Since we have a nice thread about Craigslist, I figured that there are probably some other great stories out there.

So let's hear them. The most "WTF?", the most "were you born this stupid?" the most "you expect me to do WHAT?" stories you have.

Ever had someone say "Sure I'll sell you X. Just meet me in the dark alley at midnight, alone, and bring cash." Ever had someone change the price on you at the last minute? Sell an item you drove 400 miles to buy? Try to sell something that is obviously, blatantly "hot?"

C'mon, let's hear them!

I don't really want to talk about it.....

I've actually never really had any problems of craigslist

My brother bought a cummins to replace the old motor in his truck, and so we loaded up in my truck, went and looked at it, haggled and closed the deal. We then were loading up the motor, and as soon as the tailgate on my truck was closed, he was gone. Hopped on his bike and took off. We hadn't even gotten back in the truck.

This doesn't necessarily sound strange in and of itself, but the fact that he left the garage door open, the lights on, tools out and on the floor, and the engine crane on the driveway slab.

We didn't have a clue what was going on, so we left, and then as we were talking about it, realized the guy may have not actually been the owner. Long story short, did some checking with local authorities, and posted on CL to see if anyone had a cummins stolen out of their garage.

No one ever came forward, but I'm still not convinced the guy was the actual owner. On the up side, the motor runs well.

Had a motorcycle up for sale, and got offered "special consideration" if I would accept the lowball offer of $1k less than I was asking...

I'm happily married, and not really into random hook ups, so that was a no.

Sold some stuff and got counterfeit bills for it. Went to the bank and got to explain why I was "trying to pass bills". Luckily, I've had the same savings account since I was 5, and quite a bit of the staff knows me, and it didn't go anywhere beyond being out $400 and giving a statement to the "authoritahs"...

Tried to buy a bass guitar from a guy, sent an email asking when we could meet up. I wasn't even going to haggle.

No response. Tried to get in touch with him for 3 days.

Saw he relisted the bass at a lower price, still no response. No phone number, no nothing.

Posted a wanted ad, looking for that specific model of bass, and guess what? Jack hole contacts me saying he has it for sale. Gave me the original price, so I sent an email back saying "thanks, but no thanks", went and found a different bass with someone who actually wanted my money.

Craigslist is a crap shoot. I've gotten some screaming deals on CL, but you have to be willing to weed through the 'tards.

i sold a non-running (fully disclosed) GMC Sierra that I had parked on the street sort-of on the side of a neighbor's corner lot. The guy was sure he could get it running--for a day and two nights there was a crew of mexicans trying to get that dang truck working. I actually considered calling to get it towed at that point, as i was getting the stink-eye from some of my neighbors (to which i replied--it's not my truck--do what you need to do). i still don't know how they got it out of there--running or whether it was towed.

I sold a 2001 ford escape (with a built in stupid fee) to a very nice family. this thing was notorious for eating coils, and they were expensive to replace. it would run, but idle very roughly. they didn't haggle. they didn't negotiate. they just handed over the cash. they didn't take it for a test drive. it was in a garage downtown, so they didn't even see it in the sun. i offered to drive them in it if they didn't want to. no dice. i sorta felt bad about taking the full price

i was selling 3 very-good-shape tires. i figured i'd sell 2, and get stuck with one. first day, a lady wants one. i actually left a rockies game to meet her (yes, big loss). i do all my meets in a home depot parking lot. she says "i've only got $100 bill"---sorry, i don't make change--don't even take cash with me to an exchange. she goes in and gets change (i think i was asking $70 for the tire)--she sorta did a bit of the grifter hand razz-a-ma-tazz and handed over the money. later, i saw i only had $50 in my pocket

Sold a plasma tv a while back and was offered special consideration multiple times, weed and to donate it for a charity...

Sold a motorcycle and this really short, stocky lady shows up. She can barely touch the ground when she sit on the bike... i tried to advise her that it wouldn't work for her but she insists on a test drive... i get her cash, and make her sign a temporary bill of sale, and she gets on the bike and almost wipe out before the end of my driveway.... i tell her its not a good bike for her, give her back her money. 3 days later she shows up, asking if i could pay for her medicsl expenses since she hurt her ankle on my bike! I pull the BOS where in really small print at the bottom i have all the necessary disclaimers i could imagine... never heard from her again, never sold another bike on CL.

