The Solar Eclipse is on August 21. Parts of Wyoming and Nebraska will be in the path of the total eclipse. Is anyone going? any interesting plans or ideas?

We're going to try to see it in Alliance, Neb.

The path of total eclipse is about 175 miles south of us. It'll be near total here, but not quite. I'm working during the day so I'll definitely have a chance to see it assuming the sky is clear...which it most likely will be. Should be cool.

I was thinking about it, but 2 star hotels in the area are charging $1200+ for the night. I'll probably just get up early and bring some energy drinks with.

I wasn't too concerned about it and then someone brought it up because he had been in a hurricane evacuation in Houston, said it could take 6x longer than normal to travel, and in Wyoming the authorities are very concerned. I have heard that they are having meetings with the locals telling them to gas up and have plenty of supplies. I don't think its going to turn into mad max, but there are concerns.

If you look online you can find references to the logistic concerns. Here are some too:

I gotta be at work, but I'll be out there with my welder helmet on just like in '89 or whenever that was for us here.

It's total bullshit that those little hotels up there in WY took reservations well in advance (like a year), ....but then realized why they had been made, and then butt jacked everyone that already had them.

Fukkers.

Some are taking it really seriously:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Gov. Kate Brown is authorizing the Oregon National Guard to deploy soldiers to help deal with an influx of tourists during next month's total solar eclipse.

Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that the National Guard will stage six aircraft and about 150 soldiers and airmen ahead of the Aug. 21 celestial event.

Some airlines are getting into the game, too, offering special "eclipse flights" along the path.

We may or may not do the same.

If you mean Scottsbluff the places I like are Rosita's (beef panchos) Taco Town (combination platter w/ taco fried light) Taco De Oro (also combo platter) & El Charrito (combo platter or enchilada plate) are the places I like. Probably in that order. All are great. Authentic Mexican food joints started by migrant workers who moved to ScoBlo to work the fields & stuck around. When I tell people that some of the best Mexican food I've had in the world is in Scottsbluff NE they look at me like I just kicked their dog. I have yet to take someone back & have them disagree with me after trying for themselves though.

Officials Warn Consumers Of Counterfeit Tickets Ahead Of Solar Eclipse (http://www.theonion.com/article/officials-warn-consumers-counterfeit-tickets-ahead-56506)

WASHINGTON—Saying the agency has already detected numerous instances of the fraudulent activity, the Federal Trade Commission warned consumers Friday to watch out for counterfeit tickets being sold to the upcoming solar eclipse. “We advise people to be on the lookout for unauthorized agents selling fake paper and/or electronic tickets to the total solar eclipse on August 21,” said Thomas Pahl, acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, explaining that an estimated 5,000 phony tickets to the astronomical phenomenon have already been sold through outlets such as Craigslist and eBay, with prices ranging from $25 for general admission passes to thousands of dollars for bogus “all-access” VIP packages. “Unfortunately, this kind of scam isn’t uncommon with must-see events like this one. While we’re doing our best to crack down on these sham vendors, we want to remind everyone that caution is always the first line of defense. None of these tickets will be honored, and no refunds will be given.” Pahl went on to remind consumers that official eclipse tickets can be purchased exclusively through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com/eclipse.

Think of the costs that will be incurred from all the trash that low class people will leave behind....roadside bathroom activity, the trash that inconsiderate people leave behind them, etc. etc. I'll bet many local folks are significantly pissed off when the whole deal is over with. Yeah, some small businesses will gain some profit, but the mess afterwards will leave an equal impact for sure.

The eclipse will be a field day for home burglars! Millions of people leaving and posting about it on social media.

Lots of towns in the direct path, like Sun Valley, ID, are having emergency meetings this week to plan for the onslaught; presumably this is happening elsewhere. They're warning residents to stock up on food and fuel because they know they can't handle it. Highway mayhem is assured.

I'll be rafting for a week on the Main Salmon river, far from the madding crowds, (merely 98% totality, somehow I think we'll enjoy it). [House protected but seems unlikely evil-doers frequent this forum.]

Keep in mind, 1-99.9999% is mildly interesting. There's a world of differnce between 99.9999 and 100%.

So if you think you'll get 92.4% of the effect with a 92.4% eclipse, you're wrong.

Fair point, though I think that technology has improved to the point where the weather predictions (when you're closer to the actual date) are within reason. Like, if they predict rain, it'll probably be cloudy at a minimum, that sort of thing.

I got to see the one in 1984 when I was in Houston, TX. The thing I remember most was the change in the shadows on the ground - their were two separate shadows on top of each other and slightly offset - weird.

