Just a quick question, when you guys are at the firing range, what distance do you usually put your target at for handguns?

10 yards generally. No where in my house is there a distance greater than 10 yards so I stick to that for the most part.

7 yards for most shooting. If I am standing still, then I put them as far as I feel like walking to change targets. Besides, I can't see the holes real well past 25 yards. [LOL]

All of our requal courses except one, go from 1.5 yards to 25 yards. For our annual in-service we used to shoot our last string at 50 yards. The times were ridiculously long on that string (I don't recall how long for three rounds but it was somewhere between 15 and 20 seconds from the draw). One qual course for a certain agency was all done at 7 yards. The trick on that course was timing, with lots of emphasis on split times. I still enjoy shooting that course, but it takes a bit of practice to get the rhythm down.

Whatever distance the IDPA stage is at, or 10yds off hand when testing a new load. I can't hit whatever I'm shooting no matter the distance if I'm shooting around HBAR for some reason.

So my 7-10 yard is where I should be for practicing. I heard most gunfights happen between that range, I am not a total noob lol. Was 12 year medic with the Army, two deployments just never really used my good ol M9, for some strange reason felt better with the M4

The standard description used to describe self defense gun fights is 3 rounds at 3 yards in 3 seconds from the ready position. Obviously, no one knows where you will be and what the circumstances would be if, God forbid you find yourself actually using your firearm.

When the weather is nice, and you have someone to act as a safety, it can be fun to try some unusual shooting positions. Left side, right side from the ground. From your back, feet toward the target, but make sure your feet are spread and toes out [Coffee]

I'll start as low as 5yds on occasion and rarely go past 13yds. 8-11 is sort of where I like to stick.

Handgun - 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 yards. I'm working my way out.

Rifle I like a 200 yard zero with ARs and 30 caliber rifles.

Depending on the drills, arms length to 7 yards (3' to 21' +/-) and sometimes two targets at different distances. For fun I will shoot at reactive targets out to 50+ yards with any of my handguns.

I've only ever seen him shoot in the air yelling ARRRRIBA! He is pretty good at clearing the sombrero before he touches off the shot. Helps to ensure the bullet doesn't come straight back down on us.

Seriously, anywhere from 3 to 200 with a handgun (not that I'm a ringer at that distance). For testing handloads, or generally seeing what a gun is capable of doing, 20-25 yards. Less than that and you aren't really learning anything about the load / gun.

Arms length to 25 yds for pistol drills, 25-200 yds rimfire rifle, 100 yds and up for center fire rifle.

Usually between 7 and 15 yds, but I like to play around at 50 or even 100yds sometimes with steel. I can usually hit a 12" steel round at 100 yds about 1/4 of the time with a G19. [Dunno]

At 7-15yds, I like to practice shooting from odd positions: simulating getting knocked over or tripping over a curb before/while trying to stop a threat. I also like to practice engaging a target while moving laterally - "Get off the X" so to speak. Admittedly, I don't spend enough time shooting or practicing weapon manipulation with my left hand

Between 1 and 50 yards, depending on the stage/drill. But the preponderance of them are at 7yards.

7-10y for a majority of my SD pistol shooting. 25yds for handload development.

Unless like myself, seeing 25 yds is not happening with stock / iron hand gun sights. Or realistic with a 2.5" bbl, continuously. Now if i was back doing IDPA & 3 gun then yes.

Like a few here I start at arms length then go to 3 yards, 5, 7, 10, 15 and a few at 25. This is my normal warm up drill. If I'm practicing my sd skills I vary from arms length to 10, all done from the holster. After I'm done with that it's fun to just try different distances though my range is limited to running targets at 25 yards max. The last advanced class I took the instructor had us take a few shots at steel targets at 50 and 100 yards. That was fun.