I bought a lap top off Craigslist and one of the guys that I inquired with had a bunch of laptops that were locked and he didn't have the password. Uhh, no thanks dude.

One time I about got into an argument with a lady over whether I had paid her already or not (I talk a lot and get off track). Turns out I hadn't and felt pretty stupid.

she may have the better "funniest/most bizarre/scariest" story from that exchange. "this one time i was selling soiled unmentionables and this guy said he paid me...."

seriously--a secretary in my office would sell her used underwear to the sniffers on CL (and not make any secret about it). would go down the elevator from the office, stand on the street, and someone would drive up and hand her cash. apparently, the gamier the better. extra for menstrual stains.

That's a thing. I've looked into it. There is now a website just for that purpose that isn't even on the dark web. People will send you underwear to wear and everything.

1. Remove plates when you sell the car. No promises by the buyer they'll bring them back. I had State Patrol call months after selling a car when the buyer didn't return the plates. he never re-registered it and state patrol thought it was stolen.

2. Some insurance companies cover the car for 30 days after the private sale. FYI. Guy can go smash it and you'll be on the hook insurance wise. (the last I was told anyway)

I've always had good luck selling my cars just by parking them in the driveway 4 sale. High volume corner, mexicans always buy them. Knock on door... TWO EIGHT ZERO ZERO for van? (big roll of cash in his hand) Yep, sold. Didn't even want to go for test drive.

Sold a truck once. 6 Guys pull up in 6 trucks. No plates on any of them. One speaks English, they offer cash and want to know if it will make it to "Mexico tonight". Yup, should get there no problem. Gone. Apparently they load them all onto a 18 wheeler at the Texas border somewhere and haul them across in one batch.

No "crazy" stories though. I did have one guy BOLT in a big hurry once the cash was in his hand. I was slightly scammed, wasn't much money. Lesson learned.

I sold a topper that I had on my truck when I no longer wanted it. I was pretty specific about what type of truck this thing fit. A guy says he wants it and comes by in his truck which is a totally different make and model than the truck I had the topper on. He wanted me to take it off my truck and put it on his to "see if it fits".

Nope. Ain't going to happen. If it comes off my truck and on to yours you just bought it and I don't care if it fits or how it looks.

He actually agreed to my terms, paid me, we swapped it over to his truck, it didn't fit right, he did manage to get it sort of clamped down and off he went.

On a related note, I had that topper listed for weeks for free because I just wanted it gone. Had quite a few people who wanted it but nobody would show up to get it.

A coworker told me to list it for sale with a price. I didn't understand how I could get money for something I couldn't give away for free but since he is a much more seasoned Craigslist veteran than me I gave it a try. Sold it two days later for $150.

He said if it's listed for free people will either get excited about getting it and then later change their minds or they will think there must be something seriously wrong with it and won't even contact you. But, if you set a reasonable price they will think they are getting a bargain and buy it.

Weird.

I've learned that if I want something gone at my house, I just put it on the curb with a "FOR SALE/SE VENDE" sign and it usually gets picked up over night.

If it's the same as at our house, it sits for weeks with a free sign, but is gone in 24-48 hours with a "for sale" sign.

Implied value makes junk more desirable.

There's also just the fact that all "free" stuff is lumped into one category on CL, so if someone is shopping and they're not looking in the "free" section they won't see it.

I sold a Motorcycle on Craig’s List this past summer and it wasn’t worth the headache. I got a tidal wave of Scammers, Crazy low ball offers, or complete time wasting responses verses real inquiries. It was literally a 20 to 1 ratio of bullshit to real inquires. I eventually sold the bike to an upstanding CL buyer but I don’t think it justified the torrent of retardedness to get there. The ability to sell things for “Free” on Craig’s List isn’t worth the headache. At least not to me.

I have purchased a few things off of Craig’s List with mixed results. For the majority of the transactions it went smoothly. But there are some flaky nut cases out there that can waste a lot of your time.

