View Full Version : Zombies would wipe out the humans within 100 days
http://www.livescience.com/57407-zombie-apocalypse-would-take-100-days.html
The zombie apocalypse won't take long.A new article in a peer-reviewed student journal finds that the zombie hordes would take Earth's population down to a mere 273 survivors in 100 days.
The paper, published in the University of Leicester's Journal of Physics Special Topics, was a fanciful use of the so-called SIR model, which is used in epidemiology to simulate how diseases spread over time. It's not the first time zombies (http://www.livescience.com/23892-zombies-real-facts.html) have been used as a public health metaphor. In December 2015, for example, the British medical journal The Lancet published a tongue-in-cheek paper (http://www.livescience.com/53121-zombie-medical-journal-infectious-disease-spread.html) titled "Zombie infections: epidemiology, treatment, and prevention." And a viral blog post from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged zombie-apocalypse preparations as a a metaphor for real-life disaster preparedness (http://www.livescience.com/14240-cdc-zombie-apocalypse.html).
In the new analysis, the University of Leicester undergraduates assumed that each zombie would have 90 percent success at finding and infecting one human per day — a rate that would make the zombie virus twice as contagious as the Black Death, the plague that devastated Europe in the 1300s.

I think they're missing the real metaphor many of us use "zombies" for...
Zombie Apocalypse? You mean man-made population change.

[LOL]
Thread winner!

How long do all those Zombies "live?" Couldn't we just hike up into the hills where their muscle and tissues freeze?
each zombie would have 90 percent success at finding and infecting one human per day
That won't be constant. As time progresses the rates will drop. Those left will be the most difficult to infect.

Their model is just crap.... I think Irving is right, these are the same people behind the "climate change" models and the model is crap
at the end of the article:
In a follow-up paper, the students did just that. They extended the zombie life span to one year in order to up the challenge a bit, but also gave each human a 10 percent chance of killing a zombie each day. They also accounted for human reproduction, assuming reproductive-age women would be able to have a baby once every three years.
These assumptions provided some hope for humanity. Under this model, the human population rapidly dropped off to a few hundred again. However, the zombies died off after 1,000 days, under this model; 10,000 days after the beginning of the epidemic, the human population would start to recover again, the students found.
But assuming a constant chance of infection? these people are just bored and need a better hobby.
Also
"We have also not included the possibility for the humans to kill the zombies," they wrote.
Total hogwash
Just read the 10% chance of killing a zombie portion. I stand by my feelings of hogwash.
The residual risk of infection depends on how/if the virus could survive without a host. I think you're right, this is not science per se, it's more of a thought experiment and an exercise in epidemiology.

Clearly written by people that have only lived in cities/suburbs and don't realize how tremendously vast the world is and how many people live in BFE.

lol, Skip.
Zombies would make a huge dent in the population that doesn't believe in taking responsibility for their own safety. You know, democrats, trans genders, people from California, and college students.
With how fast news spreads on social media, that'd eliminate a big chunk of people "not knowing" and getting bit from ignorance. As Ray said though, you'd still have a big chunk of people that would choose to ignore it and be oblivious. The news would only benefit those ready to protect themselves.
Here's something to think about. What if there was an epidemic that spread through social media? That would probably take out a huge chunk of the world population in a hurry.

There is. It's called narcissism. Unfortunately this disease isn't strong enough to kill a meaningful number of its hosts.
Well, at least we'd have a cure for Liberalism.

I just looked in my garage and if I had someone to load for me, I figure I could take out about half of any zombies that might infect Ft. Collins before I had to bug out.

OMG they already have.

I this case, I would be incline to let the zombies wreak havoc for a while before I started killing them! Just sayin!!!!

We could put it on YouTube.

Big E3 - I like that strategy.
It all depends on the zombies. The walking dead types? I don't see how those overtook so much of the population honestly. You have to be a damn moron to get overtaken by one of those slow, thoughtless ones. Now the world War z types? That's a completely different story and I'm not sure how one would combat the speed, strength and relative intelligence.
In terms are readily available arms, the walking dead types could be effectively countered with semi automatic and even bladed weapons, world War z forget about it. Short of a belt felt with lots of ammo you'll have a real problem. Anyone that owns an armored vehicle at this stage though would look like a damn genius.
Speaking of which, the most ridiculous zombie decision in movies I can think of was in I Am Legend. You got a super smart, military guy. How do you not get an APC and park it in front of your house and sleep in there at night? No instead he sleeps in a mostly unrein forced house hoping they never find out he's there. Dumb.

We should meet to set out aiming stakes to ensure good overlapping fields of fire and to prevent blue on blue.
