View Full Version : Question for you girly-man types

So, I've been trying understand how any man can get through life without owning a pick up truck. I probably got my first truck when I was twenty and have had one ever since.

One of my coworkers doesn't own a truck and I just don't get it. Carpentry is his biggest hobby and he will strap lumber to the roof of his mini van. He recently bought a new table saw and had it delivered.

Don't misunderstand me. It's not like I haul stuff in my truck or tow things very often. But when I need to or want to I can do it on a moments notice.

I saw a couple of metrosexual looking college aged guys at Lowe's recently who bought themselves a new grill. They took it out of the box and had parts and pieces stuffed everywhere they could get them in their Toyota Corolla. They were trying to figure out how the second guy was going to get home since he could no longer fit in the car with all of the grill parts and pieces in there. I just laughed, got in my truck, and left.

So, for those of you who don't own a truck, how do you guys do it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

No truck here. Well, I have an Xterra and thats built on a truck bed, does that count?

I own guns and avoid buying CCW purses.

Besides, the only time I've never actually needed a truck was years ago when I bought a motorcycle in Ft Collins and had to pick it up.

Giving benefit of the doubt - if they've never owned a truck they probably just don't know any better. My first truck was a '65 Chevy stepside (it wasn't that old at the time), man I miss that truck.

My first car at 17 was a 3/4 ton GMC. I've only been without a truck at one point of my life for a couple of years and I hated it. If you can only afford one vehicle and a truck does not fit you general needs then I get it. At this point in my life I will always have a truck, a car, and a motorcycle. That is manditory for me.

A few weeks ago, while loading up at Depot, a guy walks out with a cart. On it some 4×8 sheets of ply and some 16' framing lumber. He looks at his cart and looks at his mini van. Scratches head. Looks at his cart and looks at his mini van. Offered me $30 to drop it off at his house a mile away. He needed to go in and buy something to get extra cash back to pay me. It was Flag day and needed a new one so made a deal to trade delivery for a flag. He then proceeded to complain the flag cost nearly $30.

Mini Vans,,, can't stand em.

Then there are guys who buy trucks and don't know how to use em.
Was a Lowe's recently and a guy with a F150 had em load a complete bunk of 5/8 plywood in the back, we laughed as he drove off bottom out and dragging.

My pickup has been pretty much out of commission for over 2 years now. We did have a minivan for a bit during that time, and I moved plenty of 4x8 sheets of plywood and lumber in the back of that thing, but I would've preferred the truck.

Since then, I've gotten by showing up to Lowes in our VW Touareg with an 16' flatbed trailer to haul lumber. It's a bit harder to get around with the trailer and the dovetail on the end of it has really poor clearance when I back into my back yard. I want my truck back.

Once, at the rental car desk, they tried to give me a MiniVan...I refused it. Never driven one, never plan to.

My Wife and I both drive trucks. Hers is nicer, but we use them. Trash, dogs, baseball gear, lumber, rocks, luggage, guns, dead animals, targets...all go better in a truck bed. Our lifestyle and hobbies consist of many elements that require a truck. I guess if you are not into shooting, sports, DIY, hunting...might not need a truck. I won't go so far as to call someone a name because their lifestyle does not make a truck a mandatory accessory, but I could not live such a life myself. America is still free, even if under attack from within. :)

Oh, and I do have a McDonalds Corvette as the "fun" car.

It didn't run, so I bought it for $250. Got it home, cleaned up the carbs installed new tires and sold it a few months later for $2k fully operational and tuned up.

From back east, we used van's. No One leaves shit anywhere one has eyes on it. Purchased a pick em up to move out here with. Pick ups, 4WD's, pull behind trailers for extra work load.

Plowing snow, firewood and hauling the camper. My trucks get used. Even if I didn't use them like trucks I'd still drive a truck...just because I like them. Yeah, I wish my 3/4 ton diesel got 35 mpg, could do 0 - 60 in 3.5 seconds and hold a "g" on the skidpad, but it doesn't. I don't care. I'm willing to make the tradeoff because a truck is what I want to drive and when I need to haul 3,000 pounds of firewood across the side of a muddy or snowy hill, or attach the 7.5' plow that weighs almost 1000 pounds and will push 2' of snow, I can do those things. And that's good enough. And it's also good enough that other people don't want or need a truck. Leaves more for the rest of us!

I owned jeeps exclusively for the first 5 (?) cars of my life. Then I got a 3/4 ton cummins, which I later traded for a 1 ton.
It would be hard to go without. I was shocked my dad didn't have one all the years I was growing up since he does carpentry for a hobby. He did small imports, a minivan, an explorer, some jeeps. Now he has a 3/4 cummins himself, I think pushing 200k.