Here is a flaky nut case time waster CL story……

I found a motorcycle I wanted to buy from a guy on CL. Contacted him and checked out the bike in person. We negotiated and agreed on a selling price, shook hands on the deal and then planned to work with our banks to officially close the deal. The next day the guy calls me and says he isn’t sure about selling it and needs time to think about it. I give him a week to think about it and he says yes to the deal again with a slight bump in the negotiated price. I agree to the price bump and schedule a time with my bank to do the closing and he no call no shows the meeting. I tried calling him a bunch of times that day but couldn’t get in contact with him. I finally hear back from him a week later and he has all of these excuses about being busy with work and still not sure about wanting to sell it. He once again agrees to sell the bike at the agreed price and I setup another closing date with the bank a week later. He then cancels the day before the closing. He finally fesses up that he really didn’t want to sell the bike all along and was just seeing if there was interest from others in buying it. This whole monkey show wasted a month of my time not to mention time taken off work to hammer stuff out with my bank. All the while the bike was still listed on CL and he was still taking offers on it from others.

Not my own story, but I have a coworker who lives in Brighton, and occasionally will sell stuff on CL. When the buyer is from somewhere far, like Castle Rock, the Springs, or even Parker he'll tell them that he lives in Brush and wants to meet half-way, like oh say in... Brighton! He's kind of a dick. [LOL]

Free sales on Craigslist only happen one way. Put the ad up but list "as is" and "will be on the sidewalk, first come first serve. Don't contact me. When it is gone I will take this ad down". Put said junk on the curb, ignore any email, eyeball it occasionally until it disappears.

I refuse to talk to some dork over a free sale. Just come get it.

If that doesn't work for some reason, relist with a dollar amount sufficient to cover my wasted time in beer, but still "first come first serve, I will not hold it" lingo. I don't have sympathy for all the sob stories that erupt.

I've been trying to by a couch on CL. First couch is Sr citizen owned and pics are nice. Text the lady and her husband had cleaned it and took all the finish off the leather but she will give me a good deal. No thanks. 2nd one I call the lady and she is a total air head. I tell her I have cash in hand, but she had a lady in line before me that will be over in 4 days to look at it. Couch owner will call me back if the first buyer doesn't want it. Three weeks go by and the owner texts me that the first buyer didn't want it. I say I will come by in the afternoon and look at it. Then she is like the cat just scratched it up better send you pics. Scratched to hell. I tell her no thanks. 3rd couch text the person and the response is that the cat just scratched it up and can I send pics. I say I'm.... No thanks. Still no couch.

Thanks for the Grauburger posting. Made me laugh.

My experience was really strange.
I listed a console safe for a Tahoe I had traded off. Was asking around $100
Got a response from Illinois that the buyer would send me the money and a friend would pick it up.
It had been listed about a week without any real action.
I said sure, when his check cleared, his friend could meet me and get it.
He sent the check to my P.O. Box. $1,500
His number had been disconnected, but I got a call from a different number. He said cash the check, keep $200, give the console safe and $1,300 to his friend.
I googled the bank on the check and it was in Virginia. The address and company name on the check was in South Carolina.
No phone number on the check. Googled the company and called - no answer.
I got another call from the buyer from another number (the second number was disconnected) asking if I had cashed the check and could his friend get the console safe and cash.
I said no, I could not accept his check and had sent it back to the originating company. He called a couple more times from a 4th number, which I did not answer.
No further calls.
I did sell the console safe to another buyer within a couple of days.

I've sold several things and bought a couple from Craigslist, no real issues.

A few years ago I sold my pickup truck which I put everything on it that I knew, including a small rust spot (which wasn't visible, but I knew was there) on the door and a broken light behind the dashboard, The tires were also getting close to replacement. Otherwise the truck was tip top. I bought the truck used but it had low miles and ran great. I had installed a hitch on it but never put a trailer brake on it and never towed anything. My goal was to get a ATV or two and do so but never did. When I put it on Craigslist I got a lot of replies. I met with the first guy who low balled the crap out of me because the tires only had 7500 to 10,000 miles left. I passed on his offer. The next guy called me and seemed very interested asked me a ton of questions and started arranging a time to see it. He had to call me back and did so the next day or so and asked even more questions about the hitch. I said well it would need a trailer brake or light set up before you tow anything as there is no electrical for the hitch yet. Then he proceeded to tell me that if he bought it and I lied he would show up to my house with a gun. I actually very calmly informed him that I am a police officer and a firearms instructor and if he showed up in front of my house with a gun to do me harm he would be found in front of my house when the police arrived. He hung up. Two days later he called back apologized for his comment and said he was still interested in the truck. He arranged a place to meet nearby my house (less than a mile) and never showed. I sold the truck to a very nice maintenance worker who paid nearly full price.