Here's an article on hotel prices in the path: http://captaincapitalism.blogspot.com/2017/08/solar-eclipse-causing-insane-hotel.html

Good luck to those traveling for a better view.

Also, make sure your kids don't burn their eyeballs

As an Optometrist , I want to express concern that I have about the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug 21. There are serious risks associated with viewing a solar eclipse directly, even with the use of solar filter glasses. Everyone should keep in mind if they or their children are considering this.

We have to keep in mind that some people will encounter the inability to control every aspect of this exercise. For instance, true solar eclipse glasses are made for adults, do not fit children well and should not be used without direct parental supervision. If the solar glasses do not filter out 100% of the harmful UV rays, if they are not used absolutely perfectly, or should there be a manufacturing defect in any of them, this will result in permanent and irreversible vision loss for any eye exposed. Just like sunburn to the skin, the effects are not felt or noticed immediately. I have a great fear that I will have patients in my office on Tuesday, Aug 22 who woke up with hazy, blurry vision that I cannot fix. It is a huge risk to watch the eclipse even with the use of solar glasses. There is no absolutely safe way to do so other than on TV.

The biggest danger with children is ensuring proper use without direct parental supervision. As the eclipse passes over many places, including Columbus, the moon will not block 100% of the sun. Because so much of its light is blocked by the moon, if one looks at it without full protection, it does not cause pain as looking at the sun does on a regular day. Normally if you try to look at the sun, it physically hurts and you can’t see anything. During an eclipse, however, it is easier to stare for a bit….and even less than 30 seconds of exposure to a partially eclipsed sun, you can burn a blind spot right to your most precious central vision. With solar glasses you can’t see ANYTHING except the crescent of light of the sun. Kids could have a tendency to want to peak around the filter to see what is actually going on up there. One failure, just one, where education and supervision fail, will have such a devastating consequence.

"On April 8, 2024 some of the best viewing areas for this rare and mesmerizing astronomical event will cut right through the Lone Star State. A total solar eclipse will run nearly straight through the Alamo City skies and through the middle half of Texas. "

Time to make reservations near the Alamo, watch the eclipse from there and then head to the River Walk for the people viewing!

I'm hoping if we leave right after, we'll beat most of the people headed back West leaving from Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, Lincoln, etc. I was originally planning on heading out Sunday, but I'm hearing a lot of people telling me to come Saturday instead if I don't want to end up in a parking lot. Hoping it's worth 12 hours in the car for 2.5 mins...

The DOT signs on 25 are advising drivers to plan on long traffic delays, starting friday. We decided to stay here, between boarding the pups, fuel and food for a 2-3 day trip. Plus who knows how many people on every north/south road. The 4-5% difference in totality isn't worth the hassle

Important Information about Solar Eclipse Event

CDOT Team:

In preparation for the upcoming eclipse event, we as team CDOT need to take the following steps in ensuring that we do all we can to keep the traveling public safe and moving through our roadways:

1) Engineering/Construction: No CONSTRUCTION OR LANE CLOSURES ON MAINLINE (work off mainline that doesn’t impede flow of the roadway can continue at this time) 8:00 p.m. (sundown) 8/18 through 8:00 p.m. (sundown) 8/22 for the following roadways:

a. I-25 US-24 (Colorado Springs) to Wyoming border

b. I-76

c. SH-287

d. SH-71 Limon to Nebraska Border

e. I-70 SH-9 to SH-71

f. Other closures as additional data develops or at the discretion of the Regional Transportation Director

2) Maintenance/Operations: No oversize permitted vehicles from 8:00 p.m. (sundown) 8/18 through 8:00 p.m. (sundown) 8/22 on all state highways north of HWY 24 to the KS line (this includes I-70), and all state highways east of HWY 9 to the WY border. This restriction does NOT apply to:

a. Permitted LVC combinations;

b. Permitted vehicles that are overweight ONLY and are able capable of maintaining a minimum speed of 40 mph on a flat grade. (This includes such permit types as Non-Interstate Overweight Divisible load and Annual Overweight permits.);

c. Oversize/Overweight permitted loads where the width of the vehicle/load does not exceed 14’, between the hours of . Vehicles must meet all lighting requirements as directed in 2 CCR 601-4.;

d. Permitted OSOW vehicles operating on non-interstate state highways solely within the boundaries of a local municipality. Operation on local roadways requires the authorization of the local jurisdiction.

We will be standing up the emergency management structure for the weekend. This means the incident commander (to be named) will be in charge of our response. Regular calls for identified staff will occur starting at and throughout the weekend into the following week. Operations will be tracking congestion, incidents, and flow to update signs to advise traffic as appropriate.

