Found this thing in my backyard. Actually, it was hanging about 10 feet away from my roofline and about 10 feet away from the tree at the other end of its massive web. When it saw me, it scurried over to the tree. The web was very strong and could easily support the weight of the 6ft wooden trellis stake that I was using to take it down. It was only about 15 feet away from where I sleep at night... [panic]
Any idea what it is?

Best photo I could get to show it's size (Fat part of it's body is about 3/4" across):

Just kidding. I have no idea.
Maybe one of our resident arachnologists will be by shortly.
It's a creepy looking thing whatever it is.
My vote is orb weaver.
Huge annoying webs but very beneficial if you have garden. We have a family in the back yard. They don't bother us until you walk through one of their webs.
That's a killitwithfire spider. Part of the needstodienow family or arachnids.

I think it is an orb weaver too.
I believe it is a catface....

I have been seeing some odd spiders that I suspect are cat face spiders but different from the typical look. They have been everywhere this fall.

Ive had the same thing living in one of my window wells since mid summer. They are huge!
Looks like a mini mobile Big Mac. Kill it and taste the special sauce inside to confirm.

Since I have a garden that is struggling to deal with numerous insects, I transplanted it to my garden to see if it makes a home there. No special sauce tasting this time. ;)

I think it's an orb weaver, too. Saw them all the time in at the house in Bailey. They seem to be pretty harmless. Unless you have sex with them. The females eat the males after sex.

Although I like watching the orb weaver spin it's Web I hate the bastards in the mornings. Nothing like walking through a Web on the way to your truck when your half asleep.

I think you need more than a 9mm for that one. Better go straight to .50 cal to be safe.

In your Colorado garden, spiders are mostly superheroes (except one) (http://www.denverpost.com/homegarden/ci_28208116/your-colorado-garden-spiders-are-mostly-superheroes-except)
Catface spider image in this article looks similar to the OP photo.

Cat face spiders and Orb Weavers are from same family of spiders, everybody was correct. Weather this year helped with bumper crop.

I have a couple at my house too. I always see they have a pretty good catch, so I leave them alone.

Those spiders are actually pretty cool. I had one build a web in front of a wasp nest at my house. Started off about the size of a lima bean, it just disappeared for the winter and it was roughly the size of a half dollar. It probably didnt help that I found grasshopppers and threw them into its web for dinner.

P.S. That thing looks bigger than the mouse I caught last night.
Worthless cat scared it into a pouch on a gun case and couldn't get it (no front claws). I got it out with a tongs after pulling out the mags.
Now, experience has taught me that if there's one baby mouse to be caught...