I was up in denver a couple months ago and wanted to check out a truck on craigslist. Price was right for the description. Guy on phone said truck was at auto shop where it was getting detailed and we agreed to meet there about 7pm. I showed up, and waited, did a walk around and truck was unlocked... OK. Guy shows up in a truck with a whole crew of 4 others. Hands me keys but doesn't get out. I walk over and try the keys, they work the door, but the battery on the truck was dead. Go back over to the "Owner" and tell him battery was dead. One of the crew asks if I have the money. I let him know I didn't get a chance to get to the bank. Another crew member says we'll meet in the morning, they'll bring a new battery, I bring the cash and we'll do the deal. Now the whole time my spidey senses have been going nuts, even when checking the truck, I never took my eyes of the "Crew". I let them know I'll call them in the morning if I'm still interested and we leave it at that. Never called back. Pretty sure if I'd mentioned or flashed cash, I would of been rolled that night.

Thats a scary situation and pretty clever. They know the area, plant the car with a dead battery so you cant get away in it and you dont know that til you're out of your car. Bring your crew and you can have easy targets all day/night long.

This is why I would never buy something off of CL that had to be financed or that already was financed. I did it exactly once (sold my '04 Tacoma while I was still paying for it) and while it worked out OK, it was a real hassle.

Now I wait until my vehicles are paid for and I have a clean title in my hand and THEN sell them. Makes it much easier and simpler.

OK, here's another question: we sold the old washer and dryer for $100 back in January and the guy walks up and hands me a $100 bill. Now I've heard that there is a lot of counterfeiting going on and obviously if you're going to counterfeit, you might as well make it a big bill, right?

Near as I can tell our bill was genuine (at least the bank accepted it) but it got me to wondering....

It occurred to me that buying and selling on CL would be a good way to spread counterfeit money around since it's usually cash transactions with strangers. So does anyone use one of those "counterfeit detector" pens to make sure the bill is genuine?

Except I've heard that there are now some sophisticated counterfeiters who make bills that will pass the "pen test".

I've actually seen more small bills being counterfeited, $10 and $20. Sometimes a $100. Smaller bills are less suspicious. If you use a pen I have been told the counterfeiters are putting chemicals on the bills to make the pen take longer to show effect or not work at all. I always check for the security strip. It will tell you the actual amount of the bill you have...say if a $10 bill was bleached and turned into a hundred dollar bill. The security strip will still say $10. Most bills I have seen are obvious in a number of ways though.

Actually, I have used the pen the last couple of years. A friend gave me one he had picked up from his bank.
I saw the story on 60 minutes or somewhere saying that some counterfeiters have found a way to fool the pen.
I am thinking I will print out the other ways of detecting fake money - fibers, printing, etc.
I am interested in what others do.
Thanks for bringing this up.

Listed my car on CL. Older gent schedules a time to inspect it. We take it on a test drive and he seems real interested. Tells me he will contact me tomorrow after he talks to his mechanic friend about issues he should be aware of for year/make/mileage of car. Calls the next day asking me to lower the price by $X due to the serpentine belt belt needing replaced. My car had a timing chain not a serpentine belt. Ended up selling car to a young Latino whose parents came along with and brought stacks of $100's (not counterfeit).

CL's and Armslist = wasted time, wasted emails, wasted texts... ARGH!

I do, always. Even for a $20 deal.

I accepted 84 $100 bills for my jetski's and checked every damn one of them before that trailer got hooked up.

FYI, I use the chemical/UV pen. The silver strips in the bills glow a specific color for each denomination.

Oldest CL scam there is. Some will even setup their freight forwarder to come pick up an item, making it all seem legit.

Your bank might actually release funds and you think it's OK, but that sucker will bounce around the Fed for a while and then get rejected. You're now on the hook for the $$$.

Calls the next day asking me to lower the price by $X due to the serpentine belt belt needing replaced. My car had a timing chain not a serpentine belt.
A car can have a timing chain and a serpentine belt. The timing chain drives the cams. The serpentine belt drives the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump, etc..

In Parker there are spots in the Police parking lot for you to conduct CL business. Always video going. Anywhere else they do this?

This Monday. There was a dude to wanted to buy a hockey Helmet. He emailed on last Fri saying that he lives in Centennial, and wanting to pick it up on Mon.
He came to pick it up on Monday, and he was on a scooter! He said that it took about 2 hours to ride all the way to Thornton. He same to pick it up with his gf or wife on the back of scooter! :D
It was funny and cool.
