View Full Version : Cheapest place for car batteries?
So there's a zillion kinds of auto batteries, at least that many places to get them, and it's been about that many years since I've had to buy one. Now I have two that are acting goofy.
Any recommendations on getting the best prices for them? I've always just gone to Sears, but now I'm leaning towards Costco or WalMart. Don't need anything high-performance, just for a '07 Kia Sorento and a '00 Chevy Silverado.
Any place cheaper/better? I'm assuming Batteries Plus would be the LAST place to go, based on looking there before and the way I was treated.....
Thanks!
Of all the brands, I think there are only six or so manufacturers that produce for most of the brands. I think your idea of Walmart or Costco is right on. I'd check Amazon as well, just for fun, but Walmart will probably be cheaper.

The Wal-Mart EverStart MAXX is always highly rated by Consumer Reports. I don't know if it's cheap or not, but that's what I buy and they seem to work just fine. If you're used to Sears, i'd bet anywhere is going to look cheap.

Another +1 for wally world everstart. Cheapest I could find and they have good reviews.

There are only a few manufacturers of batteries. The EverStart MAXX is my 'go to' replacement. Not much more money than the standard battery and they've worked great for me.

Costco Interstate batteries have a 42 month full replacement warranty, vs 36 month for the walmart everstart maxx (prorated out to 72 months I believe). Both batteries are made by Johnson Controls.
I don't know about your personal experience at batteries plus but I bought my 2 batteries for my diesel there and 3 days before the warantee expired they replaced the pair because one was defective.

Checker batteries are higher end Deka re-branded. I've had great luck with those.
Napa, had some crappy luck lately with them, but they have covered them on pro-rated warranty.
Walmart ones I use for the vehicles I don't rely on daily.
I've had good and bad luck with the no-name battery places too. Not sure how many are in town, you'll just have to shop around.
YMMV.

Another +1 for Everstart.
I will never buy a Neverstart. Bad experiences with every one I've had. Most recently bought a car with one. It pushed a post out of the battery and leaked everywhere. Right at 1 yr old, bolted down correctly and all. Replacement started leaking within a month. This is a 3yr old vehicle with no aftermarket mods, both batteries were MAXX line.
The batteries I prefer are not cheap. Spent $265ish for the last one.

Costco or walmart are normally the cheapest. Unless you hit a good sale at an auto parts store.
I just purchased an Interstate from Costco for the wife's Suby. $80 net price with tax with a 42 month warranty for a 640CCA Group35(?).

CostCo is good for price, tho interstate batteries aren't what they used to be.
Harder to find things are found at American Battery in the Springs for a good price as well. That's the best I could find for my VW tdi battery.

Thanks all! Looks like Wally World it is. Two batteries at once for two old vehicles, don't want to spend too damn much. Don't need high tech or high performance.
The '00 Silverado wouldn't start tonight, had to put the charger on it. It may be traded in soon, even the wife is on board with getting me a newer truck. Cheaper batt the better.

If you're looking that cheap, the u pull it junkyards sell used batteries
I think Costco is cheapest. As I recall Sam's club, and I assume Wally world, will install them for you. If you get it at costco you have to install it and then bring back the old one for the core charge.

Home Depot... Not all of them have them so call first
No, I don't want used! And Home Depot has no business selling car batteries for cryin' out loud, or any other auto accessories. I used to work for HD, and had to deal with that stuff, a waste of space in that kind of store.
Turns out the battery needed for the Kia is an oddball, WalMart and NAPA both didn't even have p/n's for batteries for Sorentos older than 2011. Finally found one at an O'Reillys.

I didn't know you could rebuild a battery.
Looked on line and found the following link:
http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/restore-lead-acid-batteries.php
But if you look at the thread on Pro Tips, you will find the following advice from hghclsswhitetrsh:
"Because there's an instructional YouTube video that doesn't make you qualified or capable to do the job."
While it's not exceptionally old, the battery in my A6 went completely flat after being left to sit a few months in the car unused. I first assumed it would be completely wasted and in need of replacement.
The charger I have does have a desulfonation mode but wasn't initially able to start charging. After first pre-charging the battery a bit by connecting it to another running vehicle, the charger was able to begin the charge/discharge cycle and brought it back to life.
Now, who can tell me why the batteries in my 2004.5 CTD are still going strong <knock on wood>?
Just rolled over 60K.
Start cycles?

They may still "work", but how many CCA are they really putting out? Don't be shocked that everything seems fine until that really cold morning when they give up the ghost.
