How often you get that perfect split?
Better than doing it inside a tire I suppose.

personally it looks like the slow way to do it. and I never want my wood in such small pieces. It burns way to quick.
if you want to do it right, you do it like this.

I was going to get one until I realized it wouldn't fit in the living room by the fireplace [Sarcasm2]
I wish I had one of those when I was a kid splitting wood in the summer. Would have save a lot of the "building character" episodes.

Looks dangerous, loose your concentration for a second and off goes the hand.
Also helpful for getting the bodies to fit in the suitcase
I swung a chainsaw today. Swinging a hydraulic log splitter next Friday.

My father chopped up wood on this setup - John Deere Model B with buzz saw.

Presumably you've got to leave the wood out so that the sub-freezing temps can make it more brittle, no?
Neat splitting technique but you won't find a native Colorado tree that will split like that.
Drooling over that log cutter-splitter attachment for the skid loader. I could use one of those.
I could probably get access to something similar to this...for $150 an hour. [Eek2]

My seasoned lodgepoles pop just like that, but it has to be very dry. "Kinda dry" takes a few swings.
But in general, even if it takes a few swings, not having to bend over repeatedly (insert joke here), is great. Then not having to gather all the chunks and stack each individually...awesome. my 9 year old would love that part. I may try this on logs over maybe 12" diameter. Smaller than that it's not worth it.

Even cooler than the Bobcat model! Wonder how they're dealing with the finished pieces to keep them from piling up?

The machine is powered by a wood gasifier, so that wood goes straight to the fuel tank.

I would just buy a 22 ton splitter. Can be had new for around $1000. In the spring you can find a few in the $750 range.
