View Full Version : Exploding target starts another wildfire
The 40,000 acre fire currently raging in Arizona was started by an off-duty Border Patrol agent who was recreationally shooting at exploding targets. He tried to put it out, called it in, and turned himself in. Sure would like to see these things permanently banned in Colorado.

If we build the wall, the fire will stop there.
I guess I look at it from a different view. I don't like seeing anything banned. That tends to lead to additional bans...and we have plenty of enemies who want it all banned.
You will never legislate a perfectly safe environment. Accidents can and will always happen. The thing to do is teach people how to *try* to be safe and what to do if there is a problem. Sounds like this guy tried to be responsible. He tried to put it out and when that wasn't effective he called it in.
I saw a news report the other night that there was a car accident...do we ban driving just because of an accident?

me either, bans end up growing.
however, I think their are too many knuckleheads that believe that shooting them absolutely cant start a fire. we have some like that here.
Banning cars might be a good idea though. I mean..."Think of how we would end up lowering our carbon footprint." Who doesnt want that??

-Bic lighters and matches as well, let's ban those too!
I shoot exploding targets all the time, never had an issue. We buy the stuff 50lbs at a time.
You cant legislate the stupid away.
Do you also want to ban ARs because one was used to kill folks in a movie theater?
From the link:
The Green Valley News is reporting that several sources they spoke with said a target shooter using exploding targets started what became the Sawmill Fire 8 miles east of Green Valley, Arizona. The shooter reportedly tried to put out the fire, but after he failed he called to report it. The officials in charge of suppressing the fire have not confirmed what caused it.
Sounds legit

Less brush for the crossers to hide in, amirite!?

Agreed, stupid will always find a way. I get the slippery-slope argument too. But I don't see how explosives fit under 2A.
Out there in Bennett, you're probably good to go most of the time (that major fire north of you was apparently a welding mistake).
Wildfires can be far more devastating than any dumbass shooting up some place. Until Hayman, wildfire was barely an issue in Colorado. Now we've been evacuated for a major fire and have been on notice multiple times--friends up by Ned lost their home just last year (yes, a Bic lighter and young dumb).
I admit I'm overly sensitive about wildfire. But beyond your jollies, why do you need incendiary targets? I put those dumbass sky lanterns in the same category. I've got no problem with non-incidiary.

Ok, lets take 2A out of my example.
You dont have a right to drive a box truck. Lets ban 'em.
I figure that transient camps should be much higher on your list, especially in your area. The risk of fire using Tannerite or other exploding target properly is slim. However, we have had fires caused by simply shooting a sheet metal can a few times.
There are several different "exploding targets". People need to research and know if the mix they use is flammable or not... That's all I'll say on it.

I look at from another point of view I live in the mountains and people from the front range drive near my house and shoot tannerite thanks cause fires and puts my home and family in jeopardy.

Front rangers also have campfires near your house and we all knows campfires have caused large forest fires in the past so now what do we do? Ban exploding targets but not campfires?

Ban it all! Ban knives! Ban cars! Ban guns! Ban fire! Ban Tannerite! Then nobody will find a way to cause harm to others....

One of the large fires back home that threatened the town I lived in was started with a lawnmower hitting a rock

I left out lawnmowers, BAN THEM, then we'll be safe.

Unfortunate situation for everyone involved. Wish I had a real solution to offer.

Weekend before Fourth of July every year fires are banned no matter the weather to keep the flat landers from burning down the local community

Your rights end when your actions threaten others. Cars get hit with shrapnel from tannerite on 67, people shoot over the hill at south site all the time and rounds are landing on private property (around homes) and let's not forget the fires. Ask for whatever you want but it will be banned. People in this mountain community are sick of the trash dump called south sight oh wait that's the place people go shooting that was a forest. This is my home if these actions continue no matter how much you want to shoot on public land it will be shut down
Let's ban stupid people.........

You are about 10000 times more likely of having a fire near your home from someone smoking than from any sort of shooting.
I blame it on global warming. Ban global warming!

Only you can prevent forests....

We can't have people rubbing sticks together, ban those too.
Conifer forests burn. It's part of their natural lifecycle. Better ban them too.
Fire extinguishers. Carry one.
