View Full Version : Explosive Device Detonated in Nederland Shopping Center
I totally missed this one. Then again, I was in Boulder most of the day having a tooth pulled.
Investigators believe explosive device found at Nederland shopping center
The Boulder County Bomb Squad was confident that a device found inside a backpack outside the Nederland Police Department on Tuesday morning that prompted an evacuation of a shopping center had the capacity to be explosive.
"They are proceeding down that line with all due caution to make sure it is safe," Nederland Town Marshal Paul Carrill said.
The Caribou Ridge Shopping Center was closed all day Tuesday and remained evacuated as of 9 p.m., and two bomb squad robots were examining the backpack and its contents in the parking lot. The police department is located at the shopping center.
Carrill said a Nederland police officer coming in for the day shift at about 7 or 7:30 a.m. found the backpack and brought it inside the department after assuming it had been lost or abandoned — something that happens frequently.
"After he began inspecting the bag to determine ownership, he saw items consistent with items that may or may not be used for an explosive device," Carrill said.
He said the police department and the shopping center was evacuated and the bomb squad was called out. The bomb squad X-rayed the backpack twice inside the department before removing it from the building.
As of 9 p.m., officers with the bomb squad were using robots to X-ray a solid block found inside the backpack in an effort to identify what it was and how to dispose of it safely, be that detonating it on-site or taking it to another location, Carrill said.
He added that the bomb squad was "systematically dissecting" items in the backpack and had removed evidence that had been sent off for lab testing on Tuesday, although the results of the tests might not be available for weeks.
"Once they brought it out, two robots removed the contents in the parking lot," he said. "Items have been taken for analysis."
Carrill said that the incident has become a joint investigation between his department, the Boulder County District Attorney, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, the bomb squad, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Nederland Fire Protection District and the Boulder County hazmat team.
The Boulder Emergency Squad was also on scene.
"They are probably still several hours away from buttoning this up," he said at about 9 p.m.

They ended up detonating the thing at 1:30AM last night.
Damn... people should listen to Samsung when they say to turn the damn phone off.
"After he began inspecting the bag to determine ownership, he saw items consistent with items that may or may not be used for an explosive device," Carrill said.
WTF does that even mean?? So, the officer saw items in the backpack, and because these items looked like other items, but he didn't know if the items the items looked like could or could not be used to make a bomb, so we better call the bomb squad?

Hey, you know a bong and a bar of hemp soap can be used to make a helluva pipe bomb......

A local said there was a mason jar filled with "something" and it had nails, etc. sticking out of it. It was also connected to a cell phone with some wires.
This is unconfirmed, but it would make me need a change of shorts if I found it.

Just a clock, move along...
Well, we need a law against this kind of stuff or it will keep happening.
Maybe even restrict the number of nails that can be bought at one time and start checking IDs for jar (kids don't need jars).
In this situation of course a jar full of fasteners is alarming. In general, if we start detonating every mason jar full of nails/screws found, I know a whole bunch of middle-old men that are about to lose a garage/workshop.

Very disconcerting since I most of the people over there.

No kidding man. I know folks are making light of it because nothing happened, and that's cool. But this thing was found real close to the carousel that I take my daughter to. There's a day care next to the cop shop too, isn't there?
If this went off and killed folks, we'd be all over the news right now.
That nothing happened is a god send. This targeting of cops is crazy and has to stop. Have a grievance fine, this is not an acceptable way to take that up. Stay safe guys. I hope you catch this ass.

No kidding, oh and don't forget to put in another order for some more MRAPS and armoured personnel carriers.

You're on to something here. Great for plowing over the illegal hippie camps.[LOL]
Direct left side of the cop shop is a pre-school. Above is a diner. Right is a laundromat. Next to that is more innocents.
Not a good situation all the way around.
But this thing was found real close to the carousel that I take my daughter to.
For those not in the know, the owner of the Carousel of Happiness is a big supporter for PTSD miltary individuals. IE: A friend.

In case that's directed at me, I was merely poking fun at the quoted person's poor phrasing. I've been to that carousel and market several times; it would be awful if that became the scene of a domestic terrorist event.
Suspect arrested...

Authorities arrested a California man suspected of leaving a homemade explosive outside a police station in a small northern Colorado mountain town that failed to detonate.
FBI agents took David Michael Ansberry, 64, into custody in Chicago over the weekend, two law enforcement officials with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case.
[snip]
Very strange. "California man" build "device" in Colorado and arrested in Chicago.
Good work on the part of the Feds tracking that one down. Lots of missing details.

Nicely done.

Since the device failed to detonate, you could say his bomb making abilities fell short. [LOL]
David Michael Ansberry, 64, of California, was easily recognizable because he is 3 feet 6 inches tall, the two officials told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.
Is 6' 3 really so tall that it allowed this guy to be identified? Does 6' 3 look all that different than 5' 10 on a surveillance camera?
Also, I read both articles from the Chicago Tribune and the Denver Post, and there are at least two entire paragraphs with the exact same wording in each article. Are journalists really that lazy, or is that an accepted practice?

Many news articles are written by bots these days. More than you would think.

In Ned, the bomb was elevationally challenged. Should've gotten high first. Midget lives matter, dude!

Hey, at least they reported his name. If it started with "Mohammed" we still wouldn't know.
Way too many holes in this story. 3'6", on crutches, passing through... Something don't add up. When it absolutely has to blow, ATT is the best choice.
Visited by the FBI tonight, looking for leads that were not there.

Did he come by the friendly hardware place for some supplies?
Did he come by the friendly hardware place for some supplies?
Surprisingly not. He kinda stuck out in a crowd.
Still not making sense.
One theory is the suspect is a long time radical connected to a group that was in Boulder/area in the 70s called STP and there's a possible connection to the death of one of the members of that group in the early 70s by the then city marshal of Nederland.

Don't doubt it (f'ing hippies!), here's that speculation...
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2016/10/17/nederland-bomb-david-michael-ansberry/
The fact that his device was aimed at people who were likely not even alive at the time, let alone responsible for the 40 year old grievance, makes this especially evil. We joked at first because no one was hurt but this is serious and I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison (assuming he is tried/convicted of course).

This is Boulder Co. Sheriff Pelle's speculation. I have little to no interest in what he has to say. The story still makes no sense. There is a pre-school, laundromat, diner and carousel within distance. The midg. is revenging a 40 year old incident?
Word is that he didn't buy AT&T burners and therefore there was no reception.
Unless he is a Timothy McVeigh coward, I don't see a reasonable explanation.
Pelle is one of the people that are adhering to that line of thought. Lots of others do, perhaps that's where he heard it LOL.

The dwarf might get life for trying to use a WMD.
Look at this headline....LMAO.
Radical hippy dwarf, 64, is arrested after he 'tried to plant a bomb outside a police station' in Colorado town famous for its marijuana stores

Since when had Nedrrland been famous for its weed stores? That article is 100% fail.
