencies.
Thanks for that! I'll apply.

Now where have I heard this before?
This one almost had me fall over:
Three guys walk into a restaurant .....
A Republican, in a wheelchair, entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The Republican looked across the restaurant and asked,"Is that Jesus sitting over there?"
The waitress nodded "yes!" So, the Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.
The next patron to come in was a Libertarian, with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus, over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, "My treat."
The third patron, to come into the restaurant, was a Democrat on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered, "Hey there honey! How's about getting me a cold mug of Miller Light!" He, too, looked across the restaurant and asked, "Isn't that God's boy over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. "On my bill," he said loudly so everyone in the restaurant could hear.
As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Republican felt the strength come back into his legs, got up and began to praise the Lord.
Jesus passed by the Libertarian, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Libertarian felt his back straightening up, he raised his hands and he, too, began to praise the Lord.
Then, Jesus walked, with a huge smile on his face, towards the Democrat. The Democrat jumped up and yelled, "Don't touch me....... I'm on disability."

Pffft....I almost lost my whiskey all over my computer!!! Best post I've seen here in a long time. I bet it sucks to be called out for saying one thing and then doing the opposite, doesn't it?
Not trying to be mean, but that jumped out at me pretty hard.
I would make a comment but it would be deleted yet again...

Keeping my eye on this thread... getting my freedom back this week!
How many agencies have you applied with and how far into the testing process have you made it?
A guy I work with worked graveyard parts for us and just got on with central city pd he was only out of academy a month or so did you apply up there?
I am working security gig about 14-16hr/week on weeknights. I took the job , because it only requires only 2-3hr of walk (20-30min walk per round), and it is giving me all the exercise I need with all the heavy belt (extra weight) on it.
I can add or subtract hours based on my physical condition. (Recovering from severe Arthritis I suffered for 16mo).
My physician approved it too, and he said I am losing about 4lbs avg per visit. I need to lose about 40-50lbs just get back to where I was before suffering from arthritis.
It sure beats joining the gym! :)
Here are my thoughts. Part time:
-Pizza delivery. College towns are better. Lower tip, but higher volume.
-Securityguard. Easy sit down type. Do not go for ones $16.50+, they work you to death.
-Janitors. However, need to work on a good contract ones. SOme are extremely difficult.
-Work at retail part time. - Working at Dick's 2007-2009 part time was awesome. I learned a lot about golf equipment and custom fitting. I think I worked all depts, except casher. I was basically floater.
How many agencies have you applied with and how far into the testing process have you made it?
About 10 thus far, and the furthest I've made it was the final 3 for one department, and was rejected at the very end. So I know I can make it, just have to keep trying.
UPDATE: I got a job working for Argus Event Staffing at various venues around town, to include Broncos games, Rockies games, Red Rocks, 1st Bank Center and more! The pay is less than ideal, but it's money and seems to be a fun workplace. Getting my Merchant Guard License tomorrow and should start with roaming security at the preseason opener against Seattle.
If you have any GI Bill remaining, just go back and take an Underwater Basket Weaving course for the housing pay.

For the UPS warehouse gig, about how much time do you have to work there where you could quit without it being a waste of their time to have hired/trained you? Basically, going to school next year and need a filler job that won't be peeved I intentionally hired on to only work 6-12mos

I was in the same boat Ronin. I have been applying for about a year and a half for LEO, and had to switch jobs to better provide for my wife and daughter. Thankfully where I am at right now, it is providing enough and I have flexibility to interview and test with LEO departments.

It's looking like this job with Argus is going to be able to give me a ton of flexibility to apply and test with various agencies. I get to pick my own schedule and what days I'm working.
