View Full Version : Pistol mounted light?
While I'm sure there is a thread about this somewhere, I searched but couldn't find it and I figured there have probably been technological advances that make starting a new thread feasible.
Anyhow, I'm thinking of putting a light on a couple of my handguns and wanted to see who likes which ones these days.
Pretty sure I'd like something in LED, have no idea how many lumens is sufficient, would probably get one in black and one in FDE, don't need anything with lasers or anything else, and lightweight and durable are also desirable features.
School me up on the latest and greatest.
Thanks.
I like the Streamlight TLR-1.

Surefire x300. Not the cheapest on the market, but I've had excellent luck with mine and I've owned at least a dozen - one in particular that's seen well in excess of 10k rounds and is still going strong. I prefer the older models (prior to the Ultra) but the new ones come in tan, so that may be a plus for you. I've also never had trouble finding holsters that would fit a x300, which can't be said for some other offerings. YMMV, but I've been pleased with the lights for my needs (classes, night stand, mall ninja, looking cool etc.)
My buddy and I just got TLR1 HL from primary arms for $99http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161203/e399a04de1fe85ea49b6bedda9df58a2.jpg
My vote is for the Streamlight TLR-1. I have two TLR-1’s a TLR-2 and a TLR-3. The TLR-3 is smaller but I don’t like it because the battery type is a CRV. The TLR-2 and 3 (has laser) use CR123 and they tend to be easier to find, last longer and are generally cheaper to buy. I have seven of their flashlights as well and all of them use the CR123’s so it is good to buy batteries in quantity. Neve’s is a Streamlight dealer and repair facility, you can bring them back to them anytime you have an issue. They will send it in if they can’t fix it and it’s free for life. You don’t have to buy from them either, just a good place for service.

Another vote for the TLR1

can depend on the gun--for instance, the surefire X300U is a bright light, 600 lumens, but is longer than the frame of a full sized glock. Surefire makes the XC1, which is 200 lumens, but fits perfectly to the end of a glock 19, and is no wider than a 19.

The XC1 also runs on one AAA battery.
don't get me wrong, i love bright lights, but if your plan (to the extent we can make such a plan) is likely indoor use only, or at general handgun ranges, 200 lumens from the XC1 make it a compelling choice given it's size. streamlight makes a compact light called the TLR-6 that is similar in size to the Surefire XC1, but only 100 lumens (and less than half the price). I've not seen one in action, though, and 100 lumens may be cutting yourself short.

To those guys running the TLR-1's, have you ever mounted them on a rifle? I've seen interviews with folks that mount the X300U on rifles, but haven't heard much about the TLR-1 on rifles (as opposed to a flashlight mount or a side mounted light like the INFORCE)
Thanks. I'm planning on putting one on a Glock 19 and the other will most likely go on a Sig Mk25.
I know the TLR-1 is a popular light but is it an LED light? I think the TLR-HL is an LED but it seems like the rated lumens might be a bit overkill.

Yes, its an LED. I can't imagine an incan light that small with that lumen output

The TLR-1 is LED, they have different versions, the TLR1 is 300 lumens, the TLR1S is 300 lumens and has the strobe feature, the TLR1 HL is 800 lumens. I have the TLR1 and 1S but do not have the HL. Would imagine 800 lumens would eat batteries. I have an older Insight Tec M3 that is incandescent and it is not very bright and chews through batteries pretty fast. The TLR6 is made for the smaller guns that don’t have a rail, I forgot about them. I have two of them one on my Glock 42 and one for my Glock 43. The TLR6’s clamp on the trigger guard and aren’t very secure IMO. If you want to try a TLR6 I would give you a deal on a new one that I didn’t end up using. The TLR6 uses two totally different batteries that I have not priced yet. The TLR6 has the laser as well as a light. I don't believe Streamlight sell anything currently that isn't LED.
I have run TLR-1s on everything from Glock 9mm to SCAR .308 (rumored to kill some scopes) and never had a problem.
I'm guessing 300 lumens would be plenty for a pistol light. At least for me. I'll have to see if they offer the TLR-1 in a tan color.

TLR-1 here. I have four of them. I have a few on rifles and a few on handguns.

TLR-1. Seem like best price/performance ratio. Much better than the Glock light or the HK one. I have been thinking of putting one on my AR, but keep spending money on other stuff.
TLR-1 or X300. Be careful with high lumens indoors. I like a lower lumen light indoors, reduces the reflections off shiny surfaces especially mirrors, doesn't impact my night vision as much.

Had my SCAR H take out a polymer surefire in a mount. Tore the housing off at the threads. Threw a TLR1 on there and have had no issues since, actually, they are the only lights I run right now, got them on 2 glocks and 1 rifle. Have 1 TLR1 and 2 TLR1S'. I give them a big thumbs up.
I think there is no such thing as to many lumens/candelas the more the better. If you blind yourself at home it's kinda your fault for not knowing there's a mirror or reflective surface... I'd get the brightness light I could. I'm a surefire snob... so there my vote.

LOVE the TLR-1 HL. I have one on my nightstand gun and 1 mounted on a SBR. The light output on its own may be enough to stop a suspicious person or intruder dead in their tracks, but in case it doesn't, there's plenty of lead to back it up. ;)
I know this has been discussed in the past but I am a firm believer in the brighter the light the better. I have used the tlr 1 and the HL version at length both indoors and out and have never once thought "this is too bright."
Light dissipates quickly over distance. I want to be able to not only make out a man shaped object, but to see what that guy has in his hands at a good distance.
I will add another vote for the Streamlight TLR 1 HL. I have put thousands of rounds through it and had no issues.
