I Bought my father a Henry 3030 for his 75th birthday a couple of years back.
He takes it with him on hunting/camping trips and shoots a few rounds at a target for fun. Admires the rifle mostly.
Elk Hunting a couple of days ago, he was careless with a propane lantern and the whole camper went up in flames. (I'll post pictures when I get them)
Thankfully he's ok and the forest didn't catch fire. Camper and 99% of all hunting gear is lost. One gun and two bows lost in fire.
Anyways, here is what's left of the rifle after a hour in a fire. Think it will buff out?

I think it'll buff out. And now that it's been heat treated it will be even better.
Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad the old man is OK.

I know the whole thing sucks. But...the rifle looks kinda cool. Be a nice wall-hanger. You could make up all sorts of stories with that.

If he's an NRA member he has some free gun insurance. https://mynrainsurance.com/insurance-products/firearms-no-cost-armscare (although now it looks like you have to "activate" it first)

well, he is a lifetime NRA member, not sure if that carries the insurance or not. I'll mention it to him.
We'll probably send it off to Henry and see what they think. From the location of where it was in the camper and fire, it might not have gotten too terribly hot, just burned the wood off.

Glad he's OK
I'd send it back to Henry like you said. See what they say. Post back for an update. Good luck.
Bad deal but at least no one was hurt. Buy dad another Henry. Life goes on.
Like everyone said, glad your dad made it out safe. Now he gets all new year for next years hunt.
That rifle has a story now, and its fire worn. :P
Has a nice patinia. He just upped the value of it. Best thing is he wasn't killed or hurt.

Sad to hear that . . . but glad that it was only property that was hurt/damaged.
Agree with others about contacting Henry. Write up the story about what happened, why you bought your dad a Henry, etc. Maybe they can help or give a discount on a replacement, etc? Would be a good PR opportunity for them.

Glad he's ok. Get him another henry, a display mount for this one, and a bright LED camp-lantern.

Agreed. If I was in charge I would not only replace the rifle but would probably toss in a matching rifle for the OP as well.
Of course that might actually be a bad business move. If word gets out about it then every hillbilly schmuck that f**ks up his rifle will want a new one for free.

Hold onto that for the next time Denver tries one of those stupid gun turn-ins. In the meantime, it's an interesting wallhanger -- glad the only things lost were replaceable material items.
Glad your pops is okay--that's the important thing. The pics make me sad but sometimes there is hope (in the right hands).

Yep, all is good. Dad just left the lantern running and wandered to another tent for some food or something. Possible the wind rattled the camper a bit and it tipped over. They stepped out and looked up the hill and it was already blazing away. I should get a photo from one of them soon. Hunters (photographers) are on their way back to the midwest. Dad is heading back up with another friend to continue the hunt.
We'll see what henry has to say and then I'll look into purchasing another rifle. I'll post any newsworthy updates.
If one type of gun looks good case hardened, it's lever rifles!

Just rub some dirt on it

I was able to work the action enough to double check the chamber was empty, the tube was empty, so no cartridges exploded inside of it. Nothing appears to be "warped" from heat. The action might function ok after lots of oil and start taking things apart. We'll probably just leave it up to Henry to decide if it's worthy of a 2nd life.

When you contact Henry, provide them with that rifles serial number. It may help.
The bright side is you can get it in 45/70 this time.

Pops has emailed serial and details to Henry, waiting on their response.
he's also soaked the rifle with some oil and everything seems to be functioning reasonably well. There is hope!
Woof, 45/70. Price goes up doing that though!

This is exactly what came to my mind first. Perfect "gun buyback" submission. It didn't occur to me that Henry might replace it. That would be amazing.

We won't know for a week or so yet. Pops is out hunting again and won't be checking emails. We're hoping we can fund the wood replacement on the gun and they would re-work it (safety test, springs, blue) for minimal $. Fingers crossed!

Update: Henry says that if all the wood burned off it, the metal has most likely been annealed enough to scrap it. Wall hanger. RIP.
