So I stumbled across this: https://instagram.com/p/47thEmoE5J/
Any ideas how one would "put the gun in" a vise for this kind of testing?
Guy hasn't shown anything about his fixture, and the results are remarkable.
Fun side thought experiment: What happens if you clamp the slide of a Glock in a vise, and fire? I have an answer in mind..
I think he clamped the frames dust cover in the vise. Clamping on the slide while pulling the trigger on a loaded auto loading pistol sounds like a great way to F'k your day up.
Getting a laser right on an equally sized dot at 50 yards sounds down right tedious.
Edit: I'd like to see this test done with a subcompact barrel for sure.

i've seen rimfire shooters hold the bolt closed for single shot suppressed . I have hard plastic jaws that i can use some motorcycle body armor inserts and secure it by the grip and frame. Not to hard.
What's the issue?

I've held the slide closed on my .40, it's different to just hold the slide though.

I was also thinking that if the pistol has a light/accessory rail on its dust cover, he could attach a red dot QD base to it and then clamp the base into the vise. A half-assed Ransom Rest. My curiosity isn't great enough to warrant me trying to hold the slide closed on a .9mm-.45ACP.

I contend (and will test this weekend) that nothing will happen. The gun will fire, and sit still, with no cycling. A Glock is (large order) recoil operated, with a tilt-lock barrel. As videos above have shown, the recoil force is certainly surmountable.

It's pretty obvious that you're right. The "equal and opposite" force of the bullet traveling down the bore is on the breach face. The slide is one with the breach face, so nothing will move. And it won't damage anything, either (except perhaps marring of the slide by the vice :)).

You guys are not as cool as I thought. I was shown how to hold the slide for a "contact" shot a while ago. I was expecting you guys to be doing one-handed reload and recocking your slide with your teeth.
I researched a bit and found that, yes, you can fire the pistol while the slide is held static. Still not doing it.
Could this possibly change velocity or pressure since some of the force us no longer being absorbed by the function of the slide?

A while back my team practiced this in the event we are in a very close confrontation with an assailant. I was a little fearful at first having never held the slide while firing, but found that even without gloves there was no pain or damage. Just hold firmly to prevent the slide from moving. If you don't, you could experience slide bite.
First round into your adversary, then immediate action drill while stepping away from the enemy and firing follow up rounds. Excellent training in today's environment.
