Was browsing amazon and came across a few android phones that amazon sells at a discounted price. Catch is they have advertisements that pop up on the home screen. They have one called the Blu R1 HD for $60 then a couple Motorola's for around $150.
For $60 i would probably pick one up as a backup phone or a vegas phone.

Nope. I hate ads.

Hell NO. Such ads are a pain in the butt. As we get older, the less we want to be bothered with stupid crap such as worthless ads.[blaster]

If its going to have ads I want it for free. How much are the same phones ad free?

Can you jailbreak them? Wipe them and install Ubuntu for Phones (http://www.ubuntu.com/phone)?

I likely wouldn't buy the phones sans ads. I appreciate new technology and enjoy having the "flagship" phones, so some second or third tier phone doesn't really appeal to me.

ETA: I'm not made of money by any stretch, but cell phones are actually an item that my carrier makes enjoying the "finer things" affordable.

As long as I was resigned to never being able to snap a picture on the fly or make a call without closing an ad first.

Absolutely not. I can't stand that some of my apps (not even games) have ads. Hell, I get sick of having to close ads just to view the main page on 9News.com. Don't they make enough revenue from selling ad space on TV? /rant

My phone already listens to my conversations and brings up ads.

This was my thought. What if you need to dial 911? BUT THE AD STILL HAS 8 SECONDS LEFT

Free porn? I already get ads for bongs on my computer. I spend so much time on my computer, I already have the internet memorized. I could use a really cheap satellite phone, for my wilderness work. My cheap ass cell phone, costs me $80 a year. My truck has its own phone. Two phones in the house...

Wait, you have a phone in your house? Like one of those old school landlines? [ROFL1]

Nope. You can easily find used phones for sale on your Nextdoor site, or refurbished through your carrier. I have 'backup'/burner phones that I can buy at Walmart, purchase minutes, and be under $50. They're not the fancy phones, but they're great for what I need them to do. No ads!

Sort of, but it uses VoIP.

I have a discounted Kindle that has ads on the screen when it goes to sleep. Swipe the screen to wake it up and the ad goes away. The ads are pretty easy to ignore.

Only if it was really cheap, was the latest bad ass model, and I could wipe the thing clean and install a custom rom.

Nope.

The last phone I bought from AT&T had all kinds of their crap added to it. Plus it was a POS. Took it back and will never buy another one from them.

I've had good luck getting used/refurb phones off eBay.

Is their a jailbreak to get rid of the ads?

Oh cool, do you like it? Is the quality good (sound, latency, etc)? The only time I've ever used a VoIP phone was in Asscrackistan, and it was crackly and laggy, probably due to having to run all the IP connections via SATCOMs (our internet was about 750Kbps).

I'd say we're already there... Have you tried watching more than 3 YouTube videos in a row?

Fuckin' ads - it's getting to where I hate to even check my email at all.

Exactly. My wife's Kindle is one of those, and the ads are very unobtrusive. Basically, it means she doesn't get to choose her own screensaver. The same swipe that would unlock a normal shone dismisses the ad.

We still have a land line at the house ... and the phone in the living room is a green 701 Princess dial phone.

I also don't have a cell phone (certainly not a smart phone) ... well that's not entirely true, when my dad passed away my mom gave me his flip phone so we could use it on the highway when driving back to Kansas once a year ... its got AT&T service so it doesn't actually work at our house so it sits in a drawer most of the time.

My dad still has an old Stromberg-Carlson dial phone. It weighs approximately 15 pounds and will likely survive a direct strike from a lightning bolt.

Absolutely not. If you want a cheap backup phone, get one from one of the many people who have to have the latest tech and activate it on Ting:

Ok, Princess. :)

An Ooma VOIP will cost about $5.00 a month after buying the box. Three years in and 0 problems.
