View Full Version : Fanny packs, seriously??
So got an email from Cops Plus this morning with the latest and greatest fanny packs for ccw. Whaaat?? I knew a few guys back in the day (I hate that phrase but it works lol) that used to carry their gear in a fanny pack. They weren't "gun guys" and liked how easy it was to take off, stash in a drawer then grab and put on when it was time to leave. I can maybe even see it as a bare minimum "go bag" for someone that only has one pistol and a couple of mags/speedloaders (do these 1 gun creatures really exist or are they only figments of imagination??).
To use as a serious daily ccw method I just have to shake my head as they go against the whole "low profile" thing that most folks adhere to. Ok, that's my vent for the day-back to vacation, you all take it easy, have a safe and Happy 4th!!

I think the movie Central Intelligence is trying to bring the fanny pack/belly bag back in fashion- it's good enough for "The Rock"
I knew a guy that carried in a fanny pack. It was a little embarrassing to be seen with him when he was wearing it. Lol.
Guy at work had one for a long time. We named it "Mitch"
My father inlaw wears one don't think he's even shot a gun. Not sure what the hell he has in there...

Sometimes I choose to carry in a fanny pack. I don't live my life caring about how I look to others.
If they think I'm a fat old tourist because of the fanny pack, good - camouflages me as a potential threat.

I have a Camelbak Goblin that is specifically made for CCW, It has a separate pocket with a holster. I have only used it a few times while hiking and biking.

Nothing wrong with fanny packs. Not to say they don't have some down sides but almost every form of carry does. They're very handy in the summer when you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt. You can keep all sorts of stuff in them in addition to a gun. When properly worn (assuming you get a dedicated gun-type pack) the draw is almost as quick as a hip holster from concealment. I always tried to find a color other than black...blue or tan maybe.
Blackhawk made one that was fantastic several years ago...but it screamed "tactical" and "gun". It was really comfortable and secure, though. I had to ride the light rail in plain clothes with another officer for the first two weeks it was operational from the south-metro end to downtown and that's what I wore. Held gun, mags, badge, cuffs, etc.

I'd rock one! I was a kid when they were really popular, I had a neon green and orange one. I'm married with two kids, I don't quite care if anyone things I look "cool" or not....

I guess since most of my social group is made up of armed folks we tend to notice things like that as does every cop/leo of some sort that I know lol. In almost 49 years of carrying I've had one occasion when I was spotted carrying early in my twenties when I didn't bend at the knees to get something off the grocery shelf. That was fun dealing with the cops just as I got to my car and getting it cleared up :D!
I'm just too used to checking people out and do everything I can not to advertise. Oh and don't think the bad guys don't look at fanny packs the same way, they most certainly do.
Well what else am I going to do for CCW when I'm wearing my spandex pants?
But seriously, when wearing certain clothes (not spandex), I have carried in a fanny pack to my wife's chagrin.
Must just be me lol. In my chauvinistic approach I guess I can see it being less obvious on a woman, no I don't know why but I do. I appreciate all your views, especially those where the tongue is placed firmly in cheek. :)

I think I know who you are referring to, Ray. Didn't you 2 used to wander the Tanners together?

Fanny packs are one of those things that "if it works it ain't stupid" ... ugly, yeah ... but not stupid.
I used to carry in one when bicycling. Now I don't care if you can see the gun under my shirt so I just carry on my belt while biking.

Pretty much where I'm at with carrying and biking. Husband, Wife, and two toddlers in a bike trailer, if you think I'm a threat, I don't know what to tell you.

Your attitude is precisely why carrying in a fanny pack works. I like fanny packs -- now known as lumbar packs due to sensitive egos -- (usually without the concealed carry) when I'm hiking because I can mount my water bottles in holsters on either side and everything I need for the hike is in one tidy package that comes off easily.

you like like an old person or tourist, unless you are running or something I guess.
What the heck is wrong with looking like an OLD person?[Sarcasm2] [ROFL2]

That's not a winning attitude! You ought to be a very serious threat to anyone who means to harm you or your family. ;)

Make sure they're lube, it's gonna hurt.
Who cares what your personal carry rig is. It's not a fukin fashion show.
It would be so much easier carrying all of my crap if it was more socially acceptable for men to carry purses.
I wear one.... Elk hunting I prefer it over a backpack http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160713/f7d225a8b604628b3cc64a886e2abcae.jpg

This reminded me of a sticker on the Ironhead Harley I used to ride (came on the bike- left it because I liked it)

Dude...it's 2016. If you identify as one who carries a purse it's OK.