That said, I bought the first automobile of my life recently and not having to put a 1 ton pickup in downtown Denver (or Aurora) parking has been really nice.

seriously. Mine's an Impreza Outback Sport (wagon) and hers is a Forester. For us at this point, they make sense. We never had a problem in the snow, and with the baby that was key. We can haul quite a bit of stuff in the Forester, and my wagon has quite a bit of room too. Can I haul a million pounds of lumber? No, but thankfully our needs right now don't dictate the need for a truck. I had a Tacoma several years ago and man I loved that thing. I miss it sometimes. But my Suby gets nearly 30 mpg and can handle almost everything I throw at it.

Trucks are like garages, where if you don't have one, you don't need one. When I didn't have a truck or garage, I never took on stuff that needed a truck or a garage. I had a truck once, and it was great, but I only had it the months before totaling it, then getting a baby. Now I have a garage and feel like I need a truck again. My Amigo is smaller than most cars I've owned as far as interior space. When I bought a gas range for our house, I had to take it out of the box in the parking lot like in the OP's story with the grill.

EDIT: I have zero issue driving a minivan. I tried to convince my wife to but one but she wouldn't.

Toyota Sienna has an AWD option. My buddies wife drives one and it is our skiing mobile. Put some Blizzakks on it and it grips great. Plus has big screen TV that is pretty sweet for road trips. We have a Yukon and an Ecoboost F150. We still take my buddies minivan.

Never had a problem getting around in my car. Whenever I've needed a truck, it's been more of a Uhaul type deal. Renting one if I need one seems like a much better deal than the extra cost associated with having one as a daily driver. Don't think I'll ever own one unless I live out of town or something along those lines.

I always drove an old truck until 2009 when I got a job working off-shore in 2009 and needed something reliable with better gas mileage for my weekly 5 hour commute, and ended up with a 2008 WRX. I don't really miss the truck and just rent a u haul the once every couple years I just can't do without. I do have a old bronco 4x4 that I use for hunting/finshing/off road use once in a blue moon, but with the seats down and the roof rack on the Subaru I can carry just about anything I need to outside of furniture or a large load of lumber.

It also aggravates the shit out of me that I can't buy a half ton truck with a manual transmission anymore. Think the newest one I've ever found was a 97 F-150 I owned for a while. It didn't even have a steering wheel tilt, much less power locks/windows etc. The new trucks all seem to be these leather heated seats, power everything, 4 door, why not just buy a Cadillac monstrosities. Seriously if you are going to drop $40K on a new truck with all the extra bullshit why not just buy a caddy and have a super comfortable ride.

If I could go down to the lot and get a regular cab truck with a bench seat, a 5-speed and roll up windows, that didn't cost half of my mortgage I might own one again. They're supposed to be for work not a luxury vehicle.

My Tacoma has a 6 speed manual. But we'll leave that conversation alone for now. :D

Didn't know this thread would take off like it did. Oh, and I didn't mean to belittle anyone who doesn't own a truck. Regardless of how I worded the title.

It just seems like every time I turn around I am using my truck for something. Hauling lumber for fence repairs, buying new appliances or furniture, etc. Even if I only used my truck for truck type stuff five or six times a year it just seems it would be more convenient to own one than to rent or borrow something.

I definitely understand they could be a bit expensive to operate as a daily commuter. I suppose if I only had one vehicle and had to drive it every day a truck might not make much sense I guess. Fortunately, my truck only gets driven maybe four or five thousand miles a year.

What I have. Diesel that gets 18 in town as well. I will say since the camper is gone I may sell the "TEOTWAWKI" hauler (12v). Most everything I would need one for can be met with a trailer hooked to the back of something. Almost always had a truck but I did go through my "wagon" phase. Since I did grow up with an El Camino and since these are a local product something like this may work. [Flower]47701

I'm sorry to read that Ray1970 can't get it up unless he owns a big truck. There are meds to help with that condition these days.

I happen to own an F150 for hauling shit around, but I haven't had it very long. Before that, (after a big gap) it was a 4cyl "Ford Ranger" which is like a "Ford Fiesta" with a pickup bed instead of a back seat.

You have to be careful before tying your manhood to just having something with a bed in the back... Hell VW made a sort-of pickup at one time, too.

Personally never owned a pick up truck. I've never even owned SUV's either.
It has been sedan, coupe.

I had a company vehicle Ford F150 truck which I was allowed to use as a personal vehicle as a package deal. It was real nice. I didn't need Uhaul or any rental truck for hauling.

I don't own a truck. I have before, just because it had wheels and went down the road. I understand that trucks are very practical, and for some necessary. I look at it this way. If I need a truck to haul it, I don't need it. Aside from moving, which often requires a very large truck, i.e. u-haul, there is no need to move a very large object.

Guns fit in pockets or waistbands. Beer fits in a backpack. Women fit on the back of motorcycles. So what the hell do I need a truck for? The shit you own ends up owning you. If you NEED a truck, then detach yourself from whatever it is you NEED that requires a truck to move. Good things come in small packages. I've never had to put my motorcycle on a truck, as I've never owned a harley (had to get that in somewhere). Maintenance and repairs can be done at home, parts for bikes are small.

