I have a coworker who's looking for an optic for 600-1,000yd range. I can't recommend him anything as I don't have that knowledge or experience in long range shooting. What equipment are you experienced shooters using and why? What would be your Holy Grail of optics? Thanks for your help, guys.

What's his budget?

What would be your Holy Grail of optics?Premier Heritage 5-25x56. I have 2 and they are fantastic.

What's his budget?Great question! It really depends on the type of shooting your friend wants to do. 600-1k can be achieved with a $300 fixed 10x scope, but can also be achieved with a $3500 S&B...

Good glass is expensive. Even more when you start dialing knobs.

2-3K is a good starting point price wise.

What's his budget?

He's expecting $1k and over. I know that's extremely broad, but he's just seeing what others are using and will go from there to see if he can afford it.

Low end, look at Vortex Viper PST. ($1,000)

Middle of the road is Steiner T5Xi ($1,700)

Moving up is Vortex Razor HD Gen II ($2,500)

Then Nightforce ATACR ($3,000?, they're not out yet)

Then S&B ($3,700)

There are 20 other choices probably, but that list would get him started.

All will get the job done well enough.

This guy tested out 18 different high end scopes and wrote about his findings here: http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/09/19/tactical-scopes-field-test-results-summary/

However these are $1500 minimum.

Another good site for your friend to review. A lot of it is "eye of the beholder".

My preference is for the SWFA SS 5-20X out to a 1000 yards. Not Alpha glass but good balance between optical quality/reliability and price.

Look at the Burris XTR II

I am just curios, how many of you can hit 1,000 yards? I want to get back to some distance shooting this year and was wondering how many of you are shooting past 600 and what are reaching out with?

Caliber, not glass.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but this seems to be relevant. (at least to me)

Depends on the target size...

Depends on the target size...

What Hoser said... Some of my best shooting was when I was about 14yrs old, using my Dad's 1903A3, shooting at a trash can lid sized rock well over 700yds. I became a believer of the '03. Nowdays, I can honestly say....'what target?' because I can't see for squat due to prolonged computer work.

With a .308 I can if the wind cooperates ... With enough ammo I can hit anything eventually

Depends on the target size...

And how much wind is blowing.

There are a whole bunch of us here who shoot out to and beyond 1K. Last fall, three of us shot a mile (1760 yards).

My 7 year old daughter can hit a 14" plate at 1k. I seen her do it with a 6.5 Creedmoor. Only took her 4 shoots. Would have been less if she would have got better wind calls from the spotter.

That is impressive! I'm with Aadvaark,,, What target? Lol.
I might have to go shooting with you distance guys this year. I was on the battalion rifle team when I was the 10th MTN and was pretty good, but we still used muskets then.

You could try the T3 match too. Weldona CO, 2nd Saturdays. Stage 1 is 5 targets from 1130y - 1350y!

And yes these matches are a lot of fun!

Burris XTRII. I run the 4-20 on my long range rifles. Best bang for the buck. Great glass and repeatable dialing.

I hit a 950 yard Plate with a 77gr using a 12x scope. Anything is possible.

I could do that if I was at 1000 yards.

With enough ammo I could do it without a scope. Doesn't really count.

One shot or none so power is your friend

Yes but I did it under match conditions [Beer] and it took me 3 rnds. Was ecstatic didn't even shoot the last 2 rnds at the target.
