View Full Version : Hail!
Got a light ass beating from tonight's hail. 5 broken windows on the house, one car looks like a golf ball with wheels, broken windows and lights the other two cars took light damage on the roof and sides. Roof will need to be checked for sure. Not too bad all told. Anyone else?

We had what looked like a typhoon at my house!
Sheets of driving rain followed by heavy hail.
I have never had a storm like this come at us from the south.
I am afraid what I will find in the light of day.
Richard
No roof is safe from hail. Colorado Springs got pounded with 2-2.5" hail. One of our techs got his windshield smashed out on his 3 day old truck. Expect CAT adjusters to start arriving in force by Saturday, and roofers to be knocking on every door tomorrow morning. The people in Highlands Ranch can tell you what to expect for the next month.
Clear here. We usually get thunder and lightning when the front range gets hammered.
Plan on your windows, siding and roof getting replaced... Plan on your doorbell ringing constantly.
This happened in Windsor a few years ago. Smaller hail though.
Both cars totaled and $30K worth of damage to the house.
Now you know why insurance rates suck in CO.
My car had a few rain spots on it this morning, but I got to my office in Lakewood and there were leaves all over the parking lot from the hail ripping into the trees.

Part of that was due to the hail lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Longer than a month. The shingle delivery trucks in the streets and the sound of roofs being scraped and re-shingled is still a daily occurrence.

I'm still getting claims from there, and will for the next year or so. Not everyone will turn in a claim right away, especially when they have a brand new roof from the last storm.
Walking through the parking lot this morning, I could tell who either doesn't have a garage or uses it for storage rather than its intended purpose.
Make sure the roofing folks note any damage to anything outside -- deck all dinged? note. Patio furniture messed up? note. etc. The insurance company will be obligated to pay for that. However, if you simply pocket the money and it happens again, you don't get to claim that in the future.
DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING OR PAY ANYTHING TO HAVE YOUR ROOF INSPECTED. DO NOT PAY ANYTHING UP FRONT WHEN GETTING YOUR ROOF REPLACED.
After the Highlands Ranch storm, some shady contractor was having people sign a "release" granting them permission to get up on the roof to inspect. It was really a contract people were signing that had stuff like a 50% restocking fee for cancellations and other garbage. When you've chosen your contractor is okay to sign a contact, but you should not do so just to have someone inspect your roof.

Not all roofers do other things besides roofs, but there are many, many companies that say they do everything now. The adjusters will inspect the entire property and don't need help from roof sales people to find damage. However, those roof sales people make more money with the more damage they find, so it is unlikely that any collateral damage will be missed between the two people looking at your property.

I only know what the guy who trained me on roofing repair sales does, which is a comprehensive inspection of the entire property, pre-adjuster's inspection. He didn't repair anything but the roof, though, and if the homeowner wanted the work done he would point them to contractors he trusted for that work.

Are those measurement the amount of hail that accumulated or the size of the hailstones? If it's the latter, holy damn...
The size of the hailstone. Accumulation doesn't really mean anything.

There was that tornado that touched down in Belmar a few years ago.
I usually get hail at my place about once every two years. It's usually pea sized and seldom lasts more than a minute or two.
My truck is always parked out in the driveway. Zero hail damage in seventeen years.
Also, my roof is right twenty years old.
I do feel bad for all of you guys that keep getting pounded.
I'm still getting claims from there, and will for the next year or so. Not everyone will turn in a claim right away, especially when they have a brand new roof from the last storm.
My roof probably won't get done til fall . . . like August or Sept. The adjuster from State Farm was out the other day and said "yup--your roof is trashed . . . but it's not a leak danger and you might as well wait til after hail season to replace it." Many of my neighbors have gotten theirs done already, but some of them had bad leaks.
Since we could get another storm yet this summer (or several) I'll just ride it out rather than risk another deductible coming up.

I have a Class 4 roof and I'm hoping it worked, I'm selling my house next week.
Have an inspection Monday to see if there was any damage.
Also have an inspection on the house I want to buy too, it was right in the area the heaviest hail was reported near Stetson Hills.
Might get a new roof on my new 'to me' home.
I feel bad for everyone that got damage !!

Semi-related question: my roof is old (at least twenty years old) and old three-tab shingles... if I did get hail damage, would insurance cover any of it? I wouldn't think so, but wanted to find out from some of our people in the biz.

Ray, it sounds like you need a hail storm. Otherwise you’re going to be paying the whole bill to replace a 20-year-old roof pretty soon. But you may want to get you truck in the garage before it happens.

Look at your policy. Every policy will be different on the roof stuff but you very well could have full benefit for it....or you may only get 30%.
Coworker of mine lives in the springs and will be needing a new roof, new siding, new windows in vehicles, etc. etc. Has stones in his freezer, and pictures of stones measuring 2.5". Guess he lives right in the heart of the area that got slammed last night.
He said his dog was still freaked out this morning, from the storm.

There were significant hail storms on Sep 29th in both 2014, and 2015.

It depends on your policy. Some companies (The Hartford) have gone to straight ACV policies and a 20-year old roof won't have much actual cash value. Other companies (Allstate) have gone to a roof payment schedule, which is slightly better than an ACV policy, but more or less the same thing. Even within those companies, there are different policies so you may still have full replacement cost. Alternatively, some companies treat 20-year 3-tab shingles like T-locks and will total the roof with only a few, marginal hail hits.

Same as above, it really depends on the policy.

I had to buy gap insurance to cover the roof since insurance won't pick up the tab until it's over around $120k. New roof cost is $80-$90k.

Hail at our place was strange. I sat on the front porch listening to a stone hit the neighbor to the rights roof then a stone hitting the neighbor's car across the street take a hit. They were an inch plus but kind of like taking turns dropping from the sky. It last about 10 minutes and was pretty cool until I took a recochet to the collar bone.

Generally, the larger the stones, the wider the dispersion of stones will be. If you have a storm last an hour though, then it won't matter.
Sounds like it's a commercial residential property. HOA policies for condos often have $10,000 deductibles, so if something happens in the common space that causes damage to your place, but the damage is under $10,000, the HOA won't even file a claim. Anyone who lives in a condo should find out what the HOA deductible is and make sure they have the appropriate coverage to cover the gap. I can't think of the term right now since I've been out of claims for a bit.

Saw that on the hail reports. Looks like it's coming down every where.
Garden appears destroyed, only salvaged one undersized jalapeno. South-facing garage door is dimpled, no skylights or south-facing windows, whew. Small tree's leaves shredded, may not survive after the previous shredding back in May. Pines are thinned out, assume they will be fine based on size and age. Haven't been up on the roof yet. Next door neighbors have golf-ball sized hail in the freezer.
Was parked at the airport, dimples all over the roof and hood, plastic trim busted up. Couldn't see much more in the dark.
Who-cares-about-fuel-economy thickness sheet metal on the old jeep came through just fine, or there were already enough dents that new ones weren't noticeable.