Some of us live our lives "light and tight".

A truck for me would be a secondary vehicle I would be using mostly for towing which at this point in my life I can't afford it. I rather putt around town in a beater than have a nice truck to drive daily, so I can put more money towards fun stuff (fun car, guns, etc.)

Many of my guns are bigger than a pocket, beer that will fit in a backpack is NOT enough beer and you can only fit one woman on the back of a motorcycle (hard work getting the one without the Harley, you might not like 'em but ladies love 'em). If you don't have a truck you're paying someone else to haul your crap, ever carried a TV on a motorcycle? Not fun. Mow your own lawn? When I got my first house, that mower didn't come home in the trunk of a car. Do other yard maintenance? That aspen you just cut down won't get to the recycle on the back of your bike.

Grow your own food? Try fitting a couple yards of garden soil in a car. Try fitting landscape timbers for raised beds in your car.

Own a yard? Want to build patio with your own hands and not hired help? How you going to get your pavers, sand and breeze home without a truck?

Own a house? Want to remodel/make improvements? Drywall, counter-tops, loads of 2x4's, etc don't get to your house in a 2-door.

Do you hunt to put food in your freezer? Ever drive a car through 2ft of snow and mud deep into the mountains during hunting season to get to camp? Ever fit an elk in a hatchback?

These things are all "needs" that are directly associated to my self-sufficiency which is something I am not willing to "detach" myself from. These large things do not own me, but free me from being dependant on others. If I only had a car and motorcycle, my meat and veggies would all only come from the store, my yard would only be kept by a hired hand and my home and yard would only be improved by a contractor...No thank you.

No, but I ran into a pair of guys from Pueblo elk hunting one year...they had 2 bull tags, one 30/30, a tent, a cooler, sleeping bags all stuffed into a Datsun B210. We asked them how they planned on getting two bull elk back home...if I had video, I would be rich. [ROFL3]

Those guys with the Datsun would be in trouble if they shot something.

I thought I was prepared with a truck until my buddy shot a 6x6 (scored 355) this last season and that bull's head wouldn't fit in the truck bed with the shell on. Luckily he had a trailer.

The shell also doesn't help when I go get landscape materials...have to load by hand.

But I still love the shell because it is much more useful day-to-day...pick your battles I guess.

I had to ditch my first truck when the 2nd kid arrived, single cab, cannot safely fit everyone in it. Pretty sad day for me.

Replaced with a 99 dodge caravan, always said I'd never buy one, but it turns out to be the best choice for the family. (at that time anyways)

24 2x4's would fit under the seats of that Caravan, it was designed that way. I put a hitch on it and towed the utility trailer for home depot runs. Worked out for many years.

Had to find a truck so we could get a new camper and take the kids on camping trips.

Now I own an older truck, but end up renting a truck for some of the family outings. They like air conditioning that works, radio that works and no breakdowns.

Last trip just a couple weekends ago, I ended up with a FORD rental. Not my first choice, but it treated us well. Diesel power is amazing.

Toyota Corolla, 02' 4Runner, had a 95' F-150 4x4 but sold it recently. I've got plenty of friends with trailers and trucks so if I absolutely need something large moved I borrow one. Few people truly "need" a truck, most just want one. I don't knock anyone for their choice in personal transportation though. If it gets you where you have to go, from point A-B then screw it.

I'm sure there'll be some clashing opinions! :)

I have a couple of questions for those of you that know more than I do about pickups (ie, all of you):

I saw a giant pickup in the Home Depot parking lot. I had to take a picture of it because I'd never seen one quite like it.

47747

Is that what 'lifted' means?
Doesn't that throw off the balance of the truck? What is the reason for raising the body of the truck up so high?

I know it's hard to tell, but the bottom of the doors were really, really high. Even with those steps, a guy would have to scramble a bit to get into it, much less be able to load heavy stuff into the bed.

Body lifts will allow for larger tires and more suspension.
Larger tires will get you more ground clearance.
More suspension will get you better traction over large obstacles.

I've been away from the hard core off-roading for several years.
There are several on this board who can school me on the subject.

TheGrey

Okay! Thanks, davsel. I didn't realize the part about the clearance (although I guess I didn't really think it through.)

For the record I like trucks.I used to get paid to drive pretty cool trucks owned by Uncle Sam. Wish I was my own LEO Agency so I could get a free 6x6 MRAP.
Im not suggesting if you dont need a truck you shouldnt own one. I dont need an AR-15 either but I'll be damned if someone tells me I shouldnt. Still most folks I know dont hunt except at the frozen food section, dont do much yard work or grow their own food. Unfortunate as that is it is what it is. Growing up in rural Ohio my Dad had a E-350 diesel 15 pack van a Massey Ferguson 165 tractor, and a 12' trailer. We never needed a pickup.
