What happens when a 1911 magazine goes bad?
Does it smash the last round up against the barrel?

I dont believe there is a set malfunction that occurs with a bad 1911 magaz8ne, or any magazine for that matter. But admittedly I dont have a great deal of time behind the 1911 series of handguns.

I have 4 magazines. 2 of the magazines destroy the last casing when it is ejected and 2 don't
So next question do I buy new magazines or just buy replacement springs?

Compare the feed lips to the good mags.

Take a good and bad magazine apart and compare the springs. Try swapping springs between magazines to narrow down the issue.

Measure the width between the feed lips front to back and compare to a good one.

Swap longer springs into the bad tubes and see if that fixes it.

What exactly do you mean destroy the last casing?

The slide jams the case up against the barrel. Major stove pipe

Case gets stuck 90 degrees from barrel with recoil spring pushing slide forward onto the case? Before or after firing. Could be an extractor tension problem

what 1911? Any modifications?

Pushs case forward against barrel after firing.
Pistol is a Springfield Champion -Target model only modification is a Clark national match barrel and put new springs in the pistol last week.
Clark barrel has been on the pistol 8 or 9 years.
What kind of extractor tension problem?

Weak magazine springs, letting the cartridge nose dive into the front of the magazine and hitting fed ramp and barrel.
Replace the magazine springs and possibly the followers. or get some quality magazines.

Unless you are talking a fired last case.

A picture of the malfunction could be helpful for all us Lazey Boy gun Smiffs.

6799367994I talked to a gunsmith and he told me how to take the extractor out and clean it. THe tunnel where the extractor fits was EXTREMELY full of fouling.
I think this might fix my problem. It looks like there was so much fowling around the extractor that it didn't have enough room to move, so it couldn't extract the casing all the way.
I will shoot the pistol tomorrow to find out.

Yhea, that's an extractor problem aggravated by a weaker (note I didn't say "weak") magazine spring. The extractor/ejector combo is supposed to flip the round out, rotating it about the case rim (extractor). If your extractor isn't working, the round rising out of the magazine below is the only thing that will eject the previous case, and in such a situation the case leaves the port more or less parallel to the barrel instead of being flipped out.

If the round in the magazine doesn't rise with enough authority, the slide's coming forward before the empty case gets out of the way.

Note that your magazine springs are probably just fine and well within spec. It just the softer of them showed up the extractor problem.

Extractor tension should be around 3.5-4.5 pounds. If you have a tiger gauge it is really easy, but if you don't you have to use your calibrated hand. Take the slide off the frame. Take a small string or fishing line and tie it around a dummy round with a loop on the bottom. Insert the round into the extractor. It should take around 3.5-4.5 pound of pull to free the round from the extractor. Also is your slide locking back on the last round?

Slide does not lock back.
Is it possible to buy a replacement extractor and not have to tune it. Just drop it in

There are NO drop in 1911 parts unfortunately. You will have to tune any extractor you buy. If you need assistants let me know. I'm concerned about the side not locking back.

Just ordered a Wilson extractor and new magazine springs
I watched 3 you tube video's on tuning an extractor. Wilson's video was the best
Nivek I really appreciate your help. You nailed the problem.

Could use an Aftec extractor which uses spring tension.

Why is this not an issue with the slide stop too. Or rather the follower not pushing it into place. I had this problem with a Desert Eagle. I get that it should eject either way. Just personal curiosity.
