The local Colorado Springs news reminded everyone that with multiple military installations here in the Springs (esp Fort Carson and Cheyenne Mtn - which is all but boarded up) we are a major potential target for Al Qaeda.

Talk about inciting fear. After 9/11 it took months to re-assure everyone down here that we aren't a major target.

OK, this is smack dab in the middle of everything I've done for the last 11 years. I was a fed for the AF, AFOSI. I had routine access to this info and contributed a considerable share myself.

Military installations are very hard targets, and in the eyes of terrorists, considered too difficult and non-sympathetic as military personnel and bases are combatants. They are still targets, but not very high on their list. Run a truck full of explosives into Ft Carson (good luck with that) and blow it up and people will get mad but not shocked. Same truck, run it into a mall or a school, you see shock and fear. There are some other targets here in CO that they would not only get shock and fear, but the numbing effect they got with the 9/11 attacks and none of them are military centric.

There are much more lucrative targets in the USA than what we have in Colorado, never-the-less, we have our problems here in CO. Paying attention and looking out for suspicious acts is the best thing everyone can do.

In addition to what SA Friday said, I'd also add that terrorists tend not to think tactically or strategically, they tend to think in terms of emotional impact and propaganda value.

Blow up the gates at a military installation in Colorado Springs and the response from those on the coasts will be "meh ... just a bunch of red state rednecks ... no big deal" but blow up an office building in The Center of the Known Universe (aka NYC) and you get the world's attention.

And for those jihadi's that think a soft target NEAR the military targets here are all that soft, I have two words for them; Jeanne Assam!

I think we should become more extreme than the extremists. turn the entire desert into a glass exportation company after multiple nukes are released and turn all the fucking sand into glass.
The pot heads will be happy with their new bongs and hookah smokers and the liberals will be happy with their extravagant, priceless relics they can display in their homes and we will be happy to not deal with the terrorists any more which means the military won't use up all the ammo and ammo prices will drop to .01 cents a round for .50 cal!!!!![Beer]

Don't hold back Sniper7 ! I was just talking about the desert to glass scenario today.[Beer] Great concept!

Is this not news out there? I'm talking of the guy and his father held for lying to the feds and conspiracy type charges?

I both agree and disagree with much of what has been said (mostly agree). Yes, SA Friday (I KNEW the SA stood for Special Agent!) is dead on in that our bases here really are low value targets for the Bad Guys (BG). I also agree that we need to remain ever vigilant.

Now, others have pointed out that the BG's want to strike us where they will garner an emotional response. Here is where I think we are dismissing the possibility of attacks in CO too readily. I don't believe that the next strikes will be a couple/few high visibility targets.. The BG's know we're watching those closely. I honestly believe that the next attacks will be an orchestrated group of attacks all across the country. These will not just hit in LA, DC, NYC or Chicago. They'll also hit Mom-and-Pop-ville, USA...all over the country. They're going to want to make the point to us that we aren't safe anywhere. Malls, primary schools, colleges, sporting events - these will be the targets next time.

Though officially retired from active duty, by thought, attitude and actions I remain a member of the Defenders of the Force (Defensor Fortis).

ETA: I also agree with Sniper7... It's time we took off the damned gloves and got more extreme than the extremists. Growing up my mom used to tell me how she would handle these jihadists. I later found out that she got the idea straight out of General Blackjack" Pershing's toolbag:

Al Quada based training has always emphasized attacking multiple targets in mulitple places at the same time. It ramps up the impact to the general public that nobody is safe anywhere.

I don't like to talk about potential targets. I have done too many threat assessments in the past. I can't keep track of what was classified and what was in the media in that area. I don't like to put that stuff out there anyway.

In this current situation, I will say I would not be suprised if the plot was discovered by investigating suspicious purchases of industrial grade hydrogen peroxide.