We at CDOT will do everything we can to make sure that thousands of people can move as safely as possible to and from the eclipse path.

Thank you to all staff and remember to be safe,

Joshua Laipply
Chief Engineer

If there's massive traffic jams and someone dies in an accident, due to emergency responders unable to get to them. Who will you blame?

25 is a parking lot for bronco games, this is (for some) a once in a lifetime event. I know a family (with paperwork) from south of de border who drove here for it. Think they're the only people from out of state, or the country heading north?

My wife and I decided years ago that we will vacation on non-holiday times and spend holidays at home. I hate fighting the herds. I am fine seeing a 96% eclipse from town. I don't have any illusions that 4% additional will be a life changing or spiritual event for me. And even if it was a self-redefining moment, it would all be washed away during the road battle to return home highlighted by flipped birds, gnashed teeth and ulcerific traffic.

Sounds like a good plan, that is what we do as well, also why I like days off during the week.

We celebrate a holiday on the day that works for us. For example, we celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday, as it gives us a whole day to prep food and kids get to go to significant others families, then everyone is at our place at once. Birthdays are always celebrated on the weekend before or after, and the birthday person gets the whole weekend instead of one day. Little things like that make life so much less stressful and the holiday is much more appreciated.

We have gone camping on Thanksgiving weekend in years past. Prepped the conventional holiday meal the weekend before, converted it into casseroles and other pre-made formats, loaded up and spent 4 days in a place normally jammed but completely deserted on that weekend. Usually, the ranger or manager gives us the keys to the place, his phone number and heads off to be with his family and we watch the place for him while we are there. Pretty neat experience.

Chugwater or Casper isn't set up to handle 100 or even 500 vehicles wanting to fill up the same day. Be interesting to see how many PRE-PAY ONLY pumps crash from the CC volume

Be a good indicator of how many people don't prepare before a road trip, waiting till something happens to worry.

Or it could be a bust, with the cautious staying close to home.

Pipeline welders use them (or used to, think safety regs have pretty much done away with them) for welding outside, keeps sunshine from washing out vision from shining over shoulder into hood.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170821/b6592e1b01b0ecbb22cfaf6c998bea48.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170821/306300922a327f3619f40613d22e40b7.jpg

Well, I thought it was a pretty neat experience. I'm at our place outside Palisade and watched as the light dimmed, as if the area was blanketed in smoke from forest fires. Inside the house which normally is light and bright, became rather dark. I used binoculars reversed to project the image of the eclipse onto paper and photographed it at the beginning and the end.

The peak here was about 11:17 a.m., and from about 11:00 to 11:30, I noticed that flocks of Gambel's Quail, Scrub Jays and doves came up to feed as if it were late in the day. The hummingbirds also came into the feeders in waves that are not normal during mid day. Interesting stuff.

That. Was. Incredible!

For those that weren't in the path of totality (read: 98% 99% etc.) you missed out. When there's a total eclipse for those 1-2min you can take your glasses off and look right at it and it was spectacular. If all I saw was the part right before that through my glasses I'd think "meh" too. The total eclipse was awesome though. One of the coolest things I've ever seen & I'm not even an astronomy nerd. Hell, my wife is the one who convinced me that we should go. Glad I went. Just ate some delicious Mexican food too. Started the morning off with Gering Bakery. Not too shabby.

I had intended to bring a small set of binos to work, in order to see how many autistic engineers I could make screech with rage at my stupidity. Alas, I forgot to grab them on the way out the door this morning.

Oh well. I was even going to tape over the ocular lens and "stare" at the eclipse. It would have been the trolling of the century!

92% Coverage in Denver.
Used the binocular projector on a white cardboard screen method, a pinhole in a box, and had CBS local coverage on the tv.
We found the crossed fingers creating a small hole, and viewing under the leafy branches of a tree all worked too.
The tv coverage showed a lot of excitement, and we got into the spirit of story-telling with the neighbors as they had tried various pinhole methods.
The stores and outlets ran out of glasses here two weeks ago, so we all ended up with the alternate projection devices that were handmade.
We all noticed a cooling period and the birds went quiet.
The bees all were buzzing around the flowers with no change in behavior.
I am simple, so I had fun.

Left at 4 am from HR, got to Alliance, NE around 9:00. Would have been quicker, not for traffic, but a ton of fog north of Sterling.

Drove through Alliance and saw a replica of Stonehenge made of cars and the large parking areas. $50 for parking of a jailbreak escape, not thanks.

