View Full Version : quick advice question - random
i just got a pelican 1720 case and want to put my spr and two pistols in it with some mags. i made a horrible picture to show the two ways i considered cutting out the foam to fit the guns. what do you guys think, which way should i go?
first or second?

Put the mags in on end so you can fit more in...

Watch out for objects being too close together resulting in weak thin foam that may get ripped out by use. Good Luck [Beer]
spread the handguns out a little farther. remember neverput them away wet. This will cause rust.
yeah i forgot the foam can get very weak if too thin. it should all fit fine, hopefully my electric knife will work sufficiently. ill post some pics when i get it done

If it's deep enough to put them in on end, couldn't you just stack them on top of each other and only have to cut one hole?

Your choice, I guess...

Nice setup, what did you use to cut those?
I thought you meant "on end" as in vertically. I was thinking, "That must be a deep case..."

I'd try to balance the pistols out with the weight of the rifle... so it's not too hard to carry... just a thought... looks like it would be front heavy and weird to carry that way... and if you have to open and reach for a gun in a hurry to know that all the grips are nearly in the same place without having to reach different locations for each weapon? :)
thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated. i went ahead and cut it out with the pistols facing each other and inverted. i could have put the mags in thin ways, but thought they were a bit easier to get out by laying them flat and stacking them. also, the pistols sat a little deep so i cut out a piece to set on top to better hold them in place, works well. ill post pics soon.
i used a cheapo electric knife to cut it out, seriously cut through it like a warm knife through butter. not even mild resistance. the only problem was i cut a little too fast so i have a few spots that aren't 100% straight but you can't even really tell. also, i was afraid of cutting it too small and not having space to fit the guns, so i ended up cutting it a smidge too big, but really it doesn't matter, its tight enough and they won't bounce around when the case is closed.

Neither are mine...on ARFCOM, in their AR-15>Slings & Other Accesories forum, there is a thread with people showing how they fit everything in their Storm cases...
you know on arfcom they talk about making some cutting tool for the foam, but i don't see why people don't use the electric knives. it was crazy how it just flew right through the foam, nice and neat too.
The tool they make IS an electric knife on a bench rig ;)
damn now I have to order a pelican case too...
Those are sweat setups.

me too! too bad I'm broke right now...
Yup even the mad money is running low. There have bee to many fun toys listed recently.
sure its an electric knife rig but it seems like way too much trouble and money for it. making a straight line and 90 degree angle isn't that hard with a handheld one. also, if you want a pelican cheaper check out my post in the buyer intel. i actually got the guy to ship the brand new one to me for $130, but don't tell him i sent you or told you because i kinda had to twist his arm for it. hes looking to get rid of them fast though
gave it a shot we'll see what he says.
well worst case scenario its like $150 which is still good. comes with all the paper work and all
I went for a deal on 2 a 1750, and a 1720, have to pamper my varmit gun too.

hope mine will turn out as well.
its not bad, need to erase the chalk marks, however you can buy replacement foam for semi cheap if you ever really botch it
I still have to get the electric knife
you can get one at target for 20 bucks and ill bet find a cheaper one at walmart or something
I'll probably stopand get one on the way home tomorrow.

Once you cut the outline with the electric knife, how do you get the foam out?
it just pops right out. honestly, it is not a difficult process at all, its exactly as youd think. trace the weapons in chalk or something removable, cut on the INSIDE of the chalk so its tighter, take your time unlike me, poke some slits with a sharp knife first so you can but the electric one in it, then the electric one just strolls right on through it, no catching or anything. its pretty solid foam.

I just did one for my new Varmint rifle. Used one of those cheap knives from Lowes that you can snap sections off the blade. Used the whole length of the snap off blade and it cut easy. Also look at Storm cases, that's what I bought. A little cheaper and a life time warranty(not on the foam :).
bought a 1720, and a 1750 so now I wait.
They shipped yesterday, I have to go get the knife now...
got them today now I just have to do the work.
by the way don't worry too much about messing it up, you can buy 3 new pieces for 60 or one for 20 on ebay.
