I put in for a transfer at my work for a job in Washington state and I also have a job interview at another place. Can any of you tell me about the Everett and also the Silverdale area? From what I hear they are two very different places. Of the two, which one is a more desirable place to live?

The wife and I visit Everett almost yearly. It's a decent city, though I didn't research it's crime rates. People
in general are nice and the landscape is beautiful. Not many gun stores or shooting ranges that I could find through a Google search. Traffic blows 5x worse than Denver IMO. Not sure if any of this helps it's just my experience. Feel better traveling around in WA now that I have my CCW for Washington state.

I don't know about the cities you mentioned but i have spent some time in Washington; the west is green and moist, the east is more desert. I spent most of my time around the southern Seattle area. It wasn't bad, just more rain than I am used to.

I lived in Washington for seven years (undergrad and I worked at the capitol) in the 90s. I never made it up to the Silverdale Area, just the naval yards in Bremerten. It was definitely a beautiful area. Is your job in the Seattle area? If so, you have the fairy commute from Bremerten. I wouldn't live out there unless you know what you are getting into. Everett is a Naval port town along with industrial namely Boeing; I didn't spend any time up ther. Personally, I liked the southern end of the sound a lot more than the north. If you go up there, I would definitely rent and spend some time getting to know the area. I am not familiar with the traffic patterns any more, but the King County Seattle Metro was horrific when I lived there.

As of right now I would potentially be working in Silverdale or in Everett. I've heard that the traffic is bad so I would live as close to my work as feasible. I hear mixed things about Bremerton, but I'd guess it's just like any other place that has a base near it. I'm wanting to get out of the defense industry and the job in Silverdale is a transfer of my current job and the job in Everett is a new career path for me so I'm just trying to get a feel for the pro's and con's of both.

From what I remember, the areas surrounding Bremerten were really nice; I wouldn't mind living out there. If you lived near Everett without the commute, I wouldn't mind that either. The state (mainly King County) is pretty far left. There is a pretty strong firearms culture there; I can give you some contacts.

That would be awesome. We are definitely moving there once I find a job. I spent some time in Oregon, so I've accustomed to some of their crazy ways.

Be aware they just passed some crazy ass piece of garbage UBGC laws there that appear to be even more restrictive than ours. Like letting someone shoot your guns at a range is a felony.

FWIW, I flew to into SEATAC with a few carry guns over Thanksgiving (Utah CFP) and par for the course, the UA agent on the return was clueless and asked if I had TSA approved locks for my Pelican case. I responded, "If by TSA approved you mean a padlock that only I can open, then yes. However, I'm sure that's not what you meant and here's how it works..." I had to explain the process to him. Derp.

The only good thing was that inbound, some astute baggage handler made sure the case got pulled for ID check. I would prefer they all do that instead of dumping them on the carousel.

Aero Precision and SAA are right in Tacoma, a few blocks form each other. My son does lots of shopping there.

Doh, I lived in WA for about 7 years (like MED, for my (failed) undergrad then working for a few years), but that was in the Redmond/Bellevue area. Plus, I didn't get out too much, so I'm not really much help. I know one of the summers during my undergrad I was working for about a month and a half up in the Everett area. I only saw the bit where I was working, but it seemed reasonable I guess (at least, reasonable city-wise, no comment on political leanings or otherwise). Don't know anything Silverdale.

As for Washington in general, it's fairly wet, so if you're outdoorsy that could be a downer, but if you stay inside a lot like I did, it's not a huge issue. It does keep everything green and beautiful though, so that's pretty nice. In the Seattle area (again, not sure if Everett's quite the same but since it's relatively nearby I imagine so), it doesn't snow much so they don't really have much in the way to prepare when it DOES snow. If it snows, chances are the city shuts down (by CO standards it wouldn't be bad, but it does get icy, particularly since they don't plow nor put down salt). The Seattle area bus system is pretty nice and goes just about everywhere with reasonable frequency, but I don't think Everett's part of it, so don't know if it qualifies.

Hope that helps a bit, though it probably doesn't :P lol

I didn't let the rain stop me. I spent a lot of time on the hiking trails. Some of the old growth trails in the Cascades are awesome!!! I also spent a lot of time in and around the Olympic Peninsula. I really liked the San Juan Islands and the outer sound. There is a ton of stuff to do outside!!!

We both love the rain and the outdoors, so I'm looking forward to wearing out those trails myself.

"The measure would establish a number of exceptions to the background check requirement. A background check would not be required to transfer a firearm by gift between family members. The background check requirement also would not apply to the sale or transfer of antique firearms. It also would not apply to certain temporary transfers of a firearm when needed to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm. Background checks would not be required for certain public agencies or officers acting in their official capacity, including law enforcement or corrections agencies or officers, members of the military, and federal officials. Federally licensed gunsmiths who receive firearms solely to service or repair them would not be required to undergo background checks.

Certain other temporary transfers of a firearm would also not require a background check. These include temporary transfers between spouses, and temporary transfers for use at a shooting range, in a competition, or for performances. A temporary transfer to a person under age eighteen for hunting, sporting, or education would not require a background check. Other temporary transfers for lawful hunting also would not require a background check."

Doesn't sound too different from here.

The initiative is a poorly worded mess, and will likely spend some time in the courts. Currently, there is no magazine limit and no restrictions on semi-auto firearms, but the antis are pushing on these two issues. You can have SBRs but no SBS. You can have a suppressor. There are no transfers of class III allowed. They have a shall issue concealed carry, which I had in the 90s. With concealed carry, no background check or waiting period was required; I don't know how/if the initiative changed that. The legislature has been friendly to gun owners in recent years. My friends up there feel about the same as us here in Colorado; things are changing.

Your generalizations about Washington are un true over half the state is in a rain shadow desert. I grew up in wa and caught Scorpions and rattlesnakes and saw the sun on a regular basis.

I like Everett better but again I grew up on the dry side.

Huh, interesting, didn't know that. Then again, as mentioned before, I was only there for 7 years, and was a very homebody who didn't get out much lol.

Was going to make a new post about this, but since you bring it up, just read this interesting piece:

Which part? I had friends in Spokane so I spent time out there; initially, I was surprised at how similar it was to the front range here in Colorado

I'll just point out again, that transfers at a range - UNLESS THE FIREARM IS PERMANENTLY STORED AT SAID RANGE - are a felony.

Or so I've been told in the intarwebz.

I grew up in the NW. As said there are many parts of the state. We used to run down off Mt Hood with 3 trucks full of snow and build a snowman on the 4th of July. Day after Xmas used to go to the east side and get sunburn. Used to like the tri cities area. I5 was a mess back in the 70's. Last time I was in the sea-tac area for a couple of weeks a few years ago it was downright stupid.

I grew up in "The Ditch" but now like it a little closer to the cascade range. The coast range is for growing moss, everything and anything is green.[LOL][Flower]

I talked to one of my friends up there and updated my twenty year old knowledge of the area. Kitsap county is growing and somewhat larger than I remember. However, it is still somewhat rural and really close to the state and national parks. One thing I also thought about is isolation. Personally, I prefer to live isolated from metro areas because I really really really don't like them. However, living out there might not be for everyone; either you drive south to cross the Narrows into Tacoma or go by fairy into Seattle. There is a lot available for outdoor recreation in Snohomish country too if you live in Everett. I guess between the two it really depends on your lifestyle. Do you want more metropolitan or rural?

I'm thinking that the rural would suit us and the dog better than a metropolitan area, but we can do both. We live in Downtown right now and it's nice, but I would say that we are more into being outdoors and isolated.