South of town the old highway was still there parallel yo the new. Parked on that with plenty of other.

A guy next to me brought a telescope. I assumed he was smart when his daughter made fun of the engineer who could unfold a lawn chair. Dummy sights the scope and looks through it with the eclipse filter glasses. After a few seconds ge start cursing in pain. Says he can't see with the one eye and the scope burnt through the filter. Duh have you ever used a magnifying glass to burn paper? The filter hoes on the entry lens or you get a filter made for the eye piece. I chuckled at simple stupidity. He seemed fine later on.

As it progressed, it got significantly cooler and windy. Clouds started rolling in and it looked like we may miss it. Around 98% the clouds dissipated.

Watched the shadow sweep across the fields then looked up. Awesome. Got dark like after sunset for about 2 minutes. Sun started peaking and it got bright pretty fast.

Bolted the spot and headed to Sidney. 65 mph to Bridgeport then about a mile gridlock through town, then 65 to Sidney. Watched a few stupid impatient mergers a few cars up.

Hit Cabelas around 130 and fondled the forbidden fruit, while cursing the morons in Colorado who banned their purchase.

Left at 300. Back in HR at 600.

Only slowdowns on i76 were 2 local cops with cars pulled over and the us85 interchange reconstruction.

I drove up yesterday and slept in the back of my Jeep in Sidney last night.

I walked Cabelas around the same time probably passed you in the aisles, even told a balding guy in shorts pushing a shopping cart around with a bunch of magazines that it "Looked like a Colorado shopping cart". On the way back down to Sidney I stopped at the gun store in Bridgeport they had a couple of Springfield Garands and a Winchester 1906 that intrigued me.

I filmed it getting dark when the total eclipse hit, but with the camera sensor on my phone has good low light sensitivity so you really do not get a sense of how dark it got. look at how bright it was at beginning of video (already significantly darker than normal) and then fast forward to about 1:40 and watch to end. The Moons shadow is only about 40 miles wide so the horizon still had some light to it.

Regarding the eclipse, I'm just going to drink goats blood, dance around a dung fire and pierce some private part of my body during the 2 minutes. Standard for being in the 90%+ path. Those 100%ers are REALLY hard core. Keep your women, children and livestock hidden.

Same here. "Okay", is being generous. We stood outside and it got......a bit dim. Like a dark cloud passed by. We did the binocular thing and the hole in the cardboard thing and saw the actual crescent. Cool. Didn't see any difference in birds or anything at all. Just got a bit dim is all. We've had thunderstorms that made it darker than that.

What I did think was cool was that at 93%, it was still pretty freaking bright - with just 7% sunlight. Go sun!

Edit: We had FoxNews on beforehand showing other parts of the country and stuff, and man, Shepard Smith is such a douchewad. His over-enthusiasm made me want to puke.

After watching one 20+ years ago in Italy, I got to see this one from the store front of the Silverbullet.
Just as last time, an eerie calm, somebody described it as being in the eye of the hurricane.
Kind of a different energy in the air.
Called my wife on the phone and told her to get on the front porch: she did while we were on the phone and was left speechless...she said she had shivers going down her spine, and felt a wave of energy.
I myself felt exhilarated.
The guy I was working with felt it too, described it as a weird air pressure...
Anybody else felt that?

I hadn't thought to comment on it, as I figured it was just me, but yes I know exactly the calm eerie feeling you are talking about, it was certainly different. I also noticed the birds acting weird, as others have said. Maybe there was more to this eclipse than I was giving it credit for.

Exactly. If I were just at 97% coverage it would have been meh, but as my friend who went with me to the total said, it was the closest he's ever come to a religious experience. Just before (and just after) the total eclipse, the light went almost pure white, then (as you can see in others' pics), during the total the white halo was just friggin' sweet.

The progression was cool. I'd been sitting in the sun and could feel it. By the time it was maybe 15% covered, the light levels seemed the same but you couldn't feel it on your skin nearly as much. By about 50% there was just a bit of a subtle shift in getting dark. As it got further, you could definitely notice it being darker, but still couldn't obviously look at the sun directly. During the eclipse I was surprised at actually how light it still was. I was expecting total nighttime light, but it was more like late evening, maybe 30min till darkness levels of light (I guess from the corona light still making it through).

It was really pretty amazing. I and others from my group are strongly considering going to the 2024 eclipse in the East.

Left Lander area around noon and had zero issues with traffic delays, yes there was more vehicles but everyone was running 70-80mph on US287 to I80. I80 was as normal as it can be, US5287 from Laramie to FC was pretty normal too. Drive time was about the same as it always is.
